Misfit

Chapter 56

"Mom?" She walks over to me and extends her arms, but I stagger back so she can't touch me. "What the hell are you doing here?"

"Do not speak to me that way, Langley," she says, pointing a finger at me. "I'm your mother."

"No, you aren't. You stopped being my mom when you abandoned me."

"I didn't abandon you. I just-"

"Yes you did! You just took off without a word!" She tries to defend herself again but I cut her off. "What do you want? Why are you here?"

"I came for the party."

I scoff and cross my arms. "Do you really think this is the best place to have a family reunion?"

"I have every right to be here, Lana."

"No, I don't think you do." I walk over to the man holding a clipboard with the guest list on it. "Is Allison Forester on the list?"

"No, ma'am, Mr. Forester specifically asked us to make sure it was not. He said she was not to be let in."

I turn back to my mother. "There. Now go."

She stares at me for a minute and walks up to me, getting a little too close. She's trying to intimidate me. "You can't just cut me out of your life, Langley."

"You did that for me when you fled the country. Now get out." I point the door and she glares at me before slowly turning and walking out of the building. How could she be here? I thought she was supposed to be in California? Why would she show up now?

Harry runs over to me and wraps his arms around me tightly. "Are you okay? Did you know she was here? Of course not, you looked shocked. Can I get you something? Do you want to sit down?"

"Harry, calm down," I say, laughing a little. He pulls back and looks at my face, worry written all over his. "You sound like I just watched someone die or something."

"Are you okay?"

"I don't know." I look down at his chest. "Did that really just happen?" He nods and I sigh. "I should probably go find my dad."

"I'll get him," he says, leading me to a bench outside the banquet hall. "You stay here. I'll be right back." He disappears into the crowd of people and I lean back. My mother is here. In England. For Christmas I guess? Why didn't she tell us she was coming? My dad must have known she was trying something...why else would he tell them not to let her in here?

"Lana?" He walks over to me, Harry following closely. "What's wrong?"

"Have you talked to mom lately?" He sits beside me and shakes his head without making eye contact. "Dad."

"What?"

"She was just here."

He looks at me, then to Harry, then at the floor. "Damn it."

"That man said you told him not to let her in. Did you know she was coming here?"

He sighs and looks at me finally. "I did talk to her. A few days ago. She kept calling my cell, so I finally picked up to tell her just to talk to my lawyers and to stop calling me. She informed me that she wanted to spend Christmas with her family, and that she was trying to book a flight here. Since it was so last minute I just figured she wouldn't get one."

"Why is this the first I'm hearing about this? A little warning would have been nice, dad."

"I'm sorry I didn't tell you, I just didn't think she would actually get here. I haven't seen you much this week so I didn't get a chance to talk to you about it."

I can feel Harry watching me. I don't know what to say or how to feel right now. This was just so unexpected.

"I think I want to go home."

"Mom will probably be there. Anyway, I can't leave, not yet."

"I can call us a cab," Harry offers. "Or I can ask my mum to come get us."

"No, he's right, my mom is probably waiting for us at the house."

I lean forward and put my face in my hands. I am so not prepared to deal with this right now. I hear my Dad sigh next to me.

"Okay, if you really want to go you can. If it's alright with Harry and his parents, you can stay there tonight to avoid mom." I look at him, at Harry, then back at him. Harry seems as surprised as I do.

"Really?"

"I'm going back inside before I change my mind," my dad says, standing up. I stand as well and hug him. "We'll straighten this out, I promise."

"I know." I pull back and he goes back inside, but not before giving Harry a look of warning and shaking his hand.

"Well then. I'll call my mum."

"No, don't make her come all the way here. We can just get a taxi."

"Babe, you are not getting in a taxi in that incredible dress. I'm calling my mum." I don't argue again as he takes out his phone. "Gem? Why are you answering mum's phone? She is? Wait, what time is it?" He laughs into the phone. "Yea, apparently she is. I need a favour. No I don't! What do I still owe you from? Oh, right. Okay, well this favour is mostly for Lana so she can owe you now too." I roll my eyes and he winks at me. "Can you pick us up? Vicarage Hotel. No. There's this great thing on your phone called a GPS, you should use it. I'm not sassy, you're sassy. Okay. Okay! Yea. Bye."

I laugh as he hangs up and he smiles at me. "What?"

"Nothing. You two are just kind of amusing."

"Me and Gemma?" I nod and he laughs. "I bet we are. She's crazy."

"So are you."

"So mean." He wraps an arm around me and pulls me against him. We wait by the door and Gemma arrives twenty minutes later, driving Harry's Range Rover. "How dare she." He pulls me out to the car and opens the passenger side door, helping me into the vehicle.

"Hey, Lana. Everything okay?"

"Not really, but I'm alright." She smiles at me and I try to return one. Harry opens the driver's side door suddenly, making Gemma jump.

"What are you doing?"

"Who said you could drive my car?"

"Oh, you bought this car?"

"Gemma."

"Harry." He stands there and stares at her for a minute before sighing and shutting the door. He climbs into the seat behind her. I laugh when he folds his arms and pouts. Gemma shakes her head and starts driving home. They tease each other the whole time and I just sit there and laugh. When we pull into the driveway I look across the road to see a rental car parked at my house. Yep, my mom is definitely there.

"Let's go," Harry says after opening my door for me. He holds his hand out and I take it and climb out, being careful in my dress. "Do you want me to go over there and get anything for you?"

"No, you don't have to do that. It's fine."

"Lana, I don't mind, really."

I sigh and look across the street. "I would appreciate having a toothbrush. And some underwear." He raises an eyebrow at me. "What? The dress didn't allow me to wear any. Don't judge me."

"I'm not judging. Just enjoying the visual." He laughs and I smack his arm. "I'll get your toothbrush and some clothes. Anything else?"

"Nope."

"Okay, then. I'll be back in two minutes." He kisses my cheek and runs across the street. I turn and go into his house. Anne is in the kitchen making tea.

"Is everything okay, love?" She asks, coming to hug me.

"I'm not really sure."

"Harry texted me on your way back. You are, of course, welcome to stay here."

"Thank you." She nods and rubs my arm.

"Do you want some tea?"

"That would be great, yes." She pours some into a mug for me and I sit at the island. "Can I ask you something?"

"Ask away, darling."

"Would you ever leave your children?" She turns quickly and stares at me. "Not that I think you would! I'm just trying really hard to understand what my mother did so I can forgive her but I just...I don't get it."

"Oh, sweetheart," Anne says, setting the mug down in front of me and sitting beside me. "Your mother loves you. She doesn't have a choice in the matter. She's your mum. That doesn't mean she's perfect. I'm not excusing what she did in the slightest, but everyone makes mistakes."

"Wouldn't it be just really...pathetic if I let her back into my life?"

"She's your mother, Lana, it makes perfect sense for you to want her in your life. No one would blame you for that."

"I don't know what to do." I stare at my tea.

"Do you want my advice?" I nod and she continues. "What she did was horrible and it's obvious that it hurt you very much. I do believe in forgiveness. If you can do that, then that makes you a really good person. But, I love you like my own daughter, Lana, and I don't want to see you hurt again. Make sure she's really sorry and understands that what she did was wrong. Make sure she's changed before you let her back in."

I nod slowly. "Do you think that's possible? That she could change?"

"You would know the answer to that better than me."

Harry's POV

I turn the doorknob on Lana's front door slowly. It's open. I push the door open and look around; her mother is sitting on the couch, flipping through TV channels. I walk in and shut the door loudly so she knows I'm here.

"Took you long enough, Stanley." She turns off the TV and gets up to turn around. She's surprised to see me. "Oh, Harry. What are you doing here?"

"I'm just going to get a few things from Lana's room." I start walking to the stairs and she follows me.

"You can't just barge in here, young man. This isn't your house, you don't live here." I turn and glare at her.

"Neither do you."

She laughs darkly. "Who do you think you are?" She takes a step closer to me. "Listen carefully, Harry. I will get Lana to forgive me, and when I do I will make sure she knows that you are nowhere near good enough for her. You'll be out of her life so fast it will make your head spin."

"Fine." I turn and go upstairs to Lana's room so I can get her things. I quickly stuff some clothes and her toothbrush in a bag and go back downstairs. Her mother is still standing where I left her, obvioulsy waiting for me to leave. The nerve of this woman. I walk to the door, but turn to look at her before I open it.

"Now you listen. I don't care what you think of me. You abandoned your daughter and I was here for her. Not you. I saw how broken she was when you left and let me tell you something. You are the one that doesn't deserve to be in her life. And trust me when I say that I will not let you hurt her again. Not ever. So threaten me all you want. I'm not going anywhere." I glare at her and walk out the door before she can say anything. Who the hell raised that woman? Seriously, what is her problem. She has issues.

I walk into my house and hear my mum and Lana talking in the kitchen. I overhear my mum as I walk in.

"You would know the answer to that better than me."

"Answer to what?" I ask, setting the bag down and standing beside Lana. She stares intently into the mug in her hands. I look at my mum and she smiles sympathetically and rubs Lana's back. After a few minutes she looks up at me.

"Was she there?"

"Mhmm."

"Did she say anything to you?"

I shake my head slowly. "No, she was asleep on the couch," I lie.

"Good to know she's making herself right at home."

I nod and feel my mum staring at me. I look at her and she raises her eyebrows. Yep, she knows I lied. "Come on, you must want to get out of that dress."

"Kind of," Lana admits, then she looks at my mum. "Are you sure it's okay if I stay here? If my mum is asleep I can just sneak back into my house."

I shake my head quickly at my mum. "No, you can stay here, Lana. You don't have to deal with that right now." I mouth a thank you to her and pick up the bag at my feet. Lana stands and hugs my mother.

"Thank you, Anne." I take her hand and pull her to the stairs. "Hold on." She releases my hand and bends over to remove her shoes so she can carry them. She puts her hand in mine again and we go up to my room. I throw the bag on my bed and shut the door. She walks over to the bed and opens the bag, pulling out the stuff I took for her. I sit beside the bag and she looks at me and smiles a little. "What is this?"

"What do you mean?"

She laughs and dumps the bag out. "Harry, there's no pyjamas in here and none of these clothes match."

"At least I got your toothbrush," I say, holding it up. She laughs again.

"Yea, at least there's that. What am I supposed to sleep in?" I stand and go to my dresser to pull out some of my clothes for her; boxers and a t-shirt as usual.

"What else?" I hand them to her and she looks at them.

"I think you like it better than I do when I sleep in your clothes."

"You're probably right."

I lean down and kiss her forehead before she turns. "Can you unzip me?"

"Are you trying to kill me?" She laughs and turns to the side a little so I can undo the zipper that goes down the side of her dress. It goes down part of her thigh. "You weren't kidding when you said you aren't wearing underwear."

"No, I was not." She holds the dress in place while she turns and gets her underwear and my clothes off the bed. "Be right back." She goes into the bathroom and locks the door. Damn it. Having a girlfriend as hot as Lana really isn't easy. I'm not complaining of course, but it makes my life difficult sometimes. I change out of my suit and put on some track pants as she comes back out of the bathroom with the dress in her hand. "Can I hang this up?"

"Of course." I take out a hanger for her and she hangs the dress up and puts it in the closet. "Is it weird of me to think you look just as good like this as you do in that dress?"

"Yes." She turns and walks to the bed and I laugh and wrap my arms around her from behind. "I need to brush my teeth, Harry."

"You do that a lot."

She laughs and spins in my arms to face me. "I like being hygenic. Is that a problem?"

"Why do you always want to do that when I want to kiss you?"

"You always want to kiss me."

"Someone's confident."

She laughs again and pulls away from me and I follow her into the bathroom. We both brush out teeth; I can't help but picture us doing this is five, ten, twenty years. I can see it. When we're done I watch while she pulls her hair back into a ponytail.

"I should probably wash my face."

"Why?"

"Because I have like eight pounds of makeup on and that is bad for my skin."

"Okay. Do you want me to ask Gemma?"

"Is she asleep?"

"I'll find out."

"Don't wake her up, Harry!" She calls after me while I walk out and go down the hall do Gemma's bedroom.

I knock twice and walk in. "Gem?"

"If you're just going to walk right in then why do you bother knocking?" She asks, not looking up her her computer that is on the bed in front of her.

"To announce my presence."

"What do you want."

"So rude." She looks up at me and rolls her eyes. "Lana needs face wash."

"Oh, okay. Its in the bathroom on the vanity." I walk into her bathroom and reach for a bottle, but stop short when I see like twelve different bottles on the counter.

"What is all of this?"

"Shut up Harry, I'm a girl. It's the blue bottle."

"There's three blue ones."

"Read the label, dummy."

I pick up two of them and read them. Is this english? I just pick one and bring it out. "Thanks."

"That's not the right one." I look at it and she laughs and walks to the bathroom. "Here, this is make up remover. That's what she needs, right?"

"I have no clue."

"If she needs anything else just come back for it." She hops back on her bed and I walk out. When I'm just out of her room she calls my name. I walk back and stand in the doorway. "Is she okay?"

"Her mum is mental."

"Was she at the house?"

"Yea." She bobs her head forward, waiting for me to tell her what happened. I sigh and look down the hall at my room, then walk in and sit on the edge of Gemma's bed. "She said she's planning on sticking around and that she would basically do whatever it took to make sure I don't see Lana anymore."

"What? That's insane! What did Lana say when you told her?" I keep quiet and she narrows her eyes at me. "You did tell her, right?"

"Not exactly. Ow!" She hits my arm. "Why do you always hit me?"

"Because someone needs to beat some sense into you!"

"What?"

"You need to tell her what her mother said to you."

"No. It's just going to upset her more."

"What happens when she tries to get her to break up with you?"

"That's not going to happen."

"How do you know that?"

"Because I won't let it! And neither will she."

"Okay." She sighs and rubs the side of her head with her fingers. "I love you Harry, but you're an idiot sometimes. Lana is a big girl, you don't need to protect her from this. Besides, it's her problem and she deserves to have all the facts. If she knew this kind of stuff I am sure it would effect whatever she decides to do."

"Maybe. But I'm not telling her right now. I don't want to make her feel worse."

"Fair enough." I get up and walk out the door. "Goodnight Harry."

"Goodnight."

I walk back into the room and close the door, then turn to see Lana asleep on my bed. I smile and walk around the bed; she's on the side I always sleep on. Should I wake her?

"Lana," I whisper. Her eyes flutter open slowly. "Do you still want to wash your face?"

She nods and rubs one of her eyes as she sits up. "Do you sleep on this side when I'm not here, too?"

"Usually. Why?"

"It smells like you more than that side," she says, pointing to the other side of the bed. I laugh and give her the bottle. "Thanks." She goes into the bathroom and starts washing her face. I turn back to the bed and pick up a pillow from each side and smell them.

"Lana, there's no difference."

"What?" I smell them both a few more times to compare and she comes out of the bathroom while I'm doing this. She laughs. "Well obviously you can't smell yourself, you weirdo." She takes one of the pillows and puts it to her nose, then does the same with the other one. "Yea, this one is definitely from over there." She puts it in the spot I sleep in and hugs the other one to her chest. "I'm stealing this one."

"You can't do that, it's my favourite pillow."

"Too bad."

"You're lucky I love you."

She stands and jumps across the bed, rolling over to her side. "I know."

"Do you want to go to sleep?"

"It's like ten o'clock."

"May I remind you that you were asleep five minutes ago when I came in here."

"It was a power nap. I'm wide awake now."

I laugh and lay on my side beside her, propping my head up. "You were probably asleep for like two minutes."

"And clearly that was all the time I needed." She sits up, reaches beside the bed, and picks up one of my guitars.

"What are you doing?"

"I could really rock the whole guitar look." I laugh while she runs her fingers along the strings. "I would look great playing one of these on the street."

"For deaf people maybe."

"Mean!" She hands the guitar to me. "Teach me something."

I smile and put it down beside me. "Come here," I say, patting the bed between my legs. She sits between them with her back to me and I put the guitar in front of her, leaning over her shoulders so I can see what I'm doing. I position her left hand on the neck and put her fingers on the strings and put my hand over hers to hold the right ones down for g chord. I move my head to the other side of hers and kiss her cheek.

"Okay, this is G. Strum with the tip of your thumb." She follows my instructions and I smile as I watch her face. I continue moving her fingers around and show her a bunch of chords.

After a while she leans back against me and rubs the tip her her fingers along her thumb. "My thumb hurts."

"That's what a pick is for."

"Why are you always such a smart ass?" I laugh and breathe in the smell of her hair. Smells like flowers. "Play something for me." She says quietly, taking her other hand out from under mine and resting them on my thighs.

"Okay, but you're going to have to stop touching me like that."

"Like what?" She looks down at her hands and laughs. "Such a teenage boy."

I laugh and kis he back of her head, then lean beside her and start playing the music for the song Last First Kiss. When I'm done she leans to the side so she can look at my face. "I've never heard that song before. What is it?" I shrug as I put the guitar on the bed beside me and lean back against the pillows. She turns and lays on top of me. "Harry."

"Yes?"

"Did you write that?"

"Maybe."

"Babe! It's really good!" I smile and she kisses the tip of my nose. "Are there words to go with it?"

"No."

"Liar." I laugh softly and she sits up and crosses her legs, still between mine and facing me. "Can I hear them?" I shake my head slowly and she crosses her hands in front of her chest. "Please?"

"Don't do the eyes. No, that's not fair!" She continues looking at me with that adorable puppy face and I roll my eyes. "Alright. fine." She claps and I pick the guitar up again. "I just wrote the second verse, so I don't know if it's any good." I start strumming, but stop quickly. "If I'm going to do this, you have to promise me something."

"Anything."

"Don't say anything when I'm done."

"What?"

"This is the first time I've willingly played for someone. When I'm done just...start talking about something else."

She raises an eyebrow and sighs. "Fine." I take a deep breath and start playing. My heart feels like it's going to beat right out of my chest.

Baby I, I wanna know
What you think when you're alone
Is it me, yeah
Are you thinking of me yeah. Oh
We've been friends now for a while.
Wanna know if when you smile
Is it me, yeah.
Are you thinking of me, yea. Oh, oh.

Girl what would you do
Would you wanna stay
If I were to say

I wanna be last, yea
Baby let me be your, let me be your last first kiss
I wanna be first, yea,
Wanna be the first to take it all a way like this
And if you
only knew
I wanna be last, yea
Baby let me be your last
Your last first kiss

Baby tell me would it change
I'm afraid you'll run away
If I tell you
What I've wanted to tell you

Yeah

Maybe I just gotta wait
Maybe this is a mistake
Im a fool, yeah.

Baby I'm just a fool, yea
Oh, oh.

Girl what would you do?
Would you wanna stay
If I were to say

I wanna be last, yea,
baby let me be your
let me be your last first kiss

I wanna be first, yea
Wanna be the first to take it all away like this
And if you
Only knew
I wanna be last, yea
Baby let me be your last
Your last first kiss

Oh, oh oh.

I wanna be last, yea,
baby let me be your last
Your last first kiss

I finish the song and stare at my hand on the guitar for a minute before setting it on the ground beside me and leaning it against the bedside table. Did I really just do that...

As promised, Lana doesn't make any comments. I look at her and she's smiling at me. I lean back against the pillows again and she crawls on top of me. I rest my hands on her lower back and she stares into my eyes for a moment before kissing me on the lips. She pulls away after a few minutes and lays her head down on my chest.

"So, how about that weather?"

I laugh and kiss the top of her head. 'Subtle, Lana."

"Just doing what you asked me to."

"Mhmm." We lay like that for a few minutes before she rolls off of me and lays on the bed beside me.

"Okay, I'm ready to sleep now." She turns onto her stomach and looks at me while she smells the pillow underneath her. "I might steal this permanently. So I can smell you all the time."

I lift up the covers to crawl under them and pull them over her as well. "Why would you do that when you can just smell me."

"Oh I will." I laugh and pull her against me. She sticks her nose against my neck and breathes in dramatically.

"You're weird," i say, chuckling against her hair. She wraps her arms around me.

"I'm okay with that."

"Me too." Her breathing slows and I look down to see that she's already asleep. I kiss her forehead lightly. "I love you."
