Little Steps

Something Missing

My watched let out a small sound, indicating another hour had passed. I sighed, watching the firework show with Aria sitting happily beside me. She pointed up at the different fireworks and which ones she preferred over the ones she believed she'd seen too many times.

The wet grass we were sitting in was sure to be getting my pants a bit damp.

"Are you okay?" Aria's soft, angelic voice rang from beside me. I turned to her with an encouraging smile.

"Perfect. Why do you ask?"

"You're just a little bit quiet. That’s all." she shrugged, resting her head on my shoulder.

Truth was, I really wanted to kiss her again, but either we were interrupted or I became too chicken. It was kind of embarrassing to catch myself staring at her lips every two minutes, and to know that she saw me doing it as well. Aria shifted closer to me so that the sides of our bodies were touching. She grabbed my hand and intertwined our fingers together. I loved how perfectly our hands fit together.

"There was something missing about tonight." Aria began with a small smile, tapping her chin with her free hand. "What was missing?"

"I don't know," I chuckled, "What do you think?"

"Well I mean, we got our whole day together, ate a ton of food, walked around the Eiffel Tower, wentupthe Eiffel Tower, and now, we're sitting andwatchingfireworksinfrontof the Eiffel Tower, and the whole night is perfect, except, man, there’s just one thing missing."

"I've got no clue, love. But if you want to do anything, tell me." I answered, quite clueless as to what she was talking about.

"You're so stupid." Aria laughed, crushing her lips to mine.

I never realized how much I had longed for her lips on mine until theywereon mine. Turning sideways to make it more comfortable, I brought my lips back down to her, kissing her passionately. Her lips tasted of ice cream, which we had shared earlier in the day. The curved form of her lips against mine informed me that she was smiling. I quickly scooped her up and set her down on my lap. Her arms wrapped around my neck, pulling me back in.

Once the kiss broke, we were panting quietly, trying to catch our breaths.

"That is what was missing." Aria giggled, resting her head on my lap with her legs stretched out on the grass.

"Definitely."

"So, what do you want to talk about?" she asked, reaching up the twirl a few strand of my hair.

"To be honest, and if you don’t mind, I do want to know some about your past." I answered quietly.

Aria hesitated, then smiled up at me. "Okay. What do you want to know?"

"Anything."

Aria took a deep breath. "Well, like you know, my dad wasn't exactly the best dad. At all. When I was really little, my mom used to hide me from him, and as I got older, I realized that he would beat her. But that was before she left. I don't know where she went, or if she's even alive. But I been getting these mes- uh, I mean, I've been getting the feeling, that um, that shes not even alive anymore." Aria stumbled on her last words.

"And...what about your sister?"

I watched as Aria stiffened up, just at the thought of her sister. "Her name was Scarlett," she began, "and she used to be my only friend."

"You can tell me." I ushered quietly, stroking her blonde hair gently.

"We used to be so close. There was a twelve year difference, so she was really protective over me. I never really got to have that proper sister talk with her, you know, about guys, and school drama and stuff, because once my mom left, she went haywire. She started sneaking off to clubs when she was eighteen, just at the legal age. She hung out with people who were a bad influence. They got her to start smoking, and drinking. She turned from an innocent, angelic teenager, into a messed up, party girl with terrible manners." Aria wiped a tear away before it could slide down her cheek.

"That's terrible." I whispered, sitting her up on my lap so that the back of her head was reated on my chest.

"Then, one day, we find out that she'd been drunk driving and ended up in a car crash," Aria gulped, "and she was killed."

I couldn't say anything at that point. It probably hurt her to talk about these things, but I could tell this was information that she needed to let out. This past of hers, was weighing her down so much, and I could tell just from that pained look in her eyes.

"I'm mad at her, Niall. Both of them. All of them. I'm mad that my mother left us, that my sister, who could’ve controlled what was happening to her, left me too. And with him. I can't even call him my father anymore. It was hell, coming home every night scared and afraid of if he was going to beat me or not. Every night, I would cry myself to sleep. I had no one. I loved no one. I had no idea what it felt like to care about someone for half of my life. Everything about my life just sucked."

"But do you know what it's like to care, now?"

Aria smiled now, and even with her growing tear stains, she looked beautiful. “Of course I do. I care about all the boys. I care about Eleanor, and Danielle. I’m in a new family. But theres one person who I care about most, and that’s gotta be you, Niall.” Aria said seriously.
I couldn't help but grin at her words, but I quickly contained it with a more normal smile.

"I care about you too, Aria. I'm not going to lie, I get worried about you. I worry that you're going to let your old life get the better of you. I worry that you are going to live your life with the pain you don't deserve. And most of all, I worry that you're going to date and give your heart, to a guy who isn't me." I blurted the last part with a sheepish grin.

“Well, I don’t plan on it, so you can chill.” Aria laughed, pulling herself up and sitting back down beside me.

“So, you want to go on a proper date sometime?” I asked hesitantly, hoping she wouldn’t reject me.

“Sure. Though I would consider this, right here, a pretty proper first date.” She shrugged, her blues eyes locking with mine.

“Okay. Fine, a second proper date?” I questioned, elbowing her lightly. Aria grinned.

“Of course, Nialler.”

“Perfect. I’ve got something fun planned.” I sang, totally lying now. I had nothing planned.

But for our second first date, I would try as hard as I could to make it the best date ever.

Aria’s P.O.V.

Throughout the rest of the night, we talked about everything and nothing, sneaking a few kisses once in a while. Once Niall noticed I was falling asleep in the soft grass, I felt him picking me up, phoning the taxi to come take us home.

Once we entered the house, Liam and Zayn were sitting at the dining table, little souvenirs spread out everywhere.

“I take it you both had a good time?” Liam said, looking up at Niall and I. Niall smirked, resting his head on my shoulder.

“Of course.” Niall replied, shooting me a wink before heading towards his room. Zayn looked up, and for the first time in all the days I’d spent with them, he was wearing glasses. And he looked hot.

“Hey Ari.” He mumbled, looking closely at some on the printing on a small key tag.

“Hey Zayn. Watcha doing?”

“Trying to figure out what this stupid key tag says.” He grumbled back, causing me to giggle.

“You guys are so weird.” I paused. “Where are Louis and Harry?”

Liam looked up at this question, a small smirk on his face. “Louis is in one the the bedrooms. He left Harry at the club.”

“Wait, club? Wow, they would go to a club.” I snorted, “Sleep time for me. Night boys!”

“Night!” they called back in unison. I stepped into the room that Niall had entered earlier, to see him lying on the bed with only his boxers on.

“Hey, Ari.” He smiled, patting the spot in bed next to him. “C’mere.”

I smiled and happily skipped to the bed, jumping in beside him. He slid him arm under my waist and pulled me into his side, pressing his lips to my forehead.

“If I were a superhero, guess what my name would be.” He said, suddenly. I smiled and thought for a moment.

“Superman? Batman?”

Niall shook his head. “Yourman.”

"Cheesyhead."
