Little Steps

The Date

Aria’s P.O.V.

I had to admit, I was beyond nervous of my first date with Niall. He had pretty much avoided me the whole day, helping out around the house and well…avoiding me. I pretty much sat on the sofa playing games on my phone until about four o’clock. By now, everyone knew about Niall taking me out on a date, and they all were telling me I would be happy.

I dragged my feet into the extra guest room where I changed. Honestly, before I spent my day playing games on my phone, I had spent about an hour picking out what I would wear. I had chosen a crop top that read “Young, Wild and Free” on it, a patterned tank top to wear underneath, jean shorts, a “Come at Me Bro” snapback, my black converse, and some cute jewelry Eleanor had lent me back in Paris.

After I had taken a long, hot shower, and slipped into these clothes, I decided to keep my hair wavy so that it elegantly brought out my outfit. By the time I had finished getting read, it was five in the afternoon. Slipping my phone and sunglasses into my purse, I skipped over to Niall’s room and knocked on the door.

“Niall.” I called, knocking on his door annoyingly.

“What?” he yelled for the other side. I could hear the smirk in his voice.

“I’m ready to go.”

“Okay, love. I’ll be out in a second. Go wait downstairs.” He instructed. I shrugged to myself and shuffled downstairs, where Maura was at the table reading a magazine.

“Hello, Maura.” I sing-songed, giving her a perfect smile. She looked up at me.

“Well someone is definitely on the jumpy side today.” She laughed, setting down the magazine.

“Yeah, well, I’m kind of excited, you see.” I smirked, setting my purse down on the table. She only nodded, and then with a wink, went back to reading her magazine.

Shortly after, Niall came downstairs wearing beige chinos and a white and black tank top which read “Never Mind.” He was always wearing a snapback, only he rocked it much better than me. I smiled. I guess we were both in the mood for black and white today.

“Hey! We match.” Niall laughed as me made his way towards me.

“But you look better, for sure.” I blushed, taking him into a hug. Niall didn’t seem to care that his mom was right behind us, so I didn’t either.

“We should get going.” Niall grinned, grabbing my hand. I nodded eagerly and waved to Maura, following Niall out the door.

We stepped into his brother’s minivan, which had a comfy look about it.

“I never got the chance to say, but you look incredibly beautiful.” Niall said as he started the car.

I blushed. “Thanks. You look great as well.”

Niall smiled and kissed my cheek. But what I really needed were his lips on mine. I missed my chance when Niall backed out of the driveway and onto the road.

“So, where are we going?” I asked sweetly, trying to get a hint out of his mouth. Niall just rolled his eyes and shook his head.

We had been driving for at least an hour. Now, all I could see was hills. Green trees, and hills. No buildings, no nothing. Was Niall crazy?

“We’re here!” Niall grinned, stopping the van in the grass. I looked at him as if he were high.

“Niall, we’re in the middle of nowhere.”

He shrugged. “Yeah, I know.”

“Um, so this is planned?” I guessed, still not fully getting it.

Niall chuckled, pulling the key out of the keyhole. He then turned towards me and slid a finger under my chin so that our eyes met.

“Aria, I wanted our first date to be about us. You and I. No one else. No one to interrupt us. No paparazzi. Nothing. Just us. So, what’s better than here?”

I could feel happy tears welling up in my eyes as I stared at this amazing boy.

“Other first dates are so cliché. You know, going bowling, watching movies, going to fancy restaurants. So this one, needed to be unique. Because you’re unique. And well, I had to impress you by meeting your standards.” He laughed gently, “And your standards are pretty high.”

“Niall, you’re…you’re perfect. Oh my gosh. You’re so perfect.” I whispered, biting my trembling lip. No one had ever done anything so sweet for me in my life.

“No, Aria. You’re perfect.”

Niall smiled before stepping out of the van. I watched from the rearview mirror as he took out a large picnic basket and a picnic blanket. I got out of the van and helped him set out the blanket.
We set the food aside and sat down together on the blanket, the soft grass at our feet. This, this whole thing was so perfect. Was resting on his side, holding up with his elbow, while my head rested on his thighs, my legs bent.

“You know, I’ve always been that guy who can never find the perfect girl,” Niall began, stroking my hair softly, “but now, I feel like I’ve found that girl. And I’m staring right at her.”

I looked down, touched by his words.

“It’s not that I feel obligated to say this, but Niall, I really feel like…like you’re the one for me too. You kind of always seemed special since we first met in California.”

Niall grinned, taking a sip of his juice.

“I remember the first time I met you. Liam had just found you, and brought you to our hotel room. I remember opening that door and thinking ‘Man, she’s beautiful’. But I honestly thought One of the other guys would grab you first so I guess I just kept my distance.”

“Well, things turned out better than you thought, eh?” I giggled, taking his hand.

“Definitely.” Niall exhaled, leaning towards me.

The sun was starting the set, so the sky was a mixture of blue, purple, peach, and red. What a beautiful sight. I focused my attention back on Niall, whose lips were not so far away as they were before. I suddenly couldn’t wait any longer so I cupped his cheeks and brought his lips down to mine, kissing him with so much passion and intensity. He didn’t hesitate to kiss back, eventually picking me up so that I was sitting on his lap face him, with my legs wrapped around his waist. My arms fell arm his neck, which was slightly tilted up now that I was on his lap. His lips massaged gently against mine, and as cheesy as it sounds, there were sparks flying. I could feel the curved shape of his smile on his lips as we kissed. I was smiling as well, and I couldn’t stop. I took a second to catch my breath as Niall lower me down onto the blanket, rolling on top of me. He smirked before our lips met again. I went crazy when his hands went up to my hair, combing his fingers through it.

Ten minutes and a steamy make out session later, I was seated my Niall’s lap, the both of us smiling, breathlessly and full of joy.

“You are so amazing, Aria.” He said, still breathing heavily.

“You too, Niall.”

“Now, wouldn’t you be feeling a bit awkward making out in a public park with hundreds of visitors surrounding us?” he chuckled, pulling me into his chest. I shrugged, giggling a bit.

“Yeah, you got me.”

“I know.”

“Arrogant much?”

“A bit.” Niall laughed, pecking my lips again.

“I’m really happy I’ve got you and the boys now.” I said after some silence.

“And I’m really glad we met you. I can’t imagine where I’d be now without. I can’t even imagine my life without you anymore.”

“I can’t either. It’s pretty surprising. We’ve only known each other for two months, and you’ve already made such an impact in my life.”

“How’s that?” Niall smirked, caressing my arm with the back on his hand.

I blushed, my lips curving into a smile. “Well, you were the first guy I have ever genuinely liked.” I mumbled, kidding my face with my hands.

“Aww.” Niall chuckled, each of his hands taking one of my hands away from my eyes. He laced our fingers together, kissing my knuckles lightly.

“Niall?”

“Hmm?”

“What am I going to do for the rest of my life?”

He looked at me with a confused expression. “What do you mean?”

I sighed. “Well, I don’t think I can stay in Ireland forever. I can’t live with your mum. That isn’t right. I’m going to have to find a job, my own flat. I have no clue where to start, though. And I get scared too, you know. I still wonder whether my dad will find me again. Still, whatever happens, I can’t just live in your parents’ house forever.”

Niall nodded, resting on his side and reaching out to tuck my hair behind my ear. “Aria, I know that you’ve got a lot on your mind, and I would love to help you figure things out, but for now, just for tonight, can we forget all our troubles?” He pleaded, stroking my cheek. “Please?

“Okay.” I whispered, nodding with a smile.

We spent the rest of the night, talking about unsaid thoughts and concerns, stealing a few kisses once in a while. With Niall holding me in his warm arms, I didn’t feel the slightest bit cold from the wind blowing that night.

“Aria, look.” Niall shook my shoulder gently, pointing up at a sky. A shooting star crossed the black sky, a light in the shadows.

“Make a wish, babe.” He whispered, closing his eyes to make his own.

I wish I could keep Niall forever.
