Little Steps

Surprise, Surprise

Aria’s P.O.V.

When I woke up the next morning, I was in Niall’s shirt and my black boy shorts. Blushing, I looked over at Niall to see him still asleep. He looked like a baby when he slept, so I decided to take a picture. Reaching for my phone, I snapped a picture of Niall sleeping. Giggling quietly, I set my phone down and sunk back into my pillows, rubbing my eyes. That was when Niall slipped his arms around me, pulling me towards him.

“Good morning, princess.” He smiled, his eyes still closed. And oh my god. His morning voice.

“Morning, Ni.” I laughed, scrunching my nose up at the sound of my morning voice. I never really ever trusted it, but I didn’t care.

“What do you want to do today?” he asked, stroking my hair. I noticed that he played with my hair a lot. I wondered why, because my hair wasn’t really that soft in the first place. His eyes darted between mine, waiting for an answer.

“I don’t know what there is to do so I don’t know what I want to do.” I replied honestly, a hint of laughter in my voice.

“Then, I’m guessing you forgot.” He chuckled, sitting up. I stayed down, shooting him a questioning look.

“What? What did I forget?”

“Today is the Coldplay concert.” He informed slowly. A light bulb came to life in my head.

I slapped my forehead dramatically. “How could I forget? That’s like, the number one highlight of my life!”

Niall frowned. “I thought I was the number one highlight of your life.”

“Egotistic much?” I giggled, ruffling his hair. He shook my hand away, but managed not to glare. I would never stop ruffling his hair, just because he hated so much.

“Go get a shower, or whatever.” He grumbled playfully. “Just don’t touch me.”

“Touch.” I squeaked, poking his arm before pouncing off the bed, straight to the bathroom door. I peeked out to see Niall rolling his eyes and falling back onto the bed. What a fatty.

After taking a shower, I crept into Niall’s room and grabbed one of his shirts and my favorite white jean shorts. I could smell pancakes coming from the kitchen, so I quickly changed and stumbled through the flat, lured by the smell of pancakes. I think I went in circles or something, because I was starting to feel dizzy. Just when I was about to give up, I saw the stairs and grinned, shuffling downstairs. I went straight for the visible kitchen, and saw Niall’s back turned to the stove, piling pancakes onto a plate. He had showered as well, changed into what from the back looked like his grey v-neck and sweats.

I tiptoed towards him, and then at the last second, jumped onto his back. He yelped, stumbling back with my weight on him.

“Aria, what the hell?” he laughed, eyeing the stove. “I could’ve burned my hand.”

“Aww, sorry little prince.” I cooed, ruffling his blonde hair. He glared at me for a split second, then shooed me out of the kitchen. I sat down at the breakfast table, humming some random tune, waiting for my pancakes. Only minutes later, he came out of the kitchen holding a full plate of pancakes in his hands. He set the plate down in the idle of the table and stuck his tongue out at me. Then he went back into the kitchen and came out with a bottle of orange juice and two cups.

Once everything was set out, Niall totally forgot about the “ladies first” rule, and grabbed a pancake. I watched in amusement as he ate in hungrily, pausing for a moment to rate the taste, then nodded in satisfaction. I laughed and grabbed my own two or three pancakes, pouring syrup over the top.

“Niall, I have a confession to make.” I sighed as he shoved a forkful of pancake into his mouth. He did that little jerk with his head that guys do when they want to say “what’s up?”

“You have terrible table manners.”

He almost spit out his food while laughing, which made me confused. This wasn’t exactly funny.

“You care about table manners when you’re eating with me? Ari, this is your chance to eat like a pig. I don’t care. Cause frankly, I enjoy eating food.”

I shrugged and decided he was right, so I stuffed my mouth with pancake and made a little “mmm” sound, savoring the taste.

“That’s more like it.” Niall grinned, pausing to take a sip of his orange juice.

We spent most of our breakfast eating instead of talking, then migrated over to the couch to lazily talk over what we were going to do to kill time. After spending two hours thinking of things to do, Niall declared that half the day was gone already and we should just stay home.

We were in the middle of watching One Direction’s iCarly episode, when Niall received a text on his phone. I tried to read it and be nosey, but Niall put his finger to the tip of my nose and pushed me away. After reading the text, his eyes seemed to be brighter and he was smiling lightly.

“Change of plans. One of my friends want to meet up for lunch. They said to bring you along.”

I stared at him for a second, wondering whether I would go and change and I’d come out and he’d be there teasing me because I was gullible and that we weren’t really going to go anywhere, but then he got up too, switching the TV off and heading upstairs to his room. I followed him, and once we got to his room, grabbed a cute white and pink top and some dark blue jeans. While Niall went to the bathroom to change, I left my hair down and slipped my black converse on, spritzing on a bit of perfume and some lip gloss. Slipping my phone into my pocket, I waited on Niall’s bed for him to come out.

“You ready?” he asked, staring at me for a second as a smile spread across his face. I nodded. I followed him downstairs and out to his car. After opening the passenger side door for me to get in, he rounded the front and got into the driver’s seat.

“Where are we going?” I asked, watching as he looked down at his phone, lightly groaning when he shrugged.

“It’s a secret.”

I huffed, facing the window. “Isn’t everything?”

Niall chuckled, starting the car.

We had been driving for about forty minutes, when finally, Niall pulled up at an extremely fancy looking restaurant. Niall acted way too calm, strolling over to open my car door slower than ever, and taking several seconds to take his keys out of the ignition hole. He looked forced to be calm, as if he was a jumping bean on the inside.

“What’s wrong?” I asked as he took my hand and led me into the restaurant. He gave me a mysterious smile and told the waitress at the desk of his reserved seating. The waitress looked up from her computer and her eyes immediately widened at the sight of Niall. Mumbling words, she led us to a room where reserved seating or “party seating” was. The waitress opened the doors for us, but just before we went in, Niall got behind me and covered my eyes with his hands.

“Niall, I know you love food, but it can’t be this surprising.” I snorted, but let him lead me into the room with his hands still over my eyes.

“Surprise.” He whispered, taking his hands away. I almost passed out.

In front of me stood none other than the members of Coldplay.

“Hello, love.” Chris smiled, walking up to me. I couldn’t even respond. He wrapped his arms around me into a huge bear hug, then set me down. “What’s your name?”

“A-A-Aria.” I stammered, my eyes darting everywhere but his face. He chuckled, then let Guy take over.

“I’m Guy. Nice to meet you.” Guy grinned, holding out a hand. I shook it, blood rushing through my bloody. In my dreams of meeting Coldplay, I never thought I would be this nervous. Acting like an idiot was definitely not in my plan.

“Jonny Buckland,” the percussionist came forward, planting a kiss of each of my cheeks. Kill me now.

“Aria.” I mumbled again, my cheeks probably a very bright red. Jonny laughed and gave me a hug, equally big as Chris’.

The final member of Cold play came forward, waving like crazy. I giggled, watching as he acted just as stupid as I was.

“Will, the champion.” He winked, giving me a large hug. Did I ever mention that all these guys smelled fantastic?

“But, I was supposed to be going to a c-concert,” I stuttered, glancing at Niall. “N-not meeting you guys.”

Chris laughed. “Well, Niall here figured it would be a nice surprise for us to join you for some lunch, and we weren’t busy, so why not?”

“The tickets were fake,” Niall blushed. “But I had this planned instead."

I turned around and gave Niall the biggest hug I had in me. Chuckling quietly, he hugged me back, planting a small kiss on my lips.

“Thank you so much, NI.” I whispered before turning back to the guys.

“Enough with the mushy gushy love talk.” Chris said, clapping his hands to snap us back to attention.

“Time to get to know you, Aria.” Guy cheered, grabbing my hand and sitting me down in a seat at the table.

“Let’s start with twenty questions.”

Two hours later, our plates were empty, our stomachs were full, and Chris was laughing his head off at some lame joke Niall had just told him. Guy kept making weird faces at me. Not flirty face, but silly faces. These guys acted so young.

Jonny looked up from his phone, looking at the rest of his band members. “We gotta be at the recording booth in an hour.”

Will groaned and Chris and Guy made a pouty face.

“Well,” Will started, getting up from his seat. “It was nice meeting you, Aria.”

The four of them made a chorus of goodbyes, each of them giving me a hug. I don’t think Niall noticed, but Jonny threw a load of cash onto the table, probably wanting to pitch in on lunch. Will held his hand out and gave me a high-five, laughing before they left the room. Once the four of them were gone, I tackled Niall into another hug.

“You are the best.” I squealed, squeezing him tightly. He laughed, pulling away, setting his arms around my waist.

“Only the best for my princess.” He answered smoothly, capturing my lips in his.

When we got home, Niall crashed, sleeping for two hours straight. I stayed up, of course, thinking about my encounter with Coldplay. All my life, I doubted that I would ever meet them, and then suddenly, my own boyfriend has arranged for Coldplay and us to have lunch together?

It was so insane, yet one of my dreams. Coldplay had always been my number one idols in everything. A lot of people didn’t really like them but if you listened carefully enough, their songs had so much meaning.

My phone buzzed on the side table, causing Niall to jump up from his sleep.

“Shh, it’s just my phone.” I laughed quietly. “Go back to sleep.”

Niall smiled tiredly and settled back down as I grabbed my phone. Another text from ‘Mom’.

Mom: Once upon a time, a prince and a princess were ignoring the queen’s calls…

My eyes widened and I slammed my phone onto Niall’s chest, making his muscles jerk.

“Whaaaat?” he groaned, opening his eyes to look down at the phone on his chest.

“Just read it.” I whimpered, rubbing my temples. Niall read the message, and then looked at me in disbelief and back to the screen.

“We’re being spied on. How did anyone know about the prince and princess story? We were the only ones who knew.” he gasped, giving the phone back to me.

“I don’t know, Ni.” I replied, unable to breath normally. “Maybe it’s just a coincidence.”

But I doubted it.

“Maybe,” Niall said steadily. “I mean, there’s no way they could’ve heard us talking yesterday. I highly doubt it.”

“Niall, I’m scared.” I gulped, pulling the covers over my face. I heard him sigh, pulling them back down. He rolled onto top of me, supporting his weight by his hands on either side of my shoulders.

“I’ve got you, princess.” He whispered, leaning down. His lips tickled my ear, slowly moving down towards my lips. Lips brushing against mine, he then whispered, “Always.”

“Be honest,” I mumbled. “Do you think we’re safe?”

Niall laughed against my mouth. “No.” I didn’t see what was funny in any of this. I didn’t see why he was laughing. Maybe it was sarcasm.

Capturing my upper lip in his, he cleared my mind of all thoughts, of all my fear. His hand slipped between the bed sheets and my lower back, the other rubbing against my cheek. I could feel his heart beating fast against my chest, his tongue sliding into my mouth. Searching my mine to battle with, his tongue ran over my teeth, his grip around my waist becoming gentler. His lips left mine, making me pout internally.

“I need to tell you something.” He said, holding my waist and rolling over so I was on top of him.

“What is it?”

His Adam’s apple bobbed in his throat, and he looked away.

“Actually,” he decided, “never mind. It’s nothing important, anyways.”

I frowned, but noticed his expression was telling me not to push it, so instead I kissed his nose and whispered, “You can tell me anything.” Niall just shook his head, a signal for me to drop it.

“I want to take you somewhere tomorrow.” Niall said after a few minutes of silence.

“Where to?”

Niall gave me a look. “You really think I’d tell you? When it comes to me, everything is a surprise.”

I shrugged. “Worth a shot.”
