Misfit

Chapter 2

I couldn't move. I was definitely embarrassed now. I could feel everyone looking at me, but I couldn't take my eyes off the beautiful ones looking at me. There were little flecks of green and brown mixed in, probably only visible from close up. Close up, like I was right now.

"Careful, love. You might want to slow down," he said, chuckling.

I quickly righted myself and took a small step back. I'd never seen this boy before, I was sure. If there was a boy this handsome in Holmes Chapel, I would know.

"Are you alright?" he asked. I suddenly realized I was staring. Smooth, Lana.ˆ

"Oh, yea, sorry. I'm fine. Sorry for running into you like that. I wasn't paying attention. I can be a little clumsy." Why am I rambling?

"Don't worry about it," he said, smirking at me. My stomach did a slight turn.

"Are you new? I don't think I've seen you around here." I asked, suddenly very curious about this boy.

"Yea, just moved here. It's my first day. I'm Harry," He said, extending his hand toward me.
I shook it lightly, surprised by his manners. "Langley."

He raised one eyebrow at me. Why did I say that? I hated my name, I never introduced myself with it. I was Lana.

"That's an unusual name. I quite like it. I assume you are from America?" He asked, smirking again. I never thought a smirk could be so adorable.

"Yea, it's weird I know. Everyone calls me Lana. And yea I'm from California, but I moved here when I was 11."

"Good to meet you, Lana. I'll see you around." And with that, he walked off towards the serving area.

I watched him walk away before turing to look at the table my friends were at. El and Brooke were both staring at him, then looked to me with mouths hanging open. Then I saw josh, still standing where I left him, hands crossed over his chest. He did not look happy. Great. I quickly exited the cafeteria and went to my locker to get my books for my next class. I found myself wondering about this new boy. I didn't really get a good look at him; I couldn't stop staring at his eyes. They were gorgeous and captivating. I was pulled out of my thoughts when I heard giggling and heels clicking down the hall toward me.

"Lan! Who was that? He's gorgeous! Did you see the way he caught you? So adorable. What's his name?" Brook asked a string of questions before I could even turn around to look at her.

"Harry. His name is Harry. He's new, I guess."

"I'd say!" El exclaimed. "I've never seen him before. I would remember a body like that. Did you get a good look at him? God bless his parents, I mean seriously. Those are some good genetics."

I started laughing at them as i closed my locker. "El, do you remember Louis? Brown hair, tall, crazy about you?"

She laughed. "I'm not interested. I'm just stating the obvious fact." She said, shrugging. With that, the bell rang, signalling the end of lunch and the start of our next class. I sighed, knowing I had three more classes to sit through before I could go home. I said bye to my friends and turned to go to biology. I entered the class and took a seat near the back where no one else was. None of my friends were in my class, so I sat alone. Thankfully we hadn't had a lab or group assignment yet, so I didn't have to go through the awkward process of finding a group that would inevitably be afraid of me. I didn't get the whole popularity thing and to be honest, I had no idea how i ended up in that group. I didn't fit the profile. I cared about school and my grades. I wasn't mean to people. I didn't really like to party, I just went to get away from my parents.

As the late bell rang, my teacher stood up. Mr. Davis did not like me one bit. I'm guessing it's because my dad was so rude to him. But that was my dad. He never failed to be an absolute asshole.

"Okay class, today we are going to start talking about DNA. Who can tell me-" He was cut off my someone entering the room, obviously late. I looked up to see Harry standing there.

"Sorry, sir. I couldn't find the room."

"Quite alright, Mr. Styles. Next time I won't be so lenient. Please find a seat." He gestured toward the desks and continued talking about DNA. Harry turned toward the class, and I noticed every girl gawking at him. He didn't seem to notice. Or maybe he was used to it. He scanned the room and started making his way to the back. When he saw me, he smiled slightly. He slid into the desk right next to me, despite the other empty seats around us.

"Why hello, Langley," he said, smiling at me.

"It's Lana."

"Right. Forgive me if Langley was easier to remember. Hard to forget a name like that," he said, turning to pay attention to Mr. Davis. I scowled at him. He better not get used to calling me that. I would not like that.

I noticed more about him than his eyes this time. He had curly brown hair that he frequently ran his fingers through to push it away from his face. He had strong arms and what seemed to be a very athletic body. When he smiled at me, I could see a small trace of dimples. How cute.

"So, today we are going to start our first lab. We are going to extract DNA from strawberries. Everyone pick a partner. Oh, and whoever you pick will be your lab partner for the rest of the semester, so choose wisely," Mr. Davis said, turning to return to his desk. "The instructions are on page 137 of your textbook. Supplies are on the back counter. Everyone get started."

Everyone started pairing off, and I groaned internally. I was good at biology, and I wasn't worried about the project. It was finding a partner that I didn't like.

Harry turned to look at me. "Seems everyone has found a lab partner. Be mine?"

Oh. I had forgotten about him sitting next to me, and was suddenly very grateful that he did. I nodded and we picked up our textbooks and went to get started. Harry clearly knew what he was doing, which I was happy about. What did surprise me, though was that he made no attempt to talk to me. Not to brag, but boys usually took interest in me. I didn't care and to be honest I didn't always like it. But it's true. Harry never looked twice, though. He clearly was not interested. In fact, he looked bored. It made me self conscious.

When we finished the section assigned for today, we started to clean up, still in silence. as the bell rang, he turned and gave me a slight wave before heading out of the room. I was confused. Harry obviously did not like me very much, but I didn't understand why. I hadn't done anything to him. What was his problem?

I walked out of biology and made my way towards my statistics class. It was the easiest math class, so I decided to take it. I hated math. I was good at it, but i just did not want to waste any time on it. Eleanor was in that class as well, so when I walked in i took my seat next to her.

"Lan? What's up?" She asked, noting my distraction.

"Hm? Oh, it's nothing. I'm fine." I said, giving her a small smile. She pursed her lips, knowing I was lying, but she didn't push it any further. As I was about to ask her about my situation, Harry walked into the classroom.

"Great," I muttered, under my breath.

"He took the seat directly in front of me. As he sat down, he turned around and looked at me, his expression blank. He only looked at me for a second before turning back around.

"What was that?" El asked, clearly intrigued.

"I have no idea." I didn't want to discuss it. Seriously, what was his deal?

El and I started writing notes to each other to pass the time without drawing attention to ourselves.

She filled me in on some of the gossip she'd heard since lunch and then we proceeded to poke fun at Mrs. Matthews. She was so dull and her voice was so shrill.

As the bell rang, we got up to leave the class.

"So, Lana, are you actually going to come to Josh's party tomorrow? I know it's weird going to his house but we really want you to come! We can just hang out with us girls. I'm sure Josh won't try anything, especially after the way you put him in his place today," she said, nudging me playfully with her elbow.

I laughed and sighed. I could see Harry out of the corner of my eye, walking closely behind us.

"I don't know, El. We'll see. Do you wanna get out of here? I do not feel like sitting through Mr.
Anders's class. So boring. I hate history."

"I would love to, but my mom is picking me up today so I should probably be here when she does that," she said, pouting. I waved bye to her as I quickly walked out the doors and got into my car. It had been a long day, and I was ready to go home and collapse on my wonderfully comfortable bed.
