Our Place

Chapter Ten

Luke’s P.O.V.

I stare at them. They taunt me, in all different colors. Red, blue, orange, purple. They could end my, end this life, end my pain, and end my troubles. They could stop me from ever crying again. They could take me to another place, a better place, so I could be with my mother.

I slam the cabinet shut so the pills are out of view.

I’ve heard of suicidal people, and I’ve always thought it was incredibly dangerous and stupid. Why would anyone want to take their life away when they had such a future ahead? I couldn’t be a hypocrite. I couldn’t just go and kill myself. Niall did still care about me. He had explained, and as much as I had forgiven him, the fact that he had himself a girlfriend was shocking. Not because he wasn’t the kind of person the date, but because…

I wanted to be his girlfriend.

Hotshot barks softly, getting on two feet to reach my hands. He licks them and jumps up and down. I sigh and pick him up, hugging him tightly. Hotshot seems like the only one in this world who won’t ever turn on me.

I sink into the couch with Hotshot in my arms and try to remember what Niall had said to his mother, apparently about his girlfriend. The things he said were a bit horrible, so why would he still be dating a girl like her? She seemed a bit over the top for the Niall I knew. Then again, every person has their sides.

Despicable Me minions cackle from somewhere in my house, signaling a new message. I’m too lazy to get up and look for my phone, so I settle farther into the couch. Hotshot jumps off my body and heads out of the living room.

I wonder if she’s pretty. I wonder what she sounds like when she speaks. I wonder if she’s cooler and funnier and more normal than me. I wonder what made Niall want to be her boyfriend. She must be gorgeous. I bet her voice is intoxicating, and I bet he loves being around her. At least until now. The conversation Niall had with his mother gave me the impression that he hated his girlfriend.

I know I need to go apologize.

Niall’s P.O.V.

Fiona stares at me in disbelief. “What the hell?” she questions, her voice a scary smooth. She sounds like a snake. Her eyes flash green and I know I’ve pissed her off.

“Look, Fiona,”I sigh, walking away from her. I lean against the dresser and keep a steady gaze on her. “This, us, we are not working out.”

Fiona looks shocked. Her pretty face looks a bit red, and her hands are fisted together tightly.
“What do you mean, Ni?”

“We just aren’t right for each other. It was working out at first, but I feel like you made things get a bit out of hand.”

“Me?” she scoffs, throwing her hair back. “As if. The last thing I would want to do I ruin the relationship with the guy I’m in love with.”

“You’re not in love with me,” I say. Her eyes narrow and she walks towards me. “You’re in love with Niall Horan of One Direction. Not me.”

“Yes I am, cupcake,” she pouts. Her eyes are tearing up, but it doesn’t affect me. I don’t want to keep going on with her. I’m done. “Ni, please don’t do this. It’s not what you want.”

“Yes it is, Fiona,” I tell her sternly, holding her back with my hands on her shoulders. “You don’t love me, and I don’t love you. Not anymore. I’m sure somewhere in our relationship, our feelings were real, but they just aren’t anymore.”

Her lips hit mine like a ton of bricks. She forces me to kiss her back and her hands roam my lower region. I let out an involuntary moan. My body wants her, but my heart doesn’t. But today, my body seems dominant. She flips us around so she’s against the wall and I’m pinning her there, kissing the shit out of her. Her kisses are intoxicating, and not in the good way.

“You know you love me, Niall,” she purrs, playing with the hem of my tee. My lips kiss her bottom lip, and she pushed her hips into me. She moans and clenches me hair.

The door opens, and I jump away from Fiona to see Luke standing there like a deer in headlights.

“I-I I’ll come back later,” Luke coughs. Her beautiful green eyes and big and her lips are quivering. Oh shit.

“No wait, Luke!” I yell, pushing Fiona aside to run after Luke. I feel Fiona’s hand grab mine, her nails digging into the palm.

“Who was that, babe?” Fiona asks, retracting me to her body. Her nails trail lightly down my arm, making me shiver.

“Just a friend,” I frown, shaking Fiona’s hand off me.

“She seems like more,” Fiona says, kissing my neck. I squeeze me eyes shut, trying to resist the scary shivers I’m getting. “It seems like she has feelings for you.”

“She doesn’t,” I assure her, though I don’t care of assuring myself. Maybe I want Luke to have feelings for me. Fiona sighs and kisses me again.

What am I doing? I was breaking up with her ten minutes ago. Now here I am, letting her kiss me.

“Fiona, you need to leave.”

Her eyes widen and she crosses her arms over her chest. “Excuse me?”

“I said, you need to leave. We’re done. This can’t continue.”

“Why?” she smirks. “You liked it. You like touching me. You like my hands on you, making you moan. What’s not to like about me? You love me, and I love you. Let’s put all of this behind us.”

“Fiona. Get out. I don’t love you, and you don’t love me. You love my money. You love my fame. You love the attention you get from being with me. So get out of my room. Get out of my house. Now.”

“Niall, you don’t want to do that-“

“Or what? I’m just going to have to keep dealing with your shit and making you happy while I slowly bring myself to doom. You need a guy who is willing to deal with you. I’m not that guy.”

“This is because of that Luke girl, isn’t it?” she snarls, pushing me away by the chest.

“No. This is between you and I. I don’t know how many times I’ve said this already, but we are not right for each other.”

‘You know what, Ni?” Fiona squeaks, walking around me towards the door. “I’m just going to leave and give you some time to think about what you’re doing. Do you really want to throw away everything we have? Just think about it.” She walks out of the room. I sigh and remember that Luke must still be in the house. When I get to the bottom of the stairs, I pause at the sound of Fiona’s annoying voice.

“You ugly little slut,” Fiona hisses. “Look at you. Go lose some weight or something before you even think about touching my man.”

“I’m not fat.” Luke answers simply.

“Honestly, you think Niall cares about you? He told me just now that he couldn’t give a shit about you. He wants me in his life, and only me.”

“T-That’s not true.”

“Oh, you don’t know how right I am, Luke.” Fiona snarls. “And Luke? Really what kind of name is that? Are you lesbian or something? I guess it would make sense, since you’re definitely not pretty enough to be a girl.”

“Hi,” I step into the living room and both girls heads turn to me. Luke’s face is so pale, and she looks like shes about to burst into tears.

“Fiona,” I say, “I thought I told you to get the fuck out of my house. I thought I told you that we are done.”

“Sorry,” she shrugs innocently. “I was just trying to get to know your friend here. She seems very… interesting.”

“Get out.” I point towards the front door. Fiona rolls her eyes and pushes past me, exiting the house. Luke sighs and runs her fingers through her hair.

“Was she right?” she asks softly. “You don’t care?”

“Of course I do,” I frown, coming towards her. Surprisingly, she lets me wrap my arms around her.

“I came to apologize.” Luke says, pulling away. Her eyes dart around nervously. “I shouldn’t have jumped to conclusions so quick when I heard you and your mum speaking. I normally wouldn’t do that, but I’m just so hurt right now, and I don’t know exactly how to feel about anything.”

“I’m so sorry for ever making you feel like this,” I say, hugging her again. She nods and hugs me back.

“Niall?”

“Yeah?” I pull away just enough so I can see her beautiful green eyes. She sucks in a breath and stares back at me.

“Can I ask you a completely ridiculous question?”

“Sure,” I laugh, feeling better when Luke smiles.

“Did you break up with Fiona because of me?”

I stop laughing and my lips press into a thin line. I don’t know. Did I? Was it more than the fact that Fiona was so annoying? Was it maybe because I liked Luke? Did I even like Luke in the first place? I’d always thought of her as my friend, as a sister, but could it just be an excuse to myself that I liked her?

“I-I’m just w-wondering,” Luke stutters. “It’s not important. But if you did, just know that I’m not worth it.”

“I don’t know,” I breath out, suddenly becoming very aware of how close we are. My eyes flicker down to her lips. They look so incredibly soft, and plump and pink. Luke clears her throat and my eyes meet hers as I blush.

She is definitely worth it.

“Forget it,” Luke smiles weakly, pulling away. “It’s stupid.”

Silence takes over the room and Luke and I stand awkwardly in front of each other. She bites the inside of her cheek and heads to the door.

“I should get going,” she says softly. I nod and open the door for her.

“I’ll see you later,” I smile. “Tomorrow morning I suppose?”

“Maybe,” Luke smiles slyly and leaves my house. I watch as she sprints around the back, approaching the green trees of the woods.

I want her.

Luke’s P.O.V.

The next morning, I’m woken up from a message alert. I sleepy palm my hands on the night table, trying to find my phone. When I find it, I pick it up and open the new message.

From: Niall

Come a little late to our place today. Maybe about eleven. Don’t leave your house any earlier.

To: Niall

Why? What’s going on?

From: Niall

Can’t tell you! It’s a surprise ;)

To: Niall

Oh… okay.

I try to go back to sleep afterwards, but I can’t. Now all I can think about is why Niall doesn’t want me to go to the woods so early. I wonder what surprise me has in store for me. By the time it’s half an hour to eleven, I’m up and dressed, ready to find out what my surprise is.

When I approach the woods clearing, I squint when I see something hanging from the big tree. Is that a tire swing? No way. I had always dreamed of attaching one to the tree, but I had never found the time to do it.

“Do you like it?” Niall asks, poking his head out from behind the tree. He comes around with a huge grin on his face.

“Yes,” I gasp, nodding my head. “I love it.”

“I had a feeling you would.” He laughs. “Go on, give it a try.”

I walk forward and grabbed onto the ropes holding the swing up. I let my legs hand on the inside of the tired while my bottom rests on the flat surface of it. I laugh and swing around, letting the wind blow my hair back. Niall pushes the tire when it begins to stop spinning. This goes on for about ten minutes until Niall wants a go. We switch spots and he tries out the tire for himself.

An hour later were seated against the tree, talking about our problems. Niall tells me all about Fiona and how much he hates her. He explains how nice their relationship used to be until she started asking for money and clothes, and then he realized she was using him. I truly feel bad for him falling into a trap like that. Someone who has the guts to use someone as great as Niall like that needs to check their issues immediately.

“How many people have you dated?” he asks suddenly, making me look down. I don’t know why I’m blushing so hard, or why I feel so embarrassed. At least I’m not someone who has had one too many boyfriends.

“No one,” I shrug, my eyes pinned to the ground. I don’t want to see his reaction. He probably thinks I’m a pathetic wallflower now. Which is true.

“Good,” I hear him say instead, surprising me. “Because you deserve the perfect guy to love. You don’t deserve heartbreak, because you’re such an amazing person and it’s obvious that you need the best.”

I’m speechless at his words.

“Thank you.” I squeak, blinking at him a few times. I’m not sure exactly what that was, but I decide on friendly confession.

“Want to go down to the waterfall?” he asks. I can see his eyes are eager, so I nod and pull myself up. We begin our walk down to the waterfall.

“When we approach the clearing, I have to squint and widen my eyes several times to focus my vision on something that wasn’t near the area before.

“How the hell did all that food get there?” I yell when I realize what it is. I look over at Niall and see him grinning like a lunatic. He looks so proud of himself, and I can’t help but let his smile spread to my lips. I laugh and grab his hand, pulling him around the large pond to the blanket of food. Everything looks so amazing. There’s chicken wings dipped in barbeque sauce, sandwiches, a drink that looks like lemonade and cookies that smelled absolutely delicious.

“Did you make all this?” I ask, looking pat him. His mouth twists into a tiny smile and he nods.

“Which is why you shouldn’t be surprised if it tastes horrible.” He laughs, taking a seat on the blanket. I sit down beside him and grab a chicken wing.

“Why did you do this?” I wonder out loud, licking my lips at the amazing taste of the chicken.
“I just thought you might want to get away from the world for a while.” Niall smiles lightly and takes a bite of the sandwich.

“You read my mind.”

Niall smiles and me, glancing at me sideways, the turns fully so he’s facing me.

“You’re interesting, you know,” he tells me, keeping a steady gaze on my eyes. “You have that one personality that you had on the first day I met you, where you were ready to beat the crap out of me, and then you have that very loving, empathetic personality. You’re so unguarded and so naïve of what an amazing person you are. You have this weird sense of humor that only shows up every so often, but you’ve got this sarcasm that makes up for it. You don’t like being pushed around, and you blame yourself for other’s faults. You’re just as much a closed book as you are an open one, but the fact that I know so much about you in so little time proves just how much I care about you as a person. I get that you don’t really have friends in school, and your parents… erm, aren’t exactly around right now, and I sense the insecurity you have that I’m going to leave you too.”

“Stop,” I gulp, interrupting him. “Stop and just get to the point already.”

Niall’s jaws tighten and relax a few times.

“I just want you to know that I’m never going to leave you.”

“I know,” I laugh. “You’ve told me that one too many times.”

Niall just winks and pops the rest of his sandwich into his mouth.
