Little Steps

The Real Medicine

Niall’s P.O.V.

Everything was so blurry. But the smell, said everything. I was in a hospital. I always hated the smell, always hated hospitals. Bad things always happened to get you into a hospital.

My head was throbbing like crazy, pounding and pounding. There was something sticking out on my arm. I think it was an I.V.

Blurry. Everything was so blurry.

I squeezed my eyes shut tightly, and opened them again, and things were a bit clearer. I saw a small TV going on in the corner. Bags of liquid were hooked up to my body. I reached up to rub my eyes, and realized one of my hand were bandaged up like a rock.

What the hell?

How did this happen? Why am I even in a hospital? I couldn’t remember. I couldn’t recall. I couldn’t.

And then suddenly, I did remember.

I remembered the punching, and the kicking. I remember Aria screaming. The terror. My heart, beating faster and faster. I remember, carrying Aria, down the stairs, and then letting her go. I remember a gun pointed at my head, but how Liam saved me. And Aria…

Aria.

I sat up way too quick, and it was as if a huge piano had been dropped on my head. My heart beat picked up the pace, as I tried to get out of bed. I needed to find Aria. I was fine. I just needed Aria. I didn’t need all these bags of liquid. Aria was my medicine.

The machine, which tested my heart beat began beeping annoyingly loud. I wanted to take my overly bandaged up hand at throw a punch at it. Because as soon as it started going off, two nurses ran inside.

“Hey, ly back down, sweet heart.” One said, pressing me back onto the bed by my chest. No. I needed to find Aria.

“Where’s Aria?” I coughed. Damn. I sounded like a frog. I cleared my throat. “Where is she?”
The other nurse, a blonde, shot me a sympathetic look. “She’s absolutely fine.”

I narrowed my eyes at her. “Don’t nurses learn how to lie better somewhere in their eleven years of schooling?”

The blonde nurse blushed in return.

“Sweet heart, I need you to take a deep breath.” The brunette said slowly. “Can you do that?”
I grunted, but nodded. I took a few deep breaths, and the machine finally shut up.

“When can I go see her?” I asked.

“When you sir, are in top shape.”

I bit my lip. “And how long will that be?”

“Only two or three days, sweet heart.”

I took a deep breath and grabbed the blondes hand. She looked at me, shocked.

“Please,”’ I begged. “Tell me exactly what’s happened to her. If I can’t go see her, I just really need to know. I swear I won’t bother you ever again.”

The blonde shot the brunette a look, and the brunette slowly nodded back. Success.

“Luckily, she hasn’t got any broken bones. However, she does have a severe cup on her shoulder, which lost her a lot of blood. Other than that, it’s only a few smaller cuts that will heal easily under the right care.”

I nodded in reply.

“Thank you.”

The nurses smiled.

After that, the blonde one checked my blood pressure and did a few blood tests on me, then left me in the room. Just when I thought I was alone again, two very familiar adults stepped inside.

“Mum!”

She bit her lip, most likely to keep from crying and rushed towards me. She planted kisses all over my face, her tears falling onto my skin. When she pulled away, I saw who was next to her.

“Greg?”

“Hey, buddy.” He grinned, giving me a loose hug. “Noah’s here, too but they wouldn’t let him come in.”

Man.I wanted to see Noah.

“Mum,” I looked at her. “Mum, I am so sorry for not telling you earlier. I promise I will tell you everything-“

“It’s okay.” She said, cutting me off. “Liam already told me everything.”

“Liam’s awake?” I asked.

“Yeah. He wasn’t admitted to the hospital. He just needed to be checked for any injuries.”

Thank god he was okay.

Just then, there was a loud, and familiar cry coming from outside the room.

“Well,” Greg sighed. “I guess he can’t get enough of daddy.”

We all laughed.

“See you soon, okay Ni?”

I nodded. “See ya.” My mum and I watched as Greg left the room, then she took my hand.

“Niall, I just wanted you to know, that I’m not mad at you for doing this. What you did-“ she paused. “What you did last week was so amazing. To know that you would do anything for Aria just proves how much we should love her, the way you do. I just need you to know that I am so proud to call you my son.” My mum laughed to herself for a second. “And one day, I need to be calling Aria my daughter-in-law. Got it?”

I laughed, pecking my mum’s cheek. “Got it.”

Then I realized what she had just said. What I did last week?

“Mum, how long was I out for?”

She gulped. “A week.”

“Wow.” I gasped, then asked her, “is Aria doing okay?” Because I honestly didn’t believe the nurses.

She nodded, fortunately. “I actually talked to her a few minutes ago. She’s doing fine, just like you. In fact, you were out a little longer than she was.”

She was okay. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

“Hey mum, do you think I can get something to eat?”

She laughed.

“That’s my son.”

Aria’s P.O.V.

My left shoulder was killing me. It was bandaged up really tight, to the point where I couldn’t even move my arm. A nurse came in just about a second ago, and slowly questioned me on anything I remembered. I told her about my father, and everything he did. Just talking about him made m feel scared. That is, until the nurse told me he was dead.

I celebrated.

Like, I literally bounced up and down on the bed and hugged to nurse, squealing like crazy. I didn’t care. My father was dead.

And no. I wasn’t a terrible daughter. He was just a terrible father.

The nurse left me, and I wondered how Niall was. I remember seeing him fall over the stairs, and that was about it before I passed out.

A knock on the door interrupted my thoughts. I hoped it would be Maura again, because she was such an awesome person to talk to. I wish my mother had been like her.

Instead, Liam walked in.

“Aria!” he cheered, skipping over to me. He pressed a kiss to my forehead, but I still flinched. I flinched at every touch now. It was because of everything my father had done. I was scarred by his actions. “How are you?”

“I’m doing good, kind sir.” I giggled. “And you?”

“Just wonderful.” He grinned, hugging me around the waist. He kissed my head again and again until I pushed him away.

“What has gotten into you?”

He sighed. “I’m just so glad you’re okay.” He said, a truthful smile on his lips.

I frowned. “Did Niall kill my dad? Or was it the police?”

Liam’s eyes widened, and his Adam’s apple bobbed up and down.

“Uh, no. Niall did.”

I grinned. “Damn. I have to marry that guy.”

Liam laughed, squeezing my hand gently. “You really do need to marry him. It’s the least you can do.”

Liam and I talked for almost an hour, until a stupid nurse came in and kicked him out so she could check my blood pressure and other shit. All I really needed to be healed, was Niall. He was my medicine.

I wish the nurses knew that.

Liam’s P.O.V.

When Aria asked me who killed her dad, I couldn’t help but lie. It seemed stupid, but Niall deserved all the credit. I got knocked down within the first minute of fighting Aria’s dad, but Niall managed to stay up for at least fifteen minutes. Niall was the one who had the determination to get Aria back. For him to plan all of that, then go through with the plan, and in the end, not gain the respect for killing Aria’s dad, was wrong.

After half an hour of talking to Maura, I decided to head back to the hotel.

When I got to the hotel room, Harry’s face was pressed into a pillow, and he was sobbing .I don’t think he even noticed me come in.

“Harry?”

He looked up, alarmed. “What?”

“Harry, do you need to talk to me?”

“I just miss Amber.” He said quietly, sitting up in bed.

I sighed. “I know that. And no one can expect for you to get over her that quick, especially with what she did to help us find Aria. But just remember, that she wouldn’t want you crying over her.”

Harry nodded. “You’re right.”

“Duh.” I smirked .”I’m always right.”

Harry hesitated, then looked up at me. “How are things with Danielle going? Is the baby doing alright?”

I almost forgot I was going to be a father soon. The thought was just so new to me, and it hadn’t sunk in yet. I had been so consumed in worrying about Aria, that I hadn’t even bothered to contact Danielle. I needed to see how she was.

“Now that you mention it,” I said. “I need to call Danielle.”

“Tell her I said hi.” Harry replied before collapsing back onto the bed.

I stepped outside our room and dialed Danielle’s number. She picked up on the second ring.

“Hello?”

Her voice was so mesmerizing.

“Hi, Danielle. It’s me.”

“Oh. Hi, ‘me’.” She giggled, before going silent. “I called you earlier. You didn’t pick up.”

“I must’ve have been at the hospital.”

“Uh,” and heard Danielle clear her throat. “Why were you at a hospital?”

I snorted.

“Sit back and grab some popcorn or something. This is going to take a while.”

I told her the entire story, and afterward, she was speechless. I almost thought she had hung up, but then she finally replied.

Damn.”

I sighed, but quickly shook the thoughts away. “So, how is the baby doing?”

“She’s doing fine.” Danielle answered. “I just had an ultra sound two days ago.”

“I know.” I recalled. “Sorry I had to miss it, babe.”

“No, it’s okay.” Danielle said. “I understand completely.”

“Thank you.” I sighed in relief.

“Hey, Li, I need to go. Mum’s making dinner.”

“Alright. I love you.”

“I love you, too.” She giggled lightly. “Bye.”

I suddenly had a desire to be with Danielle again.
