Chapter 7

"Avia, will you talk to me please?" Harry begged as we burst through the hotel doors.

"Luggage first, talk second." I said, breathless from my all the running as I started to search the room to find where the bellboy might have put our bags.

"Av! Just breathe for a second. Let talk." Harry begged again, taking a seat on the armchair in the corner of the room.

"There's nothing to talk about Harry. We're leaving. Where the hell did he put the damn bags?!" I exclaimed, walking around the dining table in at the side of the suit, hoping the bags might be somewhere around there.

"You see," Harry started, with a sigh, "that right there is something to talk about. Why the hell are we leaving? We just got here." I didn't answer him, I just continued to search around the room. He sighed again, "If you find the bags, will you talk to me?" I stood up straight from my position on the floor, looking under the couch, and nodded my head. He rolled his eyes, "The master bedroom, love."

Of course! The master bedroom. I quickly hurried into the huge room with a California king bed as the centerpiece.

Just as he'd suspected, the bags were sitting at the foot of the enormous bed, "Aha!" I exclaimed, running to the bags.

"Talk Avia." Harry said, walking into the room behind me.

I grabbed one of the bags on wheels and started pulling it towards the front door of the hotel, "What do you want to know?"

I heard Harry's hands hit his sides, as if he'd thrown them up, exasperated, "I don't know, how about why you took of in a dead sprint when we got out of the flower shop?"

I cleared my throat as I walked back to the room to grab another bag and repeat the process, "Easy. You bumped into my brother, who is chasing me around the world, trying to force me into a hospital."

I caught a glimpse of Harry's creased eyebrows on my way to the door. "So, you did the mature thing to do, and ran away?" He asked, sarcastically.

I placed the suitcase at the front door and walked back over to Harry, my hands on my hips, "I've never claimed to be mature, and I really, really don't want to die in a hospital. So, yeah, I ran away." Then walked into the room and grabbed another bag, "Could you help me with the luggage?"

"We're not leaving, Av." Harry said from the other room.

I dragged the duffel bag I had in my hands right past him to to the front door. If he was against us leaving, then why was he letting me move the luggage? "We're leaving, Harry."

Harry walked over to where I stood, "How do you know he wants to force you into a hospital?" He asked, crossing his arms.

"Oh, I don't know Harry. Maybe the fact that, when I left he begged me to go back to chemo, and kept telling me how sick I was." I said, a little sarcastically, then started to go back to the master bedroom to get the last of the bags.

Harry stopped me, catching my wrist as I tried to move passed him, "Av, your list says to stay in a five star hotel for a night. How about you just calm down, and we'll leave in the morning?"

I yanked my wrist away, "No, we have to leave now. He'll find us, Harry."

"He was all the way on the other side of town, Avia. Where we were lost, remember?" He asked, in a voice that said I was being stupid. I wasn't being stupid.

I walked straight up to him, tilting my head back slightly to look him straight in the eyes, "He followed me to Belgium, Harry. To Belgium. He can find me here, tonight. He's going to find me, and put me in a hospital," I said, my voice breaking slightly. But I cleared it, because I didn't want to cry now, "The list says, 'Die in Greece.' Number one hundred, 'Die in Greece.' Not, number one hundred, 'Die hooked up to a million machines with no hair.' Okay, Harry? I know a lot of people die fighting, and I admire them for that but Harry," I said, my voice almost as quiet as a whisper,

"I'm scared. I'm not as brave as those people who die fighting. So, we're leaving tonight, because I'm scared. So, help me with the luggage."

His eyes flickered with uncertainty for a second, and I swore they shined with unshed tears. I thought I saw his resolve crumbling, until he spoke up, "No, Avia. We're not leaving tonight. Because you don't need to be scared with me here. I won't let Steven touch you, okay? You need to finish your list, so just stay here for the night, and we'll leave first thing in the morning."

I sighed, frustrated, "I swear, Harry, If I even see Steven, I'm going to be so angry with you."

I thought next he would say something like, 'You won't I promise' or 'It'll be okay, Av' but he surprised me by saying, "Av, I've been thinking, maybe you should see him."

My eyebrows creased in confusion, "What?"

He shrugged, looking into my eyes, "Maybe you should just talk to him. See exactly what he wants. Maybe he doesn't want to just put you in a hospital. Maybe he wants to say something to you that he never got to say. I think you should just be sure, Av."

I shook my head, "No, Harry. I can't. I won't-"

"Avia." He interrupted, "I don't think you understand how amazing you are. You're a hell of a lot to lose, Avia. Your brother, he's losing you and this is his last chance. If I were in his position, you running away this afternoon would have broken my heart. I've fallen in love with you, Avia, so I know what he's losing. I feel it. What if he just wants to tell you, what I get to tell you all the time? What if he just wants to say, 'I love you' one last time?"

I looked down at my feet, his words weighing on me heavily, "Why would he follow me around the world to tell me he loves me?"

"I would. Avia, you're worth it. Please, just try to put yourself in his shoes." Harry almost begged.

Steven had his last goodbye. I told him I'd never see him again, and he was supposed to say everything he needed to say. I'd made it so clear what my mission was, and that it was the final farewell. Steven wasn't trying to tell me he loved me. The only logical explanation would be that he wanted to put me in a hospital.

I shook my head, "NoHarry . I won't talk to him." I sighed, "But I will stay the night, only if you promise you won't let Steven take me to a hospital. You have to swear."

Harry closed his eyes and shook his head, "Fine, Avia. I promise I won't let Steven take you to a hospital."

His hands reached out, trying to find me. I moved closer to him and allowed him to snake his arms around my waist, puling me close, "So we're at number one hundred?" He whispered, the mood completely changed as the air that was just filled with frustrations and disagreement now had a melancholy feel.

I nodded, my face in the crook of his neck, "But lets not be sad, okay?"

"We can be sad when it's time to say goodbye, right?" He whispered. The phrase seemed to have become our way to lift the sadness, when it became too heavy on our shoulders. We were postponing the grief, which in the end was going to take its toll on Harry after I was gone, but at that moment, I was too selfish to even care. I wanted to be happy with him, so I would put it off as long as he wanted.

I allowed myself to relax into his arms, and only then, when all the adrenaline from running away and needing to get out left, did I feel the complete exhaustion hit me. I felt as if I was going to collapse. I put all my weight on Harry and whispered, "I think I need to go to bed."

He nodded, understanding, and put his arms under my knees, bringing me up to be carried bridal style to the big golden bed in the middle of the master bedroom.

Once he put me down, he started to walk away and I almost drifted to sleep, until my mind became painfully aware of something, "Harry!" I called, putting all my energy into getting him to hear me, "I need to take my medicine."

He walked back into the room, apparently already one step ahead of me, with my medicine kit in his hands. I smiled sheepishly, still not completely comfortable with him knowing about my medicine and whatnot.

He handed it to me and I looked up at him, a slight blush spreading across my cheeks; I didn't think I would be able to make it to the bathroom to do my injections, but it wasn't really something I wanted him to see, "Harry, could you, um, turn around while I do it?"

His eyebrows creased, "You're not going to go to the bathroom?"

I shook my head and bit my lip, "I literally feel like I'm lifting a twenty pound weight, just holding my medicine. I don't think I can make it right now. Could you just, um, look away?"

He nodded and turned, his back now facing me. I quickly did my injections and dry swallowed my pills. I kicked off my shoes when I was finished and got under the plush covers, feeling secure in them.

"You can turn around now." I said, already dozing off. Before I finally fell asleep, I felt Harry press his lips softly to my forehead.

When I woke up, the room was still dark except for a small streak of light coming from the front door. I heard the door close quietly and Harry padded lightly into the room, sliding into bed next to me. I cleared my throat slightly but my voice was still thick from sleep, "Harry, where were you?" I asked.

He held onto my waist, and pulled me against him, snuggling in and getting comfortable, "The front desk wanted to talk to me about some problems they were having with the credit card."

My eyes closed with his answer, and I whispered back, "It couldn't wait?"

He shook his head, "You taught me a thing or two about time, Avia. Nothing can wait."

I just nodded, and drifted back to sleep.

When I woke again, sunshine was leaking through the cracks in the blinds, creating lines of light across the bed. I couldn't find Harry when I stretched my fingers out across the bed, so I sat up in search of him. Bad idea. I felt extremely light-headed, the feeling you get when you sit up too fast - the room was swaying. I could tell I was getting close to the end, with a week to spare.

I heard footsteps coming from the bathroom, and sure enough it was the person I had been searching for. He smiled softly at me, "How are you? You dropped asleep pretty fast there last night."

I smiled back, "I'm still pretty tired, but I'll be fine."

He seemed to study my face for a few moments, before he spoke up, "Maybe you should try and sleep for a little bit more. I'll wake you up in half an hour and you can get ready for the flight."

I shook my head, "Sleep won't help. Plus, I couldn't go back to bed if I tried. I'm awake now."

He smiled softly and walked over, taking a seat at the edge of the bed. He stroked my hair as he asked, "How was it sleeping in a five star hotel bed, love?"

I shrugged, "Comfortable, I guess. Nothing too special."

He laughed softly, "I told you."

I rolled my eyes, " I know, I know. But you were also the one who insisted we stay."

He laughed again, "Not for the hotel experience sake. For your list's sake."

I smiled, "Yeah yeah. Is our flight booked?"

He nodded and turned to lay next to me, kicking his shoes off as he did, pulling me close enough that our noses were touching, "Yes, four hours from now."

"And what is now?" I asked, my eyes closing slightly, feeling extremely comfortable in his arms.

Through my heavy lidded eyes I saw him smile, "Its time to sleep now."

And I did. I woke to Harry lightly shaking my shoulder, "Wake up, love. You have to get ready for the flight."

I nodded and tried to sit up, but it felt like I was attempting to run a marathon, "Could you help me up?" I asked, my voice thick with sleep.

I saw the slight flicker of sadness cross Harry's face before he quickly hid it. He knew exactly what was going on, but I felt the need to elaborate. As he lifted me by my arms to sit up at the edge of the bed, I started talking, "I had a certain amount of time before my body became used to the medicine I'm on, and as soon as it becomes used to it, it stops working and the cancer takes over. That's why I'm so tired now, and feel so weak all of a sudden. My body became used to it yesterday, and I have around a week left."

He didn't say anything, he just nodded, while biting his lip, and after a few seconds leaned in to give me a lingering kiss. It was the kind of kiss that led me to believe he wanted more, but was afraid he'd break me.

That thought struck a memory from the day before. I instantly became apologetic, "Oh Harry. I completely forgot about last night. I'm so sorry. Why didn't you remind me? I'm such an idiot. I -"

"Avia!" He said with a playful grin, "Shut up."

"But, Harry-"

"I don't want to hear anything more about it. Go get ready." He said, the smile still playing at his lips.

I rolled my eyes and sighed, "Fine." I got up and made my way to the bathroom. I was a little wobbly but I made it.

Right as I was about to close the door, Harry called out to me, "I love you by the way."

I grinned looked at through the crack in the door, "You know I love you.".

An hour later we were ready to go and checking out. We were about to get in the taxi when I saw him. He was standing on the other side of the road looking over at us, or more precisely, Harry.

His eyes had dark rings around them, like he hadn't slept in days, and he was wrapped up in a heavy coat, which was completely unusual for the middle of summer.

Unlike the day before, he hadn't once set his eyes on me. He was looking only at Harry.

I jumped into the cab, my heart beating fast and grabbed Harry's wrist, pulling him in after me. "The airport, please." I said to the driver, and we drove away from Steven and anything left unsaid between us.

After an hour of airport security, we took our seats on the plane and it suddenly became real. This was the last stop. I wasn't going to another country, on another plane.

The thought should have scared me out of my wits, but I'd been preparing myself all summer. And after such a crazy, hectic time, I kind of felt like I was going to be at peace.

The only thing tugging at my heartstrings was the beautiful boy sitting in the seat next to me. I was so madly in love with him, and he would be the only thing that would make me reluctant to leave this world behind. I wanted him forever, and as I drifted into yet another exhausted sleep, I prayed that one day I could get my wish.

Harry woke me when we landed, but he basically had to drag me through security. He helped me into the cab and I reluctantly fell asleep on the way to the beach side hotel.

When we arrived I said to Harry, "Please don't let me sleep too often."

He shook his head with a forced, small smile, "Its fine Av. You need the rest.". He said, stroking his thumb across what must have been dark circles under my eyes.

"I feel like I'm wasting time." I said, my mouth slowly turning into a frown.

I saw as the words struck him, he winced as he understood what I meant. I was sleeping away the end of my life. He nodded, "Alright, I won't let you sleep for more than an hour at a time."

"Half an hour." I protested, quickly.

He looked as if he might argue with me, but then decided not to waste his breath. "Okay. Half an hour."

He leaned down and gave me a lingering kiss, which seemed to have become the norm. As if he couldn't bring himself to take his lips from mine. I didn't mind; I felt the same way.

We got out of the cab and I lost my breath as I caught sight of the beautiful beach side hotel I'd chosen as my death bed.

The water glistened in a way that couldn't be caught on camera and put on their website. And days of staring at their photos on my laptop couldn't have given me the extremely comforting vibe that seemed to radiate from the small, one story hotel.

One of my hands found Harry's and the other went up to cover my mouth. "Its perfect." I managed to whisper, as I reveled in thankfulness that I was able to see this place before I died.

I looked to Harry and found his shining eyes. He bit his lip for a second and then his mouth found mine, giving me a soft peck, and then whispering in a trembling voice, "Just like you."

The next few days - my last days - were amazing, only slightly stained with sadness.

When I could, we swam and danced and kissed. And when I couldn't we whispered and held each other and Harry stroked my hair.

My physical pain often caused Harry a lot of emotional pain. After a rough night were every single inch of me felt on fire, I woke in the morning to find Harry's pillow tear stained and deep bags under his eyes.

I felt horrible for braking him like that, but figured I'd be out of his hair soon enough.

I slowly became weaker and weaker, completely bedridden, but still taking my medicine, hoping that it would keep me alive for just a little bit longer with Harry.

But the day had to come.

Harry was in the kitchen getting me a glass of water and the pain attacked me like never before. Every single cell of my body was in pain. I managed to let out a cry, "Harry!"

I heard a glass shatter in the kitchen and Harry's footsteps racing towards the bedroom. He appeared at the door, and as soon as his eyes found mine, they started to pour relentlessly. He knew it was the end.

He was by my side in an instant, his mouth on mine, again and again. "I love you, I love you, I love you..." He was whispering, over and over, his voice quiet and broken, his hands clutching my face.

"I love you so much." I managed to whisper, through the pain and tears, "forever. I love you, forever."

"Forever, Avia." He promised, tears pouring faster now. "What do you need? Anything, love. Anything." He said, kissing me again.

"The list." I choked.

He was gone for only a second, to grab the list off of the bedside table. I looked at the tattered paper, that had controlled my life for the last few months, and that had lead me to Harry. Despite everything, I smiled.

"Cross off number one hundred, please." I whispered to Harry.

He nodded and grabbed a pen, crossing it off quickly and then handing it to me.

I clutched it tightly and felt Harry's lips again. I could hardly believe I was leaving him. I pressed my hand to his face, "I'm sorry. I love you."

He just shook his head, tears still pouring.

And I drifted into the darkness to the sound of Harry's voice.
