Misfit

Chapter 35

Lana's POV

"Hey, Harry."

What the fuck? This is who Brooke brought? No, that isn't possible. It can't be.

"Niall?" Harry asks, clearly shocked.

"You two know each other?" Brooke asks, pointing between the two of them. The boys just stare at each other. Niall looks slightly amused. I look up at Harry and squeeze his hand. He snaps out of his shock and looks down at me quickly before looking back at Niall.

"You could say that."

"You moved in to the house on Brooke's street?" I ask, pointing at him. Brooke glares at me. I know I'm being rude. She isn't aware that I've met him before.

"I did. Had a little problem back home. Looks like I'll be living here too, Haz."

"Who the hell is Haz?" Brooke asks. Niall laughs and stands up.

"You are not living here," Harry says sternly. Everyone stares at him in shock. He doesn't look at anyone but Niall.

"Don't really have a choice, mate. Besides, you seem to like it here. I can see why. I think I'll like it here too," he says, turning to wink at Brooke. I look at Harry who is rolling his eyes.

"You could have gone wherever you wanted. Don't tell me this bullshit that you didn't have a choice. You came here because you knew it would piss me off. If Zayn-"

"Harry, I think we should talk about this later," I say, pulling him backwards so I can talk to him without everyone hearing. "Breathe, Harry." I say, rubbing his arm. He closes his eyes and I can see that it's hard for him to calm down right now. "We can't do anything about this. Niall lives here now. Let's just deal with it, okay? Is he a bad guy?"

"No, he's a pretty good guy. We were really good friends back home. I just don't like that he's here. It means that the rest of my past can follow me here too and I don't like that."

"You can't control where he lives, Harry. But, if you two were good friends before I don't see why you can't be now.." I say slowly, not sure how he'll react. He turns around and looks back at Niall, then back to me.

"I guess you're right. I didn't leave because of him. Actually leaving him and Liam without saying anything was really hard."

"Well, now maybe you can go back to being friends. Without being in a gang, though. I wouldn't really like that," I joke, taking his hand and leading him back to our friends. He laughs.

"Don't worry, I will never make that mistake again. Especially now that I have you to lose."

My heart melts. He said corny things like that all the time, but I love it. We both sit down to change our shoes.

"Alright, are we actually going to bowl or not?" Louis asks impatiently. El laughs and sits beside me.

"You go first, Lou." He starts punching the names into the keyboard. "How do you know who Niall is?" El whispers to me.

"Long story. I'll tell you later." She nods and claps when Louis gets a strike. Are all boys good at bowling? "El, did you get lots of the lighter balls?"

She nods. "I think we basically took them all...which probably was mean for everyone else. Oh well." She stands and takes her turn.

Everyone seems a little tense at first, but after the first two rounds even Niall and Harry are relaxed. They slowly warm up to each other and I'm surprised when Harry high-fives Niall after he gets a strike. They seem totally comfortable. Brooke is clearly crushing on Niall and I'm happy to see he seems to be returning the favour. We decide to bowl a second game. I'm having so much fun and I can see that everyone else is as well. Louis is also getting along really well with Niall. It's hard to believe they've only just met.

Four rounds into the second game I'm losing miserably. I stand up to take my fifth turn.

"You can do it, Lan!" El says, clapping.

"Don't mess up. Oh, and those little ditches on the side? You want to avoid those," Lou says sarcastically.

I turn and glare at Louis. "Do you think I won't smack you? Because I will if you want me to." Harry laughs and gets up from his seat, standing behind me and adjusting my grip on the ball. "This is so embarrassing," I whisper to him. He chuckles.

"It was your idea to go bowling, love. Just don't twist your wrist so much. Try holding it like this." He adjusts my body and my arm until he's satisfied. Then he kisses my cheek quickly and steps back so I can throw. I get a split. Seriously?

"It's hopeless. Harry, you should take my second turn for me." I sit down and fold my arms. He shakes his head while everyone else laughs at me.

"Looks like someone's a bit of a sore loser," Niall teases, poking my ribs. I squirm away from him as Harry throws the ball. He takes his turn right away and gets a strike before coming to sit down beside me. I can see he's trying not to show any reaction, but it's clear that he's holding back a smile. I stare at him.

"Don't hate me because I'm a fantastic bowler," he says, finally looking at me. I roll my eyes and go back to the table to get some food. I feel like we've been eating all night. Brooke joins me when her turn is over.

"This is going well, isn't it? Niall is great, right?"

I turn to see him talking with Harry and laughing about something. I have to admit, my first impression of him was wrong. He does seem like a really nice person. Plus he is really funny. "Yea, he is. Sorry we were so rude when we got here."

"No worries. You are definitely telling me what that is about later, though."

"Don't worry I will. Do you like him?"

She giggles a little and shushes me. "He'll hear you!"

"So that's a yes, then."

"I barely know him, Lana. But I would be lying if I said I wasn't interested. He's so cute! I feel like he's just perfect for me. Like Harry is great, but I couldn't handle that dark, sexy thing Harry has going. It's so intense." I smack her arm and she laughs.

"How many times do I have to tell you not to speak about my boyfriend like that!"

She shrugs and pours herself some pepsi from the pitcher. "It's not like I'm interested. No big deal. I get the feeling those two were pretty close, though. It's funny, Niall told me he was fro Bradford but he never mentioned having a friend that lives here."

"Probably just assumed you didn't know who Harry was."

"Probably. Anyway, I'm really hoping this could work out because I am really tired of tagging along with you two and your boy-toys." I laugh and nod.

"Yea, we were getting sick of you, too." She nudges me and goes to sit beside Niall again. I put my plate down and take a sip of my drink before walking to stand behind Harry. I wrap my arms around his neck, leaning down and putting my mouth to his ear. "How are you," I whisper. He puts his hands on my arms and turns his head a little.

"I'm great."

I kiss his cheek and release my hold on him to sit beside him. As I'm walking by he grabs my waist and pulls me onto his lap. "Harry, it's my turn," I say, trying to stand up. He holds me tighter.

"They can wait." He nuzzles his nose into the back of my neck.

"No, they can't," Lou says, standing up and unwrapping Harry's arms from my waist. I escape under his arm and he sits down on Harry's lap. "Here, Harry, I'll replace Lana while she takes her turn." Everyone laughs as I go to pick up my ball.

"Okay, take your time, Lan. I'm enjoying this." He wraps his arms around Louis jokingly and Lou jumps up in reaction. Harry leans back into his chair and laughs as Lou goes back to sit beside El.

"Your boyfriend is a freak, LanLan."

When we are finally done the game my wrist is sore and everyone is laughing at how bad I did. I didn't realize that everyone could bowl except me. Fantastic. They continue to tease me as we leave so I wrap my arms around Harry's waist and hide my face against his body. He puts an arm around my shoulder.

"It's okay that you're a bad bowler, babe. I probably won't break up with you." I look up at him and glare while he laughs. "I mean, unless you get worse. I don't know if I can be seen in public with someone that bad." I step away and smack his arm as everyone laughs.

"Alright my so-called friends. What are we doing now?"

"My parents are gone for the weekend. We can all hang out at my place?" Brooke says, stepping up to her car. We all agree and go to our separate vehicles to go to her house. I realize it's been a long time since I've been there.

"What are you thinking about?" Harry asks, putting his hand on my thigh as we drive.

"I just realized how long it's been since I've been to Brooke's house. I used to go there all the time." Have I been spending all my time with Harry? "Okay, I think my grace period is going to be ending soon."

"Grace period?"

"Yea, the three of us have this deal that we let the others spend all their time with their boyfriends at first. 'Cuz that's when you want to be together all the time and stuff."

"And now you've capped out?"

I look over to see him smirking at the road. "Don't judge us, Harry. They haven't said anything yet, but we've been dating for a couple weeks now."

"I see. I was getting sick of you anyway." I glare at him and he chuckles at himself. We pull up in front of Brooke's house last. We walk up as Louis and El are taking their shoes off. Suddenly El looks at me. I know what's about to happen. We both scream and sprint through to dining room and back to the living room, racing for our favourite chair. We jump onto it at the same time, but I land first so she's slightly on top of me.

"HA! I got here first! It's mine, darling," I say, trying to push her off me. She squirms around, trying to wedge herself into the chair. All three boys come walking in, staring at us with slightly amused expressions. We both ignore them, trying to wrestle the other out of the chair.

"What are they doing?" I hear Niall ask.

"Haven't got a clue," Harry says quietly.

El suddenly squeals and I look to see Louis lifting her up. "LOUIS! Put me down! I was winning!" She continues to flail around and Louis lays her on the couch and quickly sits on her before she can get up. She finally gives in after a minute and I point and laugh at her. "Oh, shut up. You better not get out of that chair. It's mine." She glares at me and I settle into the chair.

"Okay, what is happening?" Harry asks, still standing with Niall and staring at me.

"This is the most comfortable chair on the planet," I explain, putting it into the reclining position.

"We fight for it every time. One time I gave Lana a black eye," El says, trying to push Louis off of her. I nod in agreement and Harry chuckles, walking over to me.

"Let me see what the fuss is about," he says, putting his arms under me. I grip the chair and push his arms away.

"No! It's mine! I won it fair and square. You can sit on me if you'd like, but my butt is not moving from this seat."

"You did not win, Lana, this crazy boy removed me from it," Eleanor says, finally giving up on trying to move her boyfriend.

"Babe, you weigh nothing. I can easily remove you myself," Harry warns, smirking at me. I shake my head, but I know he's serious. To my surprise he simply pushes me to the side so he can squeeze in beside me. Once he sits down I raise my eyebrows questioningly. "Wow, this is nice." He wraps his arms around me so I'm laying against his front and between his legs. "That's better."

I laugh and lace my fingers in his as he wraps his arms around my waist. Brooke comes in with arms full of coolers. Niall takes a bunch from her hands and passes one to me and Harry, then opens his own.

"Wow, this is probably to girliest drink I've ever had," he says, taking a sip and sitting on the love seat across from the couch Lou and El are sitting on. Brooke sits beside him.

"Shush, this is all I have," she says. "So, how do you two know each other?" She asks, referring to Harry and Niall. I feel Harry stiffen a little, but Niall smiles.

"We were in the same gang," he states simply, taking another sip. Brooke chokes on her drink and starts coughing. I look at El and Louis. They're both staring at me, mouths hanging open. I smile lightly and look away.

"Niall, I'm going to kill you," Harry groans.

"What?"

"You know what."

"You never told them either?"

"Of course not!" Harry says, half yelling.

"How was I supposed to know that?"

"Wait, wait," Brooke interjects when she finally stops coughing. "You were in a gang?" she asks Niall. He nods and she looks at Harry. "And you were in the same one? Did you know about this?" She asks me. I nod slowly. "Wow."

It's silent for a few minutes and I can tell that everyone is feeling uncomfortable. Except Niall. He doesn't seem to care. He breaks the silence.

"Shit, it's not a big deal. We were in a gang, now we aren't. And now we're here. Can we move on?"

"Actually mate, it is a big deal," Louis says. "Wait why did you move here?" he asks, looking at Harry.

"It's a long story," he says slowly. I realize that it's one that I haven't even heard yet. Suddenly I realize there's so much I don't know about this boy. I feel a lump rise in my throat and I feel like crying for some reason. I unwrap Harry's hands from my waist and get up from the chair.

"I'll be right back." I half-run out of the room and go down the hall and into the bathroom, locking the door behind me. I lean on my hands against the sink and try to stop the tears before they fall, breathing deeply to remove the growing lump in my throat. A few tears start to fall down my cheeks. I concentrate on my breathing. Suddenly there's a soft knock on the door.

"Lana?" It's Harry. "Babe, let me in." I slowly unlock the door and he pushes it open. His eyes go wide when he sees the tears on my face. I quickly wipe them away and lean against the vanity.

"I just need a minute, Harry."

"Why are you crying?" he asks. The concern is evident in his voice. I close my eyes and breathe before opening them again. He stands in front of me and pulls my against him, hugging me and rubbing my back. "What's wrong?"

"I haven't asked you questions about your past because I know you don't want to talk about it. But, I need you to tell me why you came here. What happened? Why did you get arrested?"

He pulls back slowly and looks into my eyes. "Why is that so important?"

I push him back more. "Because! Harry, you are keeping so much from me! I have let you into every part of my life, and you can't even tell me one thing about yours? You honestly think something you tell me is going to make me leave you or something?"

He sighs and runs his hand through his hair. "That isn't my life anymore. I just want to forget about it."

"Maybe you've moved on, and I'm glad that you have. But it is part of who you are and you are keeping all of it from me! Do you not trust me enough to tell me?"

"Of course I do! I just don't get why you need to know. It was before I met you."

I sigh and shake my head. "Harry, just give me something. Anything." He stares at me and remains silent. I raise my eyebrows and wait, but he doesn't say anything. "Fine." I walk out and go into the living room. "I need to go home, guys. My dad just called. See you later." As I'm saying bye Harry comes in behind me. I quickly turn and go to the front door. He follows and grabs my arm, but I yank it out of his grasp. "Don't, Harry. Just don't." I glare at him before going out the door and slamming it shut behind me. I'm thankful that he doesn't come out and try to drive me home. It's a pretty far walk, but I would rather walk than drive with him right now.

I arrive at my house just over thirty minutes later to find that my dad is gone. Weird. I unlock the door and go inside and straight up to my room. Harry had given me some sweatpants to wear when I was at his house the other day. and I still had them. I take my jeans off and slide them on. I go back to my bed when I hear my phone vibrating on it. Harry's name is on the screen. He's trying to call me. I hit the ignore button and flop onto my back, staring at the ceiling. Why can't he talk to me? Does he not understand that I couldn't break up with him even if I wanted to? Nothing he tells me would change that.

I hear a loud bang on the door downstairs. I run down without thinking and swing it open. Harry. I quickly swing the door shut again and lock it, leaning back against it.

"Come on, Lana, let me in." I close my eyes and lean my head back against the door. "Please?"

I start pacing in front of the door, hoping he'll leave soon so I don't lose my resolve and let him in. After a few minutes I decide I think he's gone, so I look out the front window. Suddenly I hear footsteps behind me and I jump and turn around.

"Harry! What the hell!"

"What? You wouldn't let me in," he says calmly, making his way to me.

"Because I don't want to talk to you. Just because I don't open the front door doesn't mean you should go find another way to get inside. You need to go." I walk to the front door and open it, resting my hand on the handle and putting one hand on my hip. He walks towards me, but he doesn't leave.

"Can we please talk about this?"

"No." I gesture outside, waiting for him to leave. Instead, he turns around and sits on the couch, folding his arms over his chest. I shut the door and go upstairs without saying anything. I slam the door shut and lock it. Now I am mad. Who does he think he is? He can't shut me out and expect me to just want to talk to him. I pace in front of my bed for a few minutes. I don't know what to do right now. I have a feeling he's stubborn enough to sit down there until I go down, eve if that means he sleeps there. I stay in my room for about an hour, but I never hear him leave. It's after 11 now, and my dad hasn't come back yet, either. I decide to go downstairs to try to get Harry to leave.

When I'm walking down the stairs I can see the back of his curly hair. He's still in the same position he was in when I went upstairs. He doesn't hear me come down. I walk around the couch and he jumps a little when he sees me.

"Shit, you scared me," he says, laughing a little.

"You need to leave, Harry," I say simply, crossing my arms. He gets up and stands ini front of me. He reaches to touch my arm, but I step back so he can't. I know that if he touches me I'll melt. He looks hurt when I pull away. I don't meet his eyes.

"Baby, please," he whispers. He looks desperate.

"Why did you get arrested?" I ask quietly, seeing if he's willing to talk to me. He looks back and forth between my eyes for a minute before turning around. He takes a few steps away and then turns back around. He just stares at me, not speaking. I sigh and look away from him, shaking my head a little. "Just go."

"I'm not going anywhere."

"You clearly don't want to talk to me! So I really don't understand why you even came here."

"Because you're upset with me. Of course I came."

I laugh shortly at his words. "I'm upset because you won't talk to me. That obviously hasn't changed, so there is no point in you being here right now." He looks at the floor and I take a step towards him. "Just tell me something, Harry, anything. Don't shut me out, please."

He shakes his head. "Trust me, Lana, you don't want to know. I'm not keeping it from you because I like to piss you off! It's just better for you not to know."

"How is it better! How is this better?" I ask, gesturing between us. "Nothing you tell me is going to change the way I feel about you. I just need to know that you can open up to me, that you're able to let me in."

"I have."

"No, you haven't. I don't know anything about your life in Bradford."

"You don't need to."

"Maybe not, but I want to."

He runs his hand through his curls, clearly frustrated with how stubborn I'm being. We stand in silence for a minute. His face softens suddenly and before I can react he hugs me tightly.

"I don't want you to be ashamed of me," he admits softly against my hair. I sigh and wrap my arms around him.

"I promise, I won't be." He sighs against my hair before pulling back slowly and leading me to the couch to sit with him.

"Okay. What do you want to know?"
