Misfit

Chapter 68

Harry's POV

"Lana, stop." I put my hand on her knee to stop it from shaking. She smiles weakly at me and I squeeze her leg to comfort her. We've been sitting in this waiting room for what feels like FOREVER. I look at my watch. We've been here for about eight minutes. After about thirty seconds Lana's leg starts bobbing up and down again. We start school again on Monday and I finally convinced Lana to make an appointment with her doctor. She is clearly nervous. I am too. I don't know any teenager that wouldn't be nervous in this situation.

I'm racking my brain for something to say that will make her feel better, but my mind is completely blank.

"I think I left my curling iron on," she says suddenly. I look over at her and she's biting her nails.

"What?"

"Yeah, I definitely left my curling iron on. We should probably go home." She stands and starts putting her coat back on.

"Lana."

"It could start a fire."

"Lana." I take her hand firmly in mine and pull her back down into her chair. "Your hair is straight." She sighs and looks around nervously. "Babe, I know you're nervous, but we need to stay."

"Why? Why can't we just take another test at home?"

"Lana, if you are pregnant we were going to have to come here anyway. We need to get this over with. This is the best way for us to find out anyway."

"Harry, I don't think I can do this right now," she says, leaning forward and burying her face in her hands. I rub her back.

"You can," I encourage. "Everything is going to be fine."

"How? How is it going to be fine?"

"You think I have this figured out? Lana, I'm just as freaked out as you but if you are pregnant you need to take care of yourself."

"Can we please just go?" she asks, standing again. I sigh and stand to continue arguing, but a nurse comes into the waiting room.

"Langley Forester?"

I put my hands on her arms. "Ready?"

"No," she whispers. I give her a small smile and she turns slowly to follow the nurse. I sit back down and run my fingers along my lip, considering what our options are if Lana is pregnant.

And I have a feeling she is.

"Mr. Styles?"

"Yes?" I stand and the nurse waves me over. Is something wrong already? "What is it?"

"Langley would like to see you," she says, gesturing to her room. I smile and walk quickly over there.

"Hey, is everything okay?" I ask when I find her, taking her face between my hands.

"Why did you stay out there?" she asks.

"I just figured you would want me to."

"No," she says, shaking her head a little. She looks so scared. "I need you here with me," she says, voice barely a whisper.

"Then I'll be here," I say, kissing her softly on the lips. I pull back when someone clear's their throat behind us.

"Dr. Clark," Lana says, pulling my hands down from her face, which has turned slightly pink. I smile and step back as the doctor comes into the room.

"Lana, nice to see you," he says politely.

"This is my boyfriend, Harry." I shake his hand and he nods at me.

"What can I do for you today?"

"Well I need to..." she pauses and looks at me, biting her bottom lip. He looks up from his clipboard and I nod, urging her to continue. It's like saying the words out loud makes all of this more real. But this is as real as it gets; we are in the doctor's office. "I missed my period."

"Okay, there could be a number of reasons for that. Are you taking any medications?"

"No."

"Any major changes in your diet?"

"No."

"Are you sexually active?"

Shouldn't that have been the first question? She blushes and looks at me. "Yes," she says shyly.

"Well, we're going to do some blood work to rule out pregnancy or a thyroid issue."

"Okay," she says.

"Hold on," I interject, stepping forwards to be included in the conversation. "Are you saying there's a chance that she isn't pregnant?"

"It's a possibility, yes. There are a number of reasons for a woman to skip a menstrual period."

"Like what?"

"Stress, a major lifestyle change, hormonal imbalance, medications, excessive exercise or weight change," he says, mostly talking to Lana. She looks really confused. "We need to do the blood test to rule out any physiological causes. After the results of that come back we can discuss it further, but that won't be for a day or two. Any other questions?"

Lana shakes her head and smiles weakly at him.

"Okay, then I will send Linda in to do the blood work and then we'll schedule a follow up appointment to discuss the results. We should have them monday or tuesday."

Shit. I guess that makes sense since it's friday and they probably don't do that stuff on the weekends.

"Thank you, Dr. Clark." He nods his head and goes out of the room. I sit on the bench beside Lana, paper crinkling underneath me.

"What are you thinking?" I ask, rubbing her back.

"I didn't really think there could be another reason," she says. "I shouldn't have told you, I totally might have just worried you for nothing."

"That's a joke, right? I want to be there for you, whether it has something to do with me or not. Something is obviously up either way and I want to be here."

"Sorry," she says, leaning her head on my shoulder.

"You have nothing to apologize for." The nurse comes in and I stand and sit back in the chair against the wall. She winces a little when the needle pokes her skin, but it doesn't seem to bother her that much. When the nurse is done she reiterates that they won't have the results until monday or tuesday. She leaves and says we can set up an appointment with the receptionist for tuesday if we'd like.

After she's gone Lana hops off the bench. "Ready?"

"Yeah. Let's come right after school on tuesday," I suggest, taking her hand and leading her back to the front desk.

"Yeah, okay," she agrees quietly. She sets it up and I get our coats from the rack. I help Lana slide hers on and we go out to my car. We drive back in silence. When we pull into my driveway I stop her from getting out right away.

"What's on your mind?" I ask. She seems so distracted.

"You understand what just happened right?" she asks, smiling and leaning her head back.

"You seem more nervous than before, though. Shouldn't you be relieved?"

"No. Now I know it could be something else and I'm getting my hopes up. Then I start thinking don't get your hopes up, because there is still a chance I could be pregnant. I'm basically going back and forth with myself in my head, trying to decide how I feel but I just can't." She inhales deeply after that speech. I don't think she took a breath the whole time.

"Relax, Lana. Try not to think about it, okay?" I practically laugh out loud at my advice. It's horrible. This would be all either of us thought about until tuesday. Tuesday. So far away.

"Right," she breathes.

"It's our last day of winter break, let's do something fun. Like normal kids," I say, getting out of the car. She does the same and I walk around the front and we head into my house.

"What did you have in mind?"

"We could see a movie or something." I say, shrugging and hanging up my coat before walking into the living room. I lay back onto the couch and look at my watch. Almost 11. That means we could easily go. She walks over and sits directly on my stomach, leaning back against the couch and looking at me.

"I'm exhausted," she complains.

"You look really tired," I agree. "Have you been sleeping okay?"

She closes her eyes and puts her feet up on the coffee table. "Now that I think about it ever since my mom left I've had a lot of restless nights. And recent events haven't exactly put me at ease."

"Makes sense." She doesn't move for a bit and for a minute I think she's fallen asleep when suddenly she bolts up and claps her hands together.

"Okay! Let's go somewhere before I fall asleep!"

"Lana, if you're that tired you can just go up and sleep for a bit," I say, standing and stretching. I'm kind of tired too, to be honest. Last night I was kind of nervous about today, so I didn't sleep very much.

"No," she says, shaking her head. "We're turning into like some kind of old married couple."

"What?"

"We're kind of boring, babe."

"No we aren't!"

"Harry, last friday we stayed here and played Scrabble with your mom and Robin. Even Gemma went out and did something and she doesn't even know anyone here."

Yeah I guess we are kind of lame. "Well, I thought we had fun."

"We did, but we had old people fun, not young, hot people fun." I raise an eyebrow at that comment. She laughs and takes my hand, pulling me to the door.

"I don't know how I feel about you having young, hot people fun. It doesn't sound like a good situation for my girlfriend."

"Just because I'm your girlfriend doesn't mean I can't also be young and hot."

"No, but it does mean that I'm the only one that should get to see you like that," I counter, putting my coat back on. She rolls her eyes and head back out to my car.

"It would be mean to deprive the world of that version of myself." I laugh and we both climb into the car.

"That would be a terrible shame."
