Heartbreaker

Chapter 4

HARRY

My eyes eventually flickered open and darted immediately to the clock. I groaned and rolled onto my back after realizing it was an hour until school started and I'd have to sit through several hours of boredom. Time in a morning was never an issue for me, but for Morgan it was a completely different story.

Morgan constantly felt the need to impress everyone though I never understood why. Every school morning, she'd get up at least two hours before school to perfect herself, her makeup, her hair, her clothes and her attitude.

"Harry, get up sweetheart. You told me you promised Morgan a ride and I'm leaving in a few minutes." I sighed and rolled off the bed, rubbing my eyes as I got to the bathroom next to my bedroom.

When I glanced to my left, I noticed Morgan stood by her window, plodding some earrings into her small ears. When she looked up and made eye contact with me, I sent her a tight smile and awkward wave which she mirrored before staggering her eyes around, looking for a way to get out of my sight.

Once I'd slipped out of my boxers and stepped into the shower, I stood rigid for a moment, remembering what happened the night previous, the thing that had made us so awkward today.

"You always do that..." Morgan trailed off, tilting her head slightly but not removing her eyes from mine. I finished the piece of cookie I currently chewing on and swallowed it before opening my mouth.

"Do what?" I asked, bringing my eyebrows together.

"Make a comment about me being perfect or say something adorable about how much I mean to you." She let a small smile tug up the corners of her wet lips and I did too.

"Is that a bad thing?" I chuckled, raising an eyebrow in amusement. There's never pleasing some women is there? They scream giving them compliments because they don't believe you and scold you for giving too many — that's something I never understood.

"No," she laughed as her head dropped for a moment, "Of course it isn't, I mean, what girl doesn't wanna' hear those things of a really good looking guy?" Even in the dim moonlight, I could still see the faint blush on her cheeks.

"So you think I'm good looking?" I smirked, trying to find her eyes again with my own but she refused to let them meet at any cost. I did have a tiny crush on Morgan — who wouldn't? She's beautiful and amazing, but I tried my absolute best to push physical attraction away.

"A really good looking guy," she corrected, "That's undeniable. Saying that you're ugly is one big ass lie." I laughed along with her as her eyes finally decided to meet mine once again.

"Well if it makes you less embarrassed," I began, clearing my throat slightly, "I... I uh, think you're really pretty." I closed my eyes tight at my choice of words sounding so child like. Way to make a fool out of yourself Harry.

I heard her melodic giggle dance through my ears and my eyes darted to her. "Oh, Har, you're cute." She continued to giggle, her shoulders moving rapidly as she did so.

"I think we established 'good looking' not cute," I teased, "But yeah, without sounding like a ten year old or making this awkward..." I trailed off, waiting for her eyes to meet mine and her giggles to die down. When she was focusing on me, I parted my lips, "You're beautiful."

The intensity of our eye contact made me shiver. Her expression hadn't changed yet, she looked frozen except from her chest moving to breathe and the change in color on her flawless cheeks.

"You think I'm beautiful?" She asked sheepishly.

"I've always thought that, Morgan." I confirmed, a lopsided grin taking over my face. She mirrored me and I saw her shuffle more closely toward me. I didn't mind, especially because of the freezing cold breezes that were making me colder by the second.

I reached up to tuck her fringe behind her ear and trail my hand across her cheek, feeling the heat radiate from her blush, until it landed in my lap again. She smiled and brought her left hand up toward my head, running her fingers trough my messy hair and resting it on the around my neck. I gulped as her other hand palmed the left side of my chest and she stared at it making the goosebumps rise higher.

My eyes fluttered down to her hand and again, I gulped. There was no way in hell I would pass up a kiss with her unless I thought it would jeopardize anything in our friendship. My tongue slid over both my lips and I met her eyes again whilst her fingers tickled my baby hairs.

"Your hearts beating really fast." She commented quietly, smiling.

"It's because I really want to do something, but I can't." I admitted, my face full of seriousness as I stared at her. Gulping again, I waited for her eyes to flutter up to my own, away from my chest.

"What would that be?" She asked, staring intently into my eyes as her left hand removed itself from my neck. I stopped her other from leaving my chest by placing my own hands over it.

"Something that could change, or even ruin a friendship." I whispered, swallowing the saliva that rose up into my gullet. I saw her eyes flicker to my lips for a moment, just before mine did the exact thing. Why did the have to be so many consequences? It wasn't fair how much will power it took to stop me from kissing her.

"Something like a k–"

"Morgan, where are you?" Niall's voice boomed through the walls and windows of her bedroom causing us both to pull away immediately. I looked ahead of me to my bedroom and Morgan bent her head behind us to reply to her brothers call.

"I'm outside talking to Harry!" She yelled, shuffling further away from me with each word. I felt my heart drop a little but I wouldn't let that show or make me think differently, she was just doing what deep down we both knew was right.

"Oh hey bro," he greeted me, popping his head out of the window. I nodded towards him and he turned to Morgan, "Mom and dad are doing their night checks in like two minutes so you need to like, get in bed." He informed, waiting impatiently for her at the balcony door.

She sighed and turned to face me, "I better go then," she sent me a tight lipped smile, jumping onto the paved floor of her balcony, "See you tomorrow, Har." I watched her hug her arms around her torso and walk backwards towards her room.

I creased my eyebrows together, no hug? "Uh, y–yeah... Sure. My car at 8:15 right?" I stammered, turning my body 90 degrees to face her — I knew all of this shit would make stuff awkward. Fuck feelings.

"Yeah, as always," she chuckled, a fake one that I knew all too well, "Night." And with that she left into the bedroom, Niall closing and locking the door after her and sending me a small wave which I returned.

"Night." I muttered into thin air, jumping back to my house and locking up the balcony. Never had we gone away from each other on a night without a hug, not since we'd become friends.

I watched her from the window of my balcony door, my hand resting on the cool glass, frowning slightly at the way she angrily stomped around the room and shoved herself on the bed. Picking up my phone and placing the plate down on the windowsill, I tapped her an iMessage.

Harry (22:57)
u okay?

Morgan (22:58)
Yep, see you tomorrow(:

Harry (22:58)
ok, night. X

I locked my cell and brought my head up to focus back on her house. She had read the message, locked her phone and turned off the lights. I had never in my life wanted to take back what I'd done so much before.

And that's what made it so damn awkward. My almost kiss with one of my closest friends. Finishing up in the shower completely, I stepped out and tossed a towel loosely around my hips, flipping my hair out of my face as I brushed my teeth to give them a pearly white glow.

Waltzing out of the room and into my own, I began picking out an outfit with ease, tossing a pair of black pants and a black leather–look shirt onto my bed I shut the closet door and span around, catching something in the corner of my eye.

Once I'd took a second glance, I noticed Morgan staring at me with her jaw slightly ajar. I smirked, bringing the pads of my index finger and middle finger together and circling them around my pink nipples, knowing it would have her in a fit of giggles — and it did. I saw her pick up her phone and motion for me to do the same, so I did.

Morgan (08:09)
Sexy nipples babe;)

Harry (08:09)
yeah i know, don't be jealous.

Morgan (08:10)
Oh trust me, i'm not! hurry up and get your sexy nipples downstairs — we have school!-.-

I looked over to her and waved dismissively. She stuck her tongue out at me and disappeared out of sight. Just like that, everything was normal again, the way I loved it.

"I came in like a wreckingball! I never hit so hard in loveeee. All I wanted was to break your walls. All you ever did was, wreck me. Yeah you, you wrecked me!" Morgan sang loudly along to the Miley Cyrus tune that blasted from my car speakers. I couldn't help but laugh and be amazed at the same time — she was a great singer, and an entertaining person to watch perform.

"I put you high up in the sky and now you're not coming down. It slowly turned, you let me burn and now, we're ashes on the ground!" I sang, tapping my hands on the black steering wheel and seeing her smile in awe at me through the corner of my eye.

"You're amazing, Harry, you should be a professional." She insisted, excitedly curling her fingers inwards. I glanced over to her for a moment with a wide smile and shook my head dismissively.

"
Nah, I'm gonna' stick to my basketball," I shrugged, "But you, you should go for America Idol or something!" I nodded enthusiastically, pulling into the school parking lot and over to my usual parking spot.

"We live in the UK though..." Hannah trailed off, smirking as she pulled her bag onto her lap and slid out a slim hairbrush to run through her long light brown locks. I shut off the engine and watched her dab on some clear lipgloss which made her plump lips sparkle and look even more desirable.

"You finished yet, beauty queen?" I teased, grabbing my black backpack and leather jacket from the back seat. She rolled her eyes and pushed open the door. I smirked and did the same, leaning against the door and holding the bag in between my legs as I slid on my jacket.

"Don't we have gym first per–"

"Harrey!" A loud, piercing voice came out of nowhere. I cringed at both the tone of the voice and the name they'd chosen to use — Morgan did too. My eyes staggered across the schoolyard to find where the voice came from but I didn't manage to notice anyone nearby.

Suddenly, a pair of arms wrapped around my neck and a body pressed against mine with so much force that I actually leaned back a few inches. Awkwardly patting the back of the stranger, I opened my eyes slightly and noticed the bleach blonde hair and sickly–sweet smell that belonged to Jenn.

"Uh, hey, Jenn." I pushed her off me quite awkwardly, lifting my backpack strap onto my left shoulder as I looked around to see who had accompanied her — her two hot friends Nadine and Lillian. Then I noticed Liam, Zayn and Louis lazily making their way from Zayn's car toward us.

"How've you been? You didn't mail me back yesterday." She pouted slightly, a cheery look still evident in her eyes and in her posture. She was regarding to the small talk she was trying to make with me yesterday, I didn't reply because I didn't want to.

"Oh, that, yeah I was busy." I sucked my lips in as I noticed Liam smiling our way. Glancing over at Morgan, I noticed her glaring at Jenn with a look that said 'I want to kill you' or something similar to that.

"Stealing my girl, Styles?" Liam joked, smirking at me as he clapped hands with me and went to Jenn's side, wrapping his arm protectively around her waist. I chuckled and shook my head as conversation overtook them.

"Who are you?" Jenn snapped, too harshly for my liking, at Morgan who was standing innocently with her arms crossed loosely across her torso. Morgan seemed a little taken back by the sudden outburst and furrowed her eyebrows.

"I said who are you," Jenn repeated, "Like, why are you stood here like a loser listening to our conversation?" She scoffed. Morgan's eyebrows fell and she swallowed the lump in her throat — she was probably regretting sticking up for her now.

"Wait," I blurted out, stopping Morgan from walking away and everyone's attention turning on me, "That's Mor–"

"It's ok, Harry. I'll see you in class." Morgan nodded softly, sending me yet another tight lipped smile. I sighed in aggravation as she hurried off toward the main school building — once she was out of sight, I glared at Jenn as she played with her manicured nails. I noticed Liam, Zayn and Louis glaring at her too.

"Jenn," Liam scolded lowly, "That's Morgan Horan, she's cool — why'd you have to snap at her like that?" He shook his head, removing contact with her completely and joining my side instead where I sent him a thankful smile.

"Who cares if she's cool? She was just stood there like a loner trying to hang with us." Jenn scoffed, rolling her eyes back down to her nails. I pushed myself from the hood of my car, which I'd recently placed myself on, and frowned angrily.

"Actually she wasn't 'trying' to hang with us, she does hang with us — she's one of my closest friends and she means a hell of a lot to me so I suggest you learn to be nice to her." I stormed off looking for my Morgan, because she meant more to me than a perky cheerleader ever would.

Notes
