Misfit

Chapter 4

The next morning I pulled into my usual parking spot, next to Brooke. It sounds ridiculous, but the popular kids always claim their spots and no one else ever dares to park there. It's insane, but convenient if I'm honest. I shut my door and walk around to the back of Brooke's car where El, Louis, Josh, and Kyle, another one of my friends are standing. Brooke's trunk to her Jeep Compass was propped open for her and El to sit on. Louis was leaning up against the car beside El, clearly flirting with her. I sat beside Brooke and said hi to everyone. I noticed Josh staring at me. I had taken extra care to pick out my outfit this morning http://www.polyvore.com/new_slang/set?id=100394401&lid=3013515 though I wasn't sure why.

"Hey, Lan, you look hot! What happened to you last night? I called you like five times!" Brooke said, never failing to be dramatic.

"I had a thing." I said, shrugging I didn't want to get into it all in front of the guys. Brooke, oblivious to me trying to avoid the conversation, pressed on.

"What did you do? What could have happened that you didn't have your phone on you. Your phone is basically glued to your hand or in your pocket so I'm thinking, explain."

I rolled my eyes and said nothing. This only made her mad.

"What the hell, Lana? Why won't you tell me what you did last night?"

"Brooke, can you just drop it? I don't want to talk about it okay? Can you not see that?" I half yelled at her, throwing my bag over my shoulder and storming off. Okay, she probably didn't deserve that. But still, she could be so clueless!

"Lan, wait up!" Josh said, jogging to catch up with me. "Are you okay?"

I didn't look at him or stop walking. "Like you actually care, Josh."

He pulled my shoulder and stopped me from walking. "Lana, you broke up with me. Remember? If anything, you are the one who doesn't care. I never stopped caring. Now, come on, what's wrong?"

I suddenly felt guilty for snapping at him because I was annoyed with Brooke. "I'm sorry. That wasn't fair. Brooke just gets under my skin sometimes, that's all. It's no big-" I stopped short when I saw a brand new black range rover pull in and park right next to my car. Josh turned when I stopped talking.

"Woah, who is that?" He said, gaping at the car. It was gorgeous.

I watched as Harry stepped out of the vehicle and made his way towards the building. My stomach went into knots as he got closer. I looked at Josh, who groaned quietly and rolled his eyes. "Not his kid," he muttered.

Harry saw me then. He smiled as he walked by, not stopping or saying anything. I found myself staring after him. Josh cleared his throat. I gave him a smile before turning and walking into the building. I headed to my English literature class, walking in and taking my typical seat towards the back. The class filled up pretty quickly. El and Brooke walked in. Brooke quickly locked arms with her. They sat in the two seats in front of me. Brooke turned to glare at me. El quickly looked back apologetically. I rolled my eyes. Glad to see we were being mature.

Harry walked in as the late bell rang. He looked around and spotted me at the back. He then proceeded to take the seat right next to me, smirking as he sat down.

"Something funny?" I ask, rudely, annoyed with Brooke.

"Not at all," he said, still smirking at me.

"Then wipe that stupid smirk off your face." I said, slouching into my seat as the teacher began to talk.

"Woah, who peed in your cheerios this morning, love?" My heart fluttered a little when he called me that. It was cute.

Brooke turned around then. "Would you mind shutting your trap? Some of us are trying to pay attention," she snapped, not looking at Harry.

I looked at him with a look that said "that's who." He chuckled softly looking at Brooke. Then my mind flashed back to last night. Did he almost kiss me? Is that what happened? Suddenly I got really nervous that he was sitting next to me. I reached up and touched my cheek where he had kissed it, trying to make sense of the situation in my head.

He looked at me as I touched my cheek. I quickly put my hand down and started taking notes. He stared at me. It took everything in me not to look back at him. He finally looked away, and I sighed. What was this boy doing to me?

When the bell rang to signal the end of class, I got up slowly and went to walk out, not looking at Harry. I headed for my locker and Eleanor ran up behind me.

"I am so sorry, Lana. Brooke is being so ridiculous! I didn't want to start something in the middle of class, that's why I sat with her," she rambled, trying to apologize.

"El, it's totally fine. I'm not mad at you, I'm mad at Brooke. She always pushes me. It's so annoying," I say, shutting my locker a little to roughly.

"Yea I could tell you wanted her to drop it this morning. What did you do last night?" She asked, knowing she could since the boys weren't around.

"You know that new kid? Harry? Well he moved into that house across the street from me and my mom invited his family over for dinner last night. It was...interesting," I said, not sure how to describe it.

El's eyes widened. "Oh my gosh! How was it? Did you guys talk? He's so cute! You are so lucky!"

I laughed. "Well, I collided into him again. And he caught me again. It was embarrassing. Then he stared at me really strangely during dinner. And afterward I think he tried to kiss me. But then his mom said he had to go so he kissed me on the cheek and left."

"He did! Oh my that's so adorable! You should invite him to the party tonight, he could meet people and you guys could hang out. This is so exciting I can't wait-"

"Hi Harry!" I half yelled, cutting El off effectively before he could hear what she was saying. He was walking towards us.

"Ladies," he said with a nod.

"Harry, right? I'm Eleanor, Lana's friend. We are going to a party tonight how would you like to come?" Eleanor blurted out. I looked at her, eyes wide.

Harry smiled when he saw my expression. "Are you going?" he asked me.

"I...erm...I'm not sure yet." I said. I couldn't believe El just invited him without asking me. I didn't want to make him feel like I didn't want him there, so I continued. "I probably will. It's actually right down the street from us, so I can come and get you on my way if you want? I'll probably just walk."

Harry smiled. "Great. Text me when you're coming. See you in biology." He waved and walked off.

I turned and looked at El, placing my hands on my hips. She looked at me innocently. The bell rang and I just turned and headed to the library, knowing she would follow. We both had a spare period. Perks of being a senior. What was unfortunate was that Brooke and Josh both had one too. They weren't there yet so El and I sat down and took out our books. I had way too much homework.

Harry's POV

A party with Lana. That would be fun. Maybe I would get a chance to hang out with her. I just want to spend time with her. I can tell I make her nervous. And that she's not used to it. Man, did I ever want to kiss her last night. As I walk away from Lana and Eleanor, I turned around to get another look at her. When I turned back around, I almost collide with the kid from the caf. What was his name again?

"Hey, Harvey. Looks like we need to have another little chat."

"It's Harry," I said, annoyed. Who does this guy think he is?

"Whatever. Look, let's get something straight, yeah? That girl you were just talking to is mine. Always has been, always will be. So don't get any ideas."

I just stared at him as calmly as I could, not saying anything. What's his name? Jake?

He started to smile. "You know what, mate? Just to show you how nice I can be, why don't you come to a party at my place tonight? There will be lots of girls there. You can try your luck with one of them." He slapped me on the arm a little harder than necessary. So it's his party the girls invited me to? This could be fun.

"Sounds great. Mate." I said, not moving. The guy then stepped around me, his two friends falling into step behind him. One of them bumped my shoulder as he walked by. Great. Second day and I already want to hit someone.

Lana's POV

After a free period and a class without seeing Brooke, I decided I would suck it up and apologize at lunch. I knew she wouldn't, anyway. I made my way over and sat down beside her. She pretended not to notice me.

"Brooke. Can we stop acting like this now? I'm sorry, okay. I didn't mean to snap at you this morning. I just didn't want to talk about it in front of the boys. I'm sorry," I said, without her looking at me.

After a minute she turned and threw her arms around my neck. I was surpised by this.

"I'm sorry too! I got so bitchy and I don't know why. I'm glad we can hang out at the party now. I'm excited! What are you wearing? You could probably go like that, everyone's been gawking at you all day," she said, winking.

This was the nice thing about Brooke. She moved on quickly. "I'm not sure yet. I don't want to wear a long skirt, though, so I'll probably change." El sat down next to Brooke as I was talking. "Do you guys want to all get ready at my place?" We made our plans and decided to walk together from my house. I looked around and saw Harry looking for somewhere to sit. He looked so hot in skinny jeans. I usually didn't like that look on guys, but he definitely pulled it off.

"Harry!" El suddenly yelled, waving him over. "Come sit with us!" He found where her voice was coming from and looked at me. He smiled and made his way over and sat down beside me. I smiled at him and started to eat.

"Hello, ladies. Eleanor, right?" He asked, looking at El. She nodded. "And this is Brooke," She said, pointing to Brooke.

"Hi, Brooke. Nice to meet you. Langley, you didn't tell me you had such nice friends yesterday," he said, smirking at me. I saw Brooke look at me out of the corner of my eye, but I didn't acknowledge her.

"It never came up," I said. "And for the last time. It's Lana."

He chuckled, but didn't respond to that remark. "How do you eat this stuff?" He asked, referring to the pile of something on his plate. "It looks like...I don't even know what it looks like. And I really don't want to know what it tastes like," he said pushing his tray away from himself and scrunching his nose. I giggled at him. He looked like a 5 year old when he did that.

"Do I amuse you, Lana?" he asked playfully.

I only giggled more. Suddenly I felt his hand squeeze my thigh right where it tickles and I screamed and started to laugh harder. "Harry, don't!" I said, between between breaths. He just laughed himself and took a bite of my sandwich. "Hey!"

"What?" he said, his mouth full of food. He calmly put my sandwich back down and looked at me innocently, still chewing.

"And who said you could touch my food, Styles?" I raised an eyebrow at him.

"I couldn't resist. It looked yummy," he said, leaning closer to me. "Kind of like you," he whispered in my ear so no one else could hear. I felt my face go slightly red. He smirked and stood up, taking his tray with him. I watched him walk past Josh, who was walking toward me. I quickly turned around and kept eating. Harry had confidence, that was for sure. I turned back to look at him before he left. He turned as well, winking at me. As I turned back around, Josh sat down next to me.

"What the hell was that?" he asked, clearly annoyed.

"What was what?" I said, not looking at him.

"You know what, Lan. Don't tell me you like that guy. He's not worth your time."

I looked at him, suddenly annoyed. "You don't even know him. And who are you to say who's worth my time?"

He rolled his eyes and switched conversations. "Are you coming tonight?"

I nodded, not looking at him. At some point El and Brooke had left the table. Nice.

"Good. Hopefully we can spend some time together," he said, placing a hand on my leg.

I rolled my eyes and got up, walking out of the cafeteria. Why couldn't he accept that we were done? How many times would I have to say it?

I headed to biology and got there just as the late bell was ringing, earning me an evil glare from Mr. Davis. Everyone had already started working on their labs again, and I walked to where Harry was sitting. He was ready to start. I sat down and took out my textbook so we could follow the instructions.

"Wow, he really doesn't like you, does he?" Harry asked, referring to our teacher.

I laughed lightly. "Nope," I said, popping the 'p'.

We continued to work on our lab, not really talking about anything else. Harry seemed extremely focussed on what he was doing. It was quite adorable. He was staring quite intently at the flask, trying to measure exactly whatever he was pouring out of the beaker. I started to giggle, making him loose focus and pour too much into the flask.

"Look what you made me do, Langley!" He said, trying not to smile. "Why are you laughing at me, you big meanie?"

"You look so cute staring at that thing. Its not like the room will explode if you don't measure it right," I said, still laughing.

He smirked, turning to face me. "Did you just call me cute?"

I stopped laughing, realizing what I did. "Umm..." I couldn't think of a cover up. "Yea," I admitted, looking away. He just chuckled and went back to what he was doing. We finished before everyone else and Mr. Davis said we could leave early. We walked out of the room, talking about the lab as I walked toward my locker. He leaned back against the ones beside as I entered my combination.

"So, what's the deal with you and that Jake guy?" He asked suddenly. Jake? Who was...

"Oh, you mean Josh?" I asked, after I figured out what he meant. He shrugged, so I continued. "Well, we dated on and off for a couple years, but we broke up again about six weeks ago. And now we are officially over. Why? Did he say something to you?"

"I guess you could say that." I was about to ask him what he meant when he started walking away. "So, I'll see you tonight? Text me when you're coming." He said and walked out of the building. I guess he was skipping the rest of the afternoon. I got a little bit sad when I realized that meant he wouldn't be in stats.
