Chapter 54

The past weeks have been nothing shy of incredible. I somehow managed to accept Harry’s past, even though it had obviously upset me a few times. Once I finally decided it was best to not dwell on past and live in the present, I seemed to breathe much easier.

School seemed to become more challenging, but having Harry around eased the stress of it all. Whenever we had the chance, Harry and I were always together either alone or with our friends. We managed to keep our alone time and hanging our with our friends balanced, and it was working perfectly. I’ve become much closer with Harry’s friends and it feels like I’ve known them my whole life. Harry and I had only had a few minor arguments since the weekend I met his father, and it was only because we either couldn’t agree on which movie to watch or where we waned to eat when he took me out. That was the only fighting we did, and I was completely okay with it.

I woke up peacefully as the birds chirped just outside my window and Harry’s arm draped over my waist. My dad had to go to London for a business trip, so Harry stayed the night. One of my favorite things in the world was waking up to Harry.

I turned over to my other side to see if my boyfriend is awake. However, when I saw him, he was already watching me with a content look on his face. “Were you watching me sleep? Creep.” I teased and giggled before pressing my lips to his bare shoulder. “How long have you been awake?”

His green eyes looked pained or something, and I tried to think if I had said something to make him upset. He took a deep breath before removing his hand from my hip and brushing his knuckles across my cheek. “I don’t want to lose you, Adelaide.”

“You’re not going to,” I told him confidently although I didn’t know why he’d say something like that. “I’m not going anywhere Harry.” I promised and sat up when his expression didn’t change. What’s going on?

“Harry, what’s wrong? Why would you say that?” I asked calmly as he sat up and faced me. I decided his expression wasn’t pain, but I couldn’t tell what else he was feeling. He ignored my question and moved his hand to my face to push back a tendril of my brown hair behind my ear before caressing my face tenderly. “What?” I whispered with a frown.

“Marry me.” He replied just as quiet as I had been.

A laugh of relief escaped my throat when I realized nothing was wrong. “God Harry, you scared me.” I held a hand to my chest as I laughed. “I thought you were going to break up with me or something. You got me.”

“Seriously, Addie.” He kept his hand on my face and his determined expression remained. Oh. He wasn’t joking.

“What?” My breath hitched as my throat began to close. Did he seriously just ask me to marry him?

“Marry me,” He said louder this time, and I felt my body freeze up.

I shook my head in disbelief and confusion. “Harry. . .”

“Why not?” He took my reaction as a no. His face was still serious, and I couldn’t even think straight. It wasn’t that I didn’t ever fantasize about marrying Harry and starting a life with him, but this all came as a shock. Heck, I’m 17 and still in high school.

“Harry, we’re so young. . . and we’re still in school.” I sighed. “And maybe because we’ve only known each other since August?” I laughed, hoping to ease the furrow of his brow.

“I don’t care, I love you Addie.” He argued against my reasoning.

“Harry. . . People don’t get married when they’re 17 and 18. That’s just crazy, besides, we have our whole lives. Why now?”

“We’re not like everyone else, who cares how old we are. I love you and I want to be with you forever. That’s all that matters.” He countered and brushed his thumb over my cheek mindlessly. “I’m serious, Addie. I want to marry you.”

“I know you are,” I sighed and let myself fall back onto the pillows. Even though I just woke up, I already feel exhausted. I didn’t know how to reply to Harry who was being quite persistent on the topic. It surprised me that he even asked, but I can’t deny my excited, racing heart. I was pleasantly surprised with his desire to move our relationship forward, but it’s crazy to take that big step at this age and stage in our lives. There’s no doubt that I love Harry and want to be with him forever, but I think it’s bizarre to get married right now.

“So say yes, make me the happiest guy on this planet.” He said and shifted so he was hovering over me, looking deep into my eyes as he waited for my answer. “I love you so much Addie, I’ll love you forever.”

“I will always love you too, Harry.” I offered him a small smile and ran my hands through his hair.

“Then why can’t forever start now?”

“Now? Harry, we haven’t even graduated high school!”

“Addie, that doesn’t matter. We can still go to school and graduate, you’d just have to write Addie Styles on your homework.” He smiled and leaned down to press a quick kiss to my lips. “I like that, Adelaide Marie Styles. . . Mrs. Styles.” He whispered in my ear. Ugh, I like that too, but this is insane.

“Harry, I-“

“Just think about it? You don’t have to give me an answer now, but at least consider it?” He asked and I couldn’t break his heart more so I just nodded. I felt the his hot breath on my face as he exhaled a sigh of relief. I suppose he was content that I was even considering it. “I love you Addie, I just want to have you forever.” Harry explained to me before attaching his lips to mine.

“Hey babe, what are you thinking?” Harry came up behind me at my locker and kissed my cheek.

“I need more time, Harry.” I sighed and grabbed my lunch.

Ever since Harry’s informal proposal a few days ago, the first thing Harry asks me when we see each other is if I’d made my decision. I keep telling him I need more time, and I’m glad that he accepts that. I really don’t know what I’ll tell him, but I know the decision will be hard to make regardless of what I choose.

“Okay,” he nodded, and even though I know he really wants me to say yes, I know he’s just glad I’m still considering it. I’m honestly surprised he’s still persistent about it. The morning he asked me, I had thought he was just having one of those days. I really admired it though, even though I couldn’t give him an answer, I loved seeing him still have the desire to devote his whole life with me.

“Let’s go to lunch,” He nodded towards the cafeteria and grabbed my hand.

“Addie?”

I stopped when I heard the voice that I had trying to avoid for the past month. “Hi Alicia.” I said and continued to walk with Harry.

“Wait, can we talk?”

I looked up at Harry as if to ask him for help, but he gave me a look like he thought it was a bad idea to talk to her.

“Please, Addie. Just five minutes, that’s all.” She pleaded. I suppose five minutes can’t hurt. It’s not like she can change my mind. There’s no way we can go back to being friends after everything exploded with Max. She knew about it all, but never told me. I know Max is her best friend, but she shouldn’t have kept me in the dark.

“Five minutes.” I reminded her and she eagerly nodded. “I’ll meet you in a few minutes.” I told Harry and kissed him before walked towards my old friend.

“Alicia, before you start making excuses just know that I can’t forgive you. You were my best friend and you never told me what Max was trying to do to Harry and I. I trusted you and I told you everything but you couldn’t seem to do the same.” I told her confidently. As harsh as it may sound though, it was the truth.

“I understand Addie, but I need to apologize and at least explain myself. You deserve that. I know I was a shitty friend, but you need to understand there was a reason why I didn’t tell you. Please let me explain.”

“Go for it.” I prompted and leaned against the wall of lockers as she began her side of the story.

“Alright,” Alicia took a deep breathe and looked down at her hands before beginning. “Well before we became friends, Max had already kind of been planning on getting close to you because he saw you with Harry a few times. He didn’t tell me for a couple of months, but when I found out I told him he needed to either stay away from you or tell you the truth. I told him if he didn’t do either of those things, I would tell you myself. He got really angry with me and let’s just say I didn’t have the option of telling you. I was upset that you would continue to be betrayed by him, but I knew you’d be okay because I also knew you loved Harry too much to let Max’s plan work out. I knew Harry wouldn’t let anything happen either.” She explained, and I didn’t know what to think at that point. Thankfully she began speaking again so I didn’t have to.

“Look, I know you feel betrayed by me just as much as you do Max, but I was in a tough position. I’ll always hate myself for not telling you myself, but when you were still in the dark about it all, it made me breathe easier knowing that Max would never succeed. Addie. . . Harry loved you from day one, and I knew he wouldn’t let Max steal you from him. I mean, he almost killed Max at that one party the week after you had moved here just because he took you there! God, you’ll never understand how sorry I am, but I will live with this forever. You’re my best friend Addie, and I’m so sorry.”

A tear fell from her cheek and I’m pretty sure I had let mine spill too. I was speechless at that point, and all I could do was pull her into a hug. I’m not sure what she said to change my mind, but I knew after her speech that I had been angry with her for all of the wrong reasons. I obviously experienced how nasty Max can be, so it didn’t shock me that he had forced Alicia not to tell me. I wondered what he did to her, but right now I just needed my friend back.

“I’m sorry, Ads.” She sobbed onto my shoulder.

“I know, me too.” I told her and pulled back from our embrace. “Can we just forget about it? Move on?” I offered.

“Please,” She weakly laughed and pulled me back into her arms. “I’m really happy you and Harry are still together.” She sighed and I told her I am too. It felt good to have my friend back.

“Let’s go eat.” I smiled and wiped off the smudged mascara on her cheek. She nodded and we linked arms as we walked to the cafeteria.

Harry’s face was priceless when he saw Alicia and I walking together towards him. We giggled as we sat down, and even though everyone was confused at our sudden reconciliation, it felt great to have Alicia back as my best friend.

“So I take it you two made up?” Harry whispered to me.

“Yep,” I smiled. “Oh! Do you remember that one Saturday morning when you came to my house and asked for math help? It was the night after that party. . . Probably like two weeks after I moved here.”

“Uh, vaguely. . . Why?”

“Did you have a black eye from fighting with Max?”

“Oh, I forgot about that.” He laughed. “Yeah. He told me I didn't have a chance with you. Asshole.” Harry muttered and shook his head with a smile on his face. “Why did you bring that up?”

“Because I love you,” I smiled and leaned over to kiss him. I know he was still a little confused, but he kissed back without hesitation.

I had gotten over it, but I hand’t forgot about Harry telling me why he first pursued me. I remember wondering when Harry actually starting liking me, and I guess I just found my answer. I hadn’t known Harry for two weeks and he had already beat someone up over me.

“So will you marry me?” He whispered into my ear; the question and the way his breath hit my ear sent a cool shiver through my body.

“Harry,” I warned and glanced at everyone around us even though a smile played on my lips. I definitely didn’t want a rumor to spread, and if anyone had just heard what Harry asked me, we’d be the topic of all conversations for a week.

“So?” He ignored my warning and I sighed. If these last few days have made me realize anything it is that I want to marry him, but I’m still a typical girl and can’t make up my mind. There’s so much to think about, and I just ca’t make that decision yet.

“Give me until New Year’s.”

“That’s two weeks. . .” He groaned, but I shot him a pleading look. “Okay, fine.” He smiled and kissed me deeply. “January first. . . That’s a good day to get married.” He smirked against my lips.

“Harry! I meant give me until then to give you my answer!”

“I know, I know.” He chuckled. “But seriously Addie, even though I want nothing more than for you to be my wife, we’re still going to be together no matter what you decide. These past months with you have been the best of my life. I love you so much.”

My heart swelled as I continued to fall deeper in love with this man. “I love you, Harry.” I smiled, and just as I leaned forward to kiss him again, Harry was hit in the face with a carrot.

“What the fuck, asshole?” Harry seethed at Louis, the one guilty of throwing the food.

“If you two kiss one more time, I think we’re all going to throw up our lunches Get a room, lovebirds.” Louis teased and I couldn’t hide my embarrassment so I buried my face in Harry’s chest.

“Oh no,” Harry smiled and took my face in hands. “They’re not the boss of us.” He winked and closed the gap between us to passionately kiss me in front of our friends.
