Misfit

Chapter 39

Harry and I sit at a table with my Dad and a couple other high-ranking members of the company. As promised, the conversation is dull and I don't follow it. I'm glad Harry is here with me. When dinner finally ends people move from their tables to socialize. I turn to my dad.

"Can we get going, Dad?"

"Not yet, Langley. I need to talk to a few more people before I can leave."

"Okay, well Harry drove here, so can we leave?"

"No, sweetheart, not yet," I'm about to argue when he continues. "I know you're bored and you hate these things, but I really appreciate you being here. I don't want it to look like I dragged you here. Just stay for another hour. Then you can go."

He gets up from his chair and makes his way to a group of men. I sigh and slump into my chair. Harry puts his hand on my thigh. I look at him and attempt to smile.

"I'm sorry. You're probably dying to get out of here."

He shakes his head. "I'm fine." He stands and holds his hand out for me. "Let's get a drink." I take it and stand up, following him to the bar. He orders for us and turns to me, leaning his arm on the bar. "You could at least try to have fun."

"I could," I say, shrugging. He laughs and thanks the bartender as he sets down our drink. I take a sip of mine and lean back against the bar, looking out at the room. There are some other kids here. I recognize them from school. They all hang out together; the rich snobs. I don't like any of them. A couple of the boys have tried hitting on me at these events. They all get wasted when they come. They get extremely obnoxious.

One of them looks over and winks at me. I roll my eyes and look away. Harry stands up and takes a step closer to me.

"Would you like to dance?"

I nod and take his hand. The music is slow; he takes my left hand in his right and places his other hand on my lower back. I rest my free hand on his chest, leaning in close while we sway back and forth.

"Who is that guy?" I pull back and look at Harry's face. He looks into my eyes. He's not smiling, not showing any expression.

"What are you talking about?" I ask, confused as to why he seems so rattled.

"The one that winked at you. Who is he?"

I realize he's talking about Aaron. I sigh. "He's no one."

"Yeah? What's his name?" He asks. We keep dancing, but he starts turning us. Probably so he can glare at Aaron.

"His name is Aaron. His dad is on the board." I watch is face for a reaction. He doesn't meet my eyes, just keeps staring behind me.

"And?"

"And what?"

"Lana."

I sigh and separate myself from him slightly. "What?" He finally looks down, meeting my gaze. I roll my eyes. "Nothing happened between us, if that's what you're getting at."

"Does he know that?" he asks, looking behind me again.

"Seriously? Harry, those kids get wasted every time they come to these things. He's flirted with me. All of them have, but he does the most. There, happy?"

He chuckles darkly and shakes his head. "Thrilled." I take my hand out of his and step back from him.

"What is your problem?"

"I don't have one," he states simply. I roll my eyes, folding my arms in front of my chest. He turns and walks back to our table, sitting down and taking a drink. Seriously, what is his deal? Is he jealous? He has never acted like this before. I stand and stare at him for a moment before realizing I'm awkwardly standing alone in the middle of the dance floor. I put my head down and walk towards the bar. As I'm waiting I notice someone come up beside me.

"Harry, why don't you-" I turn to see that it isn't Harry leaning against the bar beside me. It's Aaron.

He smiles crookedly at me. "Hey Lana." Of course he's drunk.

"Leave me alone, Aaron," I say flatly, looking away from him.

"I noticed you brought that guy again. Aren't you bored with him yet?" I ignore him, praying that the bartender will take my order soon. "Come on, Lana."

"What do you want?" I say, turning to look at him. He smiles and takes a small step forward. "Aaron, stop. That boy that I came with, he happens to be my boyfriend. And he already doesn't like you, so I'd back off if I were you."

"He doesn't scare me. Come on, one dance."

"No."

"Please?"

"I said no."

"I'm not going to molest you Lana, it's just a dance." He holds out his hand. I look over at Harry, who's watching me. He raises an eyebrow and looks away. My mouth opens a little, surprised at his lack of reaction. What the hell is his issue? I did not do anything.

"Fine." I put my hand in his and pull him onto the dance floor. He positions himself the same way as Harry, but I make sure there's a gap between our bodies. "Just one," I say, raising my eyebrows at him. My back is to Harry, but I can feel his eyes on me. This is probably not one of my best ideas.

"So, who is he?"

"Why do you care?"

He laughs lightly. "I kind of thought maybe you and I would start something after the way you attacked me at the charity event." I feel my face go red. I remember the event he's talking about. It was right before Harry moved to town. Like the weekend before. I had just found something out about Josh and I was pissed, so I got really drunk and locked myself in a bathroom with Aaron.

"That was a one time thing. I barely even remember it."

He laughs and pulls me a little closer. "Sure you don't. I know you remember the second time, though. After school two weeks later."

"Stop, Aaron. I have a boyfriend."

"He can't hear me." I look up at him sternly. "Okay, okay I'll stop. What's he like?"

"I am not talking about my relationship with you."

"Fine, what do you want to talk about? I'm open to anything."

I sigh and look away from his face. Why did I agree to this? "Can we just dance?"

"It would be much more fun if-"

"I think you'd better take a step back, mate." I pull away from Aaron and turn to see Harry glaring at him, hands balled into tight fists. He looks...pissed.

"Harry, it's fine. Let's just go sit down, okay?" I say, putting my hands on his chest, attempting to push him back. He doesn't budge.

"Yea, Harry. You should go sit down. The song isn't over." I turn my head and glare at Aaron, who has a small smile on his face.

"Yes, it is. So is whatever you think you have with my girlfriend."

"Harry, come on," I say, trying to get him to come with me. "We're making a scene."

I can feel a few people watching us, but I'm sure more will start to notice. I stare at Harry, pleading with my eyes. He continues glaring at Aaron, his eyes dark.

"Relax, mate. We were just dancing, nothing more. Haven't done more for quite a while, now."

He cocks his head to the side, tensing up even more if that's possible. I shut my eyes, praying that I heard that wrong, that Aaron didn't just suggest that we had hooked up.

"What is he talking about, Lana?" he asks quietly, not looking at me.

"Nothing, Harry. Please just come-"

"She didn't tell you? Probably means she never got over it." I turn as my mouth drops open.

"Fuck off, Aaron," I spit. He chuckles and looks down at me. I glare and turn back to Harry, putting my hand in his. I start walking away, pulling him with me.

"See you around Harry," Aaron calls after us. I hold Harry's hand tighter, pulling him toward the exit. "Lana, try not to think about me when you're screwing this tool." Harry yanks his hand out of mine and I spin around to see him walk up to Aaron and punch him in the face. Hard. Aaron staggers back, looking shocked. My hand flies to my mouth and I look around, seeing everyone staring. I run up to Harry as Aaron sends his fist in Harry's direction. Harry blocks it and Aaron dives into him, sending both of them flying onto the ground. They roll around on the floor and I see Aaron manage to hit Harry. Harry ends up sitting on Aaron, connecting his fist with his face again. I stand next to them, screaming at Harry to stop when my Dad runs up behind me and pulls Harry up. Aaron's father comes and helps him off the ground.

"I think you'd better go, Lana," my Dad says sternly as Harry yanks himself away from him. I nod and take Harry's hand, pulling him quickly out of the room. I pull him outside and he jerks his hand away from mine. I spin around to look at him.

"What the hell was that!" He pats him lip where Aaron hit him, not looking at me. "Harry, answer me. Why did you attack him? What the hell were you thinking?"

"Did you not hear what he said?" he asks, surprised.

"Of course I did. I don't care what he said, though, you can't just go around hitting people! Especially not at an event like this!"

"Like hell I can't! That guys is an absolute asshole, I'm not going to let him talk about you or to you like that." He yells, walking around me and to his car.

"Where are you going?"

"We're going home. Get in the car."

"No, we are going to talk about this."

"There's nothing to talk about, now get in," he says, holding the passenger door open.

I scoff and climb into the car. He slams it shut and gets in the drivers seat, speeding out of the parking lot and racing home. I don't look at him or say anything. When he pulls into the driveway I get out without a word, walking quickly across the street to my house.

"Where are you going?" he yells, walking after me. I ignore him and walk up the porch, pulling out my keys and unlocking the door quickly. I open and move to close it before Harry can come inside, but he runs up and pushes it open, forcing his way in.

"Get out," I say, pointing outside. He shuts the door.

"No."

"Fine." I turn and go upstairs. I hear him follow me. I'm so angry right now. Who does that? Who just punches someone in the face? That doesn't happen in real life, only on TV.

"Are you seriously mad at me?" he asks, coming into my room and shutting the door. I go into the closet, and he follows me once again.

"Yes. Now get out and let me change."

We stare at each other for a minute before he slowly turns and leaves, shutting the door behind him. I change into a tank top and shorts, putting a robe on overtop before going into my room. Harry is standing looking out the window.

"What do you want to talk about?" I say shortly, not really in the mood to talk. He doesn't react to me. "Harry."

"What exactly happened with him?" he asks, not turning.

"Why does that matter? Nothing justifies the way you acted in there."

He turns to face me, eyes dark. "You heard him, right?"

"Yes."

"Then I don't understand why we're even talking about this."

"Harry, you don't get to just go around hitting people. You aren't in a gang anymore. That's not how people act."

"I'm not just going to let someone talk to me like that, Lana. That guy is a dick. He deserved it. He was being disrespectful to you and to our relationship. Don't think I'm going to just let that happen. Those two things tend to be the most important parts of my life."

I sigh, trying not to let his words soften me. "You can't just attack people. There are other ways to deal with people like that. I'm with you, aren't I? Why would you let some stupid, drunken comment get to you like that?"

"It wasn't one comment! He was staring at you the entire night, then he asks you to dance. And you actually agree! Then I can see that he's flirting, so I say something. You're mine. I wanted to make that clear to him. Clearly something more happened than what you told me, and to be frank, that kind of pissed me off. Then he said that last comment and I lost it," he explains. I can tell he's still angry.

"None of that gives you the right to punch him."

"Why did you lie to me?" he asks. I'm surprised at the hurt in his voice. That's why he's so mad?

"About Aaron?" He nods. "I don't know. I guess I was embarrassed."

"Why?"

"Because, Harry, I hooked up with him randomly in a bathroom. I felt so cheap and gross the next day. I'm so...ashamed that I did that. It's not me."

"So you had sex with him?" he asks bluntly. I feel myself wince a little at the words.

"Once," I say quietly. He stares at me for a minute before looking at the ground.

He finally speaks after a few minutes. "Okay."

What? "Okay?" He looks back at me and closes the distance between us.

"Yes. I just want you to tell me the truth. I was blindsided in there, Lana. That combined with him being an ass and the thought of you being with someone else just pushed me over the edge. I lost it, and I'm sorry. Like you said yesterday, we can't be mad about things we did before we met each other."

"You can't go around hitting people, Harry," I say, wrapping my arms around his torso. He hugs me back, kissing the top of my head.

"I know."

I pull away and see his lip is swollen, and there's some blood dried up around a small slit in his lip. I reach up to touch it and he winces. I lead him by the hand into the bathroom, taking out a cloth and some peroxide to clean the cut. I jump up on the counter and he stands between my legs, resting his hands on my thighs. I wet the cloth, dabbing the cut and cleaning up the blood. I put a little peroxide on the towel.

"This is going to sting," I say, reaching up to put it against his lip. He lets me, but flinches back a little when I touch him. I smile and rub his arm. I finish with the cut and wrap my arms around his neck. "I'm sorry I lied to you."

"It's okay, love." He kisses me softly. "I should probably go before your dad gets home."

"Yea, he isn't going to be very happy with you," I agree, brushing his hair back. He smiles slightly before kissing me again and walking out of the bathroom. "I'll see you tomorrow. Goodnight."

"Goodnight, Harry." He winks at me and walks out.

I feel guilty as soon as he's gone. Why did I lie again? I'm so stupid! I should have told Harry the whole truth. Aaron and I didn't just hook up once. We did it again after Harry and I agreed to be friends. I was upset. How was I supposed to tell Harry that?

How could I have been so stupid.
