Just a Fool

Chapter 9: For a Minute I Thought the World Was Ours

The rest of the week was rather uneventful. Harry and Abigail continued to talk, more and more each day. Like a moth to a flame, Abigail was drawn to him. His deep voice was so calming, she found herself wishing he would keep talking about anything just so she could lose herself in his voice. Then she started to notice he was a complete gentleman, he never asked her anything inappropriate and he genuinely listened to everything she told him. She noticed whenever he was deep in thought he would play with his lip ring and his green eyes would narrow almost as if whatever that was on his mind was plaguing him. Then he would smile and she could feel her stomach flip. His smile was one she loved seeing every day, when he grinned the tattoos and piercings didn't matter. She saw him for the man he truly was and she was grateful he let her see that side of him.

Even when Harry was trying to concentrate on his work he would always glance over at her, her head tilted to the side, hair brushed over one shoulder leaving her neck exposed. One thing Harry liked about her was she didn't try to impress him, everything she did he found adorable. The way she covered her mouth when she laughed at one of his stupid jokes. How she would doodle on her journal and the corners of her notes. When she got really excited for something her blue eyes would almost sparkle. Her eyes gave everything away, if she was sad, happy, anything. He could always tell what she was feeling from one simple look.

After school on Friday Harry was in the parking lot when he noticed her heading to her car with her friends. Kristin was talking while Abigail was laughing and Charlotte was just shaking her head. His focus was on her until he heard someone clear their throat. “Mate, stare at her anymore and people are going to think you're a stalker.” Zayn chuckled.

Rolling his eyes Harry leaned on his car. “I never thought I would see the day,” Zayn started crossing his arms. “You actually liking a girl.”

“If you're going to bust my balls...” Harry mumbled stepping forward.

“No, I'm not, I'm actually kind of glad.” Zayn explained. “For one I know you're not a total twat, another I know things haven't always been easy for you.” Harry cringed. “You deserve someone like her, someone who actually knows you. I know you two are still trying to figure things out but I can see the way you look at her. And from what I heard she likes you just as much.”

“Thanks man,” Harry smiled.

“No problem, not enough of this pussy shit, lets get out of here.” He laughed slapping his friend on the shoulder.

Getting ready for the party was a sacred time for Kristin and she was busy making sure her friends felt the same way. She insisted they came to her house also she was doing their makeup. “I don't know how I feel about this,” Charlotte mumbled taking her glasses off.

“Just relax, its for one night,” Abigail reassured her as they walked to their friend's house.

By the time they reached the door it was already open with Kristin waiting on them. “Its about time! Now come on, we only have two hours to prepare!”

In those two hours there were lots of complaints from Charlotte who was told she had to give up her glasses for the night and wear her contacts which she had hated since she got them.

“No one will be able to see your eye makeup if you wear them!” Kristin reasoned.

Finally giving up Charlotte tossed them in her bag and put in her contacts. “You happy?” She asked, her brown eyes glaring at the red head.

“Ecstatic, now hold still.” Kristin instructed.

Abigail was curling her hair when she started to feel nervous. What if her friendship with Harry was just in class? What if he was with a girl at the party? She had no right to feel jealous but the thought of seeing him with someone else was eating her alive. Finally she was starting to develop feelings for someone, she didn't want it to end before it even started.

“Ab, you ok?” Charlotte asked, one eye open while the other was closed for Kristin to apply the eye shadow.

“Yeah, I'm fine, just thinking.”

“About Harry?”

Abigail blushed. “Maybe, I like him but I'm probably not his type or just...what if something goes wrong?”

“It won't, don't think like that.” Kristin told her. “Plus you'll never know until you put yourself out there. That's why we're going tonight. You are going to look amazing and Harry will have to make a move.”

Abigail smiled, nodding her head. “I'm trusting you, Kris.”

“Those are some scary words.” Charlotte mumbled.
In a house across town Harry was struggling to find clean clothes to wear to the party. “Harry! You done yet?” He heard Niall yell from the living room.

Rolling his eyes Harry picked up a white T-shirt off the floor. Sniffing it he shrugged. “That's as good as its going to get.” He sighed pulling it on. Grabbing his jacket, he slipped on his boots and left his bedroom.

Walking into the living room to see Louis and Zayn taking pre-party shots, Niall raiding the fridge, and Liam typing on his phone. “Its about time.” Louis laughed already a little buzzed.

Ignoring him Harry asked. “Who's driving?”

“I have to leave early, I got work in the morning so I'll drive my car and those two obviously can't.” Liam explained glancing over at Louis and Zayn.

“I'll drive,” Harry volunteered, grabbing his keys. “Come on, I'll follow you.”

Now that she was walking down the sidewalk Abigail wished she hadn't listened to Kristin. “Why couldn't I wear tights again?” She asked, her voice shaking. The cold air hitting her bare legs making her shiver.

“Because you have awesome legs and you never show them off.” Kristin grinned, unzipping her leather jacket just enough to show off her top.

Charlotte sighed, trying to keep her balance with the wedges she was given. “Isn't Ben supposed to be meeting us?”

“Yeah, he text me saying he was already there.” She explained fluffing her hair as they approached the house.

When she spotted her boyfriend she hurried over as fast as her five foot inch heels would take her. “Hey baby!” Kristin beamed but Ben seemed to be shocked.

“What the hell are you wearing?” He questioned looking over her white bra-let and high waisted skirt.

“Excuse me?”

“Here we go,” Charlotte mumbled.

Half an hour later Kristin refused to speak to Ben who was desperately trying to reason with her, Charlotte had actually started to loosen up, and Abigail feared Harry had ditched the party altogether. She had walked around, room to room, looking for the curly haired boy but no sign of him. Wishing she could leave she went outside to the pool. Even though it was cold, she didn't feel it like before. In that moment she just felt disappointed, she was so excited for this night and now she just wanted it to end.

By the end of the ride to Vanessa's house Harry was ready to toss Louis out of the car. He was a very hyper drunk and being in a car was not good for him and the ones around him. Walking into the party he didn't see Abigail but he saw her friend Charlotte grinding with some guy in the middle of the living room. “Well if you would excuse me boys,” Niall smirked walking over to the dark haired girl.

Shaking his head Harry made his way through the house, his friends following close behind.
“Harry, Philip is here.” Liam told him.

Glancing through the crowd of people he spotted the preppy boy surrounded by his football buddies. He was still sporting a black eye from their fight. Harry heard Zayn laugh from behind. “Damn, Harry maybe you should hit him a little harder next time.”

“Like there's gonna be a next time. He's too scared.” Harry smirked noticing the way Philip went from confident to frightened when he noticed Harry staring him down.

“Hey, isn't that Abby's friend Kristin?” Liam asked pointing to a red head across the room.

“Yeah, and Ben is following her around like a lost puppy.” Harry noted. “Lets not disturb them, come on.”

Outside he immediately spotted a blonde girl sitting on a lawn chair. He had to do a double take when he saw her. Usually Abigail's style was modest now here she was in a strapless top and a skirt that gave him a good look at her long legs. And from where he stood he could tell she was freezing. Stripping his jacket off he walked up behind her placing it over her shoulders. “Are we going to make this a thing?” He smirked taking a seat beside her.

“Oh hey, I thought you changed your mind about coming.” She smiled.

“Nah, just decided to be fashionably late.” He laughed. “So...what are you wearing?” He didn't mean for his voice to be harsh but the way her face fell made him cringe.

“Um...it was Kristin's idea. I guess to get me out of my comfort zone.” Lowering her gaze she felt embarrassed, she couldn't even look at him.

Leaning forward he gently lifted her head so he could look into her eyes. “You don't need all of this. Its not you, Angel.”

Frowning, she nodded. “You're right. I just wanted...” Trailing off she sunk into the jacket, Harry's scent calming her.

“What...?” Hearing his name being shouted he saw Philip stalking over to them with his friends. “Shit.”

He could sense the cockiness from Philip as he approached him. A few drinks and some ego boosting gave him a new wave of confidence. “What do we have here?”

Standing up, he put his hands in his pockets. “What do you want, Rogers?”

“Just wanted to make sure you weren't taking advantage this poor girl who clearly doesn't know what you're about.” Philip smirked glancing at Abigail who stood next to Harry.

Stepping in front of her Harry's eyes darkened. “Leave her alone.”

“I think I should be telling you that.”

Harry was about to lose it. Not only did Philip all of a sudden develop a set of balls but now he was trying to test Harry by talking about Abigail. Clenching his fists he took a step forward but a small hand on his forearm stopped him. “Harry, don't. He's not worth it.” Abby whispered.

Just like in the hallway he felt his anger drift away. Grabbing Abigail's hand he snarled. “You're lucky.”

Hearing Philip and his friends laugh made him clench his teeth but Harry kept walking. Around front he noticed his own friends, Liam helping Niall carry Louis to his car while Zayn stumbled behind them. “Are they ok?” Abigail asked.

“They won't be tomorrow, where are your friends?”

Before she could answer they heard a girl cheer from behind them. Abigail was shocked to see Charlotte jogging to them, carrying her shoes in her hands. “Abby! There you are!” She slurred. “I'm having so much fun.”

“I can tell,” Abby laughed. “Where's Kristin?”

Charlotte placed a shoe covered hand to her chin. “I don't know...” She mumbled. “There she is!” She exclaimed pointing to the end of the driveway where Kristin stood with Ben.

“What happened with them?” Harry questioned.

“He made a comment about Kristin's outfit.” Abby sighed.

“That's a big no no to Kris.” Charlotte giggled.

“Ok, its someone's bedtime.” Abby said gently grabbing Charlotte's arm, Harry grabbing the other. “She's never even had a taste of alcohol.”

As they began to carefully make their way down the driveway Kristin noticed them. “Oh my gosh, is she drunk?”

“Just a little bit,” Harry answered. “Did you drive here?”

“Yeah, we got her,” She muttered wrapping one of Charlotte's arms around her shoulder.

“Help me out here, Ben.”

Grateful his girlfriend was finally talking to him Ben nodded, wrapping the girl's arm around his neck. Very slowly they started walking. Watching them slowly away Harry turned to Abigail. “So uh...can I give you a ride home?”

“Um...I kind of rode with them.”

“Gotcha well...” He didn't know how to start this and for the first time in a long time Harry felt nervous. “Uh, the fall carnival is next weekend. Would you maybe...want to go with me?”

Smiling Abigail nodded. “I would love to.”

“Great!” Coughing Harry regained his composure. “Well in that case, can I have your number?”

Nodding again she took his phone as he handed it to her. Hitting send she grinned. “Now I have your's as well.”

“All right, well I'll text you, ok?”

“Ok.” She told him as she took a step back. “Oh wait, your jacket.”

“No,” He stopped her before she could take it off. “You keep it, it looks better on you anyway. You can always give it back later.”

“Ok,” She repeated, hoping he didn't notice her blush. “I'll see you later, Harry.”

Giving her a small wave he watched her walk away, his jacket still slung over her shoulders. Inside he felt a burst of pride, also he absolutely couldn't wait for his first official date with the girl that had taken over his thoughts ever since he started talking to her.
