Just a Fool

Chapter 3: Going Nowhere

Cheers and applause were heard as Harry and Philip stood chest to chest. Philip slightly taller but it didn't seem to affect Harry. Feeling slaps on the shoulder they turned their attention to their referee for the night. Craig stepped back, “All right, you know the rules, no weapons, if I feel like its going too far I'll call it off and decide the winner. You win by either knockout, submission, or by crowd decision. Got it?”
“Got it,” Philip coughed, wiping his hands on his jeans.
Nodding his head once Harry had an amused gleam in his eye. Usually his opponents were fierce, ready to fight and win at whatever cost. Philip looked like a scared puppy, at one point he could see his hands shaking. Since he had wanted this fight for so long Harry thought he would at least try to look intimidating but actually being in the circle was a different thing than just seeing it. Well if he wanted a fight he was going to get one.
Abigail stood on the side, her eyes on Harry. She would think he would feel nervous or a little bit of apprehension but he looked thrilled to be fighting someone. “Lets go boys!” Craig yelled stepping back to let the fight begin.
Philip squared up, his face was focused and determined while Harry just looked like he was ready to start laughing. They walked in a small circle, waiting for the other to make the first move. Deciding to let him have it Harry dropped his hands. Philip's fist connected with Harry's jaw making his head swing to the side. “What the hell is he doing?” Kristin asked.
“Just hang on, Harry usually lets them think they have a chance.” Ben explained, the cheers from the crowd becoming louder.
Turning her attention back into the circle Abigail watched Harry wipe his mouth. Now he looked serious. “You had your chance, man.” He smirked, his teeth stained with blood.
Before she could even blink Abigail watched in horror seeing Harry attack Philip bringing them both to the ground. People pushed Abigail away from Kristin as they tried to make their way to the front to watch the mayhem. Bodies kept hitting her making her sway from side to side. She could hear cheers and then a voice yell. “And Styles is the winner! Still undefeated!” The announcement only made people cheer louder.
“Abby! There you are! Way to give me a heart attack!” Kristin exclaimed grabbing her hand. “Come, on the fight's over.”
Still feeling shaken up Abigail let her friend pull her to the front of the crowd where she noticed Harry walking towards them, blood dripping down his chin. “What did you think, Angel?”
“A bit vicious, don't you think?” She breathed looking past him to see two guys helping Philip to his feet. His mouth hung open with blood staining his white T-shirt.
“Nah, it could have been worse. I know some of my opponents had to visit the hospital after they fought me.”
“And you're proud of that?”
“Well...”
“Guys, someone spotted a cop coming this way! Get outta here!” Craig yelled holding his cell phone in the air.
“Come on, Angel.” Harry commanded grabbing Abigail's hand.
Looking around Abigail noticed Kristin being dragged by Ben towards the Jeep but she was being pulled in the opposite direction. “I need to go with Kristin.” She tried to say but he wouldn't listen, just kept a strong hold on her arm.
“Good job Harry!” Niall laughed patting his friend on the back as they climbed into Louis' truck. “Oh, hey Abigail.”
“Hi,” She murmured as Harry helped her into the truck bed. Considering this was her first time really being around Harry and his friends she didn't know how to act. And she couldn't help but feel like they were staring right through her.
“Relax, no one is going to bother you.” Harry whispered in her ear.
Sinking further into Harry's jacket she was silent as the truck fired up. “Hang on, everyone.” Louis commanded everyone through the window.
Knowing how bad the ride was the first time Abigail tried to brace herself but there was nothing really to hold onto in the back of the old beat up Dodge. Going over the first bump caused her to almost fly out of her spot. When her back collided with the side of the bed she felt the wind get knocked out of her. Then to her surprise a strong arm wrapped around her holding her in place. Glancing up at Harry his face was stern, but there was a slight look of amusement in his eyes, just like when he was fighting Philip. A thought clicked in her head, he was planning on this the whole time. Another evil thought crept into her mind, she was just another one of his conquests. He was just gonna use her like he had done to how many other girls. Turning her head she waited for them to get out of the woods then she would ask them to take her to the parking lot Ben had left his car. She didn't want to be around Harry for any longer than she didn't have to.
Harry had to admit the night had gone better than he originally expected. He didn't know Abigail would show up to the fight, hell he could never see someone like her at something like that. Maybe he wanted to show off a little bit in front of her but right now she just looked terrified. Not that he could blame her, they had barely interacted since they got into high school now she was being held against him with blood, most of it not even his, still on his face and clothes from the fight. Even if he wouldn't say it out loud it felt good to hold her, it felt like he was protecting her, and even though he could never say it in front of his friends he always wanted a girl he could protect. All the girls he had been with only wanted one thing, to be with the guy they thought he was.
When they made it out of the woods he was surprised to feel the girl move away from him. Knocking on the window she asked Louis to go to the Seven Eleven just a few miles away. “Why?”
“I need to meet Kristin, I'm staying with her tonight.” She explained pulling her phone out of her back pocket.
“We could take you there,” Harry reasoned, not wanting her to leave so soon.
“I'd rather ride with her and Ben.” She muttered.
Not knowing what to say Harry sighed and sat back. The wind blowing his curls around. Even though it was colder in the truck bed he didn't want his jacket, his ego was blown up seeing Abigail wear it. When Louis pulled into the convenience store parking lot Abigail couldn't have hopped out of the bed fast enough. “Thanks for the ride, Louis,” She smiled softly through the passenger side window. As she stepped away she suddenly remembered something.
Stripping the leather jacket off she tossed it to Harry, almost hitting him in the face. “Bye.” She mumbled before jogging over to the mustang.
“Damn dude, what did you do to her to scare her off?” Zayn asked from the front seat.
“Nothing, not that I know of anyway.” He defended slipping his jacket on.
“Well she sure didn't want to be around you for any longer.” Louis chuckled putting the truck into drive.
“Did I do something?” He questioned looking over at Niall who had been sitting with them the entire time.
“Well...” He muttered scratching his head. “She sure did tense up when you held her. I don't know, something in her face changed.”
Harry sighed, he didn't mean to make her feel uncomfortable. He just couldn't sit back and watch her get knocked around like a pinball. “Hey, remember Liam said he had a class with her? Ask him, maybe she talked to him about past boyfriends or something.” Zayn suggested.
Nodding his head Harry agreed. “Good idea, I will when we get to your house.”
In the mustang Abigail leaned her head on the cool window, listening to Ben and Kristin drone on and on. Being around them brought back memories, mostly good but with good always comes bad. She cringed wrapping her arms around herself trying to block them out. “Ab, did something happen?” She heard Kristin ask.
“No, no, it was just awkward.” She muttered keeping her focus out the window. “Uh Ben, can you just take me home?”
“Yeah, whatever you need,” Ben said glancing at her in the rearview mirror.
Nodding her head in thanks Abigail sat back, she could feel Kristin stare at her wanting her to talk about what was going on in her head. The truth was she didn't know. Everything was fine for a while but then it just changed. She thought all those rumors about Harry were false and that she could actually learn about the boy behind all the tattoos and tough facade. Even though a small part of her wanted to know him she felt a strong sense of deja vu, she felt like that terrified sophomore who was in way over her head. She was thankful when Ben pulled into her driveway, in that moment she just wanted to be alone. “I'll call you tomorrow, ok?” Kristin said letting her out of the backseat.
“Ok, bye Ben, thank you,” She sighed hurrying into the house.
Once inside she headed upstairs to see her parent's bedroom door was shut and she could faintly hear her dad snoring on the other side. In a daze she washed her face and got ready for bed. Crawling under her fluffy comforter she made herself a promise. She wasn't going to return to the place she once was, she couldn't do that after how far she had come. Maybe she could be civil to Harry, they were partners in Home Ec after all but other than that nothing could go on. At least that's what she was telling herself because no matter how much she could deny it she couldn't help but think about his stupid dimpled face. And when she closed her eyes he was still weighing heavy on her mind.
At Zayn's house Harry was sitting outside on the patio smoking the last of his cigarettes. His friends were inside playing Xbox...well Zayn and Louis were, Niall was too busy trying to find a pizza place that delivered past midnight. “Hey mate, there you are,” Hearing Liam's voice made Harry look towards the screen door.
“Hey, the Call of Duty competition going on?”
“Yeah, I died the first round but Zayn and Louis are tied.” Liam explained sitting beside him. “You got another one?” He asked pointing to the cigarette.
Shaking his head he sighed. “Last one.” He mumbled. “I actually wanted to ask you something.”
“About Abigail.”
“How did you know?”
“Come on man, I saw your face when you noticed she was there tonight. I'd have to be an idiot to not know you're interested in her.”
“She doesn't seem that interested.”
“Well you would just have to change her mind, and knowing you that won't be that much of a problem.” Liam chuckled. “Now what did you want to ask me?”
“Right, uh, its just...all right tonight everything was fine. We were on our way back from the fight and to try to help her out during the ride I held onto her. She seemed different, scared even. Even Niall noticed it, and then she all but ran away from me. I was just wondering did she ever talk about any exes or any guy that may have...done something to her? To make her that way?”
Liam shrugged. “If there was, she never talked to me about it. We only ever talked about our homework and projects. The only times we talked about anything personal she would brush it off and try to change the subject as fast as possible.”
“Damn, I was hoping you'd be able to help me.”
“Now hang on, maybe I can still help. Her friend Kristin, the girl that was with her tonight, is in my gym class. She's one of those girls that refuses to do any kind of physical activity so maybe I can talk to her this week.”
“Think she'll talk about one of her best friends? Especially if it is something serious?”
“Its worth a shot but I need to know, do you think you could actually like this girl or are you interested in her cause she hasn't fallen all over you like Vanessa and other girls have?”
“I...I don't really know,” Harry mumbled. “I don't know enough about her to really say right now but I have to say seeing her tonight felt...good.”
“Oh shit, is Harry Styles going soft on us?”
“Shut the hell up, I'm not, but you never know. I might have a girlfriend from now on.”
“Yeah, and Niall's gonna go on a diet.” Liam laughed but noticed how serious his friend looked. “Ok ok, if you're serious about this I'll see what I can find out. And hey you're friends with Ben, Kristin's boyfriend, maybe he can give you a little insight?”
“Maybe, but thanks Liam, I appreciate it.”
“No problem, now come on, I want to see Louis throw a temper tantrum when he loses.”
Laughing Harry followed the older boy into the house where true to tradition Zayn had beaten Louis who was currently sulking on the couch.
