Just a Fool

Chapter 1: New Year, Same Faces

High school is different for everyone. Some make it through without a single problem while others wish it never happened. For Abigail she actually liked school. She wasn't particularly popular but she had her set group of friends she could depend on. Her parents always taught her to be nice to everyone, even though she couldn't speak to the rest of the school. Sure, her grade was divided like every other school but there were a few groups she knew to stay away from. Harry Styles and his friends were at the top of that list. Everything was normal in middle school, he was a charming, outgoing kid who never met a stranger then when they returned for freshman year he had changed. He had a lip piercing, he was building a sleeve on his left arm, and he was no longer the happy go lucky kid everyone knew and loved. Abigail wasn't around long enough to judge him, all she knew was what other students told her but Harry was never one to dismiss any rumors.
“Abby! Wake up, its the first day of senior year.” She heard her mom say from her bedroom door turning the light on. “The best year of your life!”
Groaning into her pillow Abigail moved her dirty blonde hair out of her face, her dog Lucy was laying on her back preventing Abigail from pulling her comforter over her head. It was still dark outside, the sky turning grey with the sun just slightly peaking over the mountains. “There's Pop-Tarts in the kitchen if you have time for breakfast.”
“Thanks mom,” She mumbled pulling down her pajama shorts. Stumbling into the bathroom she ran the hot water for a shower. “Lets get the best year of my life started.”
It felt like Harry had just fallen asleep when he heard his mom come into his room telling him it was time to get ready for school. “Harry, honey, what happened to your eye?” She asked gently pushing his curls off his face revealing his black eye.
'Shit,' Harry thought. “Oh uh, me and the guys went to play football in the park. One of them must have hit me.”
“Why my son couldn't play in the band or some other sort of non-dangerous activity with his friends I don't know.” She sighed. “So I have the late shift again, can you handle dinner on your own?”
“Yeah, I'll be fine.”
“Ok, now no more rough games, I don't want to see you all bruised up anymore, got it?”
“Got it.” He repeated as she walked out of his room. “I'll just have to be better at hiding it.” He mumbled climbing out of bed.
Pulling her car to a stop Abigail checked her hair and makeup in the mirror. School didn't start for another fifteen minutes giving her plenty of time. As she was grabbing her bag she heard her phone go off. A new message from Kristin. 'Where the hell are you? I'm the only senior in here and a bunch of freshman boys keep staring at me!' Rolling her eyes Abigail sent back. 'In the parking lot, coming to save you now.'
Not many cars were in the parking lot but when she heard a horn blaring from behind her she almost jumped out of her skin. Turning around she recognized the driver instantly. Harry Styles. “You're kind of in my spot, babe.” He smirked, sticking his head out the window.
Rolling her eyes Abigail kept walking, deliberately going slow to piss him off. When she heard the horn again she giggled. She knew most people were intimidated by Harry, given his appearance but she had no reason to fear him. She still remembered when they were in elementary school and he came to school dressed as a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle for Halloween. He accidently hit himself in the head with his plastic nunchucks and cried until he got extra candy. When she reached the doors to the gymnasium she glanced back to see Harry and his friends gathered around his car like they did most days until their first class.
All students were told the wait in the gym until the first bell but most upperclassmen stayed outside in their cars. Walking across the hardwood floor she saw Kristin and Charlotte waiting on her at the bottom of the bleachers. “About time, how long does it take you to walk fifty feet?” Kristin exclaimed.
“How much caffeine have you had today?” Abigail asked dropping her bag at her feet.
“Quite a bit, but what do you expect? I've been used to waking up at noon every day and now you expect me to get up at six? I need something to get me going.” Kristin explained. “Even though I guess Ben could...”
“Don't even finish that sentence.” Charlotte warned. “The last thing I need to think about is you and my cousin...” She shuddered.
Abigail chuckled, even now after all this time Charlotte was uncomfortable with her best friend dating her first cousin. Before Christmas Kristin had broken up with her long time boyfriend leaving her heartbroken. They felt bad for her so Charlotte introduced her to Ben, thinking it would just be a rebound. Turns out they had a lot in common and had basically become inseparable, much to Charlotte's dismay. “Sorry Char, but I can't help it. We were together almost every day over the summer.”
“I know and now he's gone back to his school across town and you won't be able to see him and why is life so unfair?” Charlotte grumbled, she had heard this speech too many times to count.
“You know what? You need to get a boyfriend or something so you can finally feel the love and stop being such a happiness killer.”
“Abigail doesn't have a boyfriend! Why do I need one?!”
“Because Abby isn't a Grinch when it comes to love. Or at least she doesn't make fun of me when I go off on a tangent about Ben. Plus she was the same way with...oh shit.” She mumbled when she saw her friend's face fall. “Sorry Abby, I wasn't thinking. You know how I am when I haven't gotten enough sleep!”
Abigail's mouth perked up in a half smile “I know, I know. Its ok, lets just change the subject.”
“Right, so who do we all have for first period?”
Dropping his cigarette on the ground Harry listened to his friends complain about having Mrs. Calum for English. “She hates me, she almost failed me last year just because I forgot to turn in one single paper.” Niall exclaimed.
“That single paper was a research assignment we had to work on for three months.” Zayn laughed.
“So? She doesn't have to be a bitch about it.” Niall grumbled crossing his arms.
“Don't be a baby.” Harry said as the bell began to ring. Turning his head he watched as the students filed out of the gymnasium. He wasn't paying attention until his eyes saw one girl in particular. “Hey, what do we know about that one?”
“Who?” Louis asked.
“The blonde, in the white sweater.” Harry answered.
“Oh that's Abigail, she helped me pass History last year.” Liam explained. “She's pretty quiet, it took me forever to get her say more than two words to me.”
“Why are you asking?”
Running a hand through his dark hair Harry smirked. “I just figured I needed to expand my horizons seeing its senior year.”
“What about Vanessa?”
Harry shuddered. “We hooked up once over the summer, she told me it didn't mean anything and then she blows up my phone the next day while I'm with my mom. Plus I was drunk.”
“So never again?”
“Maybe on a rainy day.” He shrugged making his friends laugh.
Making his way into his homeroom Harry took his usual seat in the back of the room. He was the last one into the classroom which wasn't a surprise to anyone including the teacher. “Nice of you to join us,” Mr. Parker sighed.
Rolling his eyes Harry sat back while the morning announcements were read over the intercom. “Any students who are not happy with their electives are allowed to request a transfer. Forms to do so will be in the lobby after school.”
'Shit,' Harry thought. At the end of last year all students were given the option of picking three electives. He remembered getting a form but he couldn't remember if he turned it in. “All right I'm going to pass out your schedules, once you have yours you're free to go to your first class.” Mr. Parker explained holding a stack of papers in his hand.
Once Harry got his he headed into the hallway where he saw his friends waiting on him. “Home Economics?”
“What did you say, mate?” Louis asked.
“I got Home Ec as an elective.”
When the words left his mouth he heard his friends trying to hold back their laughter. “You're sure gonna look purty in an apron.” Niall cackled.
“Shut the hell up.” Harry snapped.
“How did you end up in that class? I thought we all agreed to take auto shop like we do every year.” Liam said as they began walking to their first class.
“Well I got that too, I mean, my other electives are fine its just that one.” He explained.
Zayn placed a hand on his shoulder. “Hey, maybe it won't be that bad and if it is you can always transfer into another class.”
“Good point, I'll see you guys later.” He told them going into his Science class.
When lunch rolled around Abigail was waiting in the senior part of the cafeteria for her friends when she noticed Harry and his buddies outside. She watched them for a second, one she knew from her History class the previous year. The others she had only seen in the hallways when they were on their way to class. It was almost humerus to her how stereotypical the scene looked with their tattoos, brooding appearance, and smoking. Turning back to open her water she noticed Charlotte almost sprinting to the table. “Look outside right now.” She commanded.
Turning around Abigail saw Harry and the quarterback of the football team standing chest to chest, a crowd of people were gathering around them. “Come on, lets go see what's going on.” Charlotte said grabbing Abigail's sleeve before she had a chance to protest.
Outside they heard shouts from different students. 'Beat his ass Harry! Don't be a pussy Philip!' Abigail couldn't even concentrate on what was being said, her focus was set on Harry. He wasn't intimidated at all by the other boy, his green eyes were scanning Philip up and down, sizing him up. There were rumors about Philip being in a few small fights but his record was nothing compared to Harry. “All right, everyone break it up!” A booming voice yelled.
The students groaned as the assistant principal Mr. Rowe directed them back into the cafeteria. “Ok, you all go to lunch. You two,” He snapped pointing to the two boys. “Don't let me catch you again or its detention for the next month.”
Shaking his head Harry whispered something to Philip before walking back to his friends. “I wonder what he said to him.” Charlotte murmured.
Abigail shrugged, grabbing her friend's arm to pull her back to the cafeteria with the rest of the crowd. When they reached their table they found Kristin waiting on them. “Where were you guys?”
“Harry almost beat Philip's ass.” Charlotte chuckled.
“And I missed it?!”
“He didn't actually beat him up, they just got in each other's faces and had an intimidating stare off for a few minutes.” Abigail told her friend who just looked disappointed.
“Oh well then I didn't miss anything.”
Harry dug in his pocket for another cigarette, after Philip's attempt at growing a set of balls he needed another smoke to calm himself down. “What the hell was his problem?” Zayn asked.
“I flicked my smoke and I guess it got on his designer shoes.” He explained. “He's been looking for a reason to fight me for years.”
“So what did you tell him?”
“I told him don't make plans for tomorrow night. If he wants a fight he'll get one.”
After lunch Harry made his way to the Home Ec room, he dreaded it more with each step. Opening the door he realized he was the only guy, a plus, but then he noticed a few girls he would much rather avoid. Vanessa and her friends were staring at him from their seats from the front row as he walked into the room. He swore he could smell the overwhelming aroma of Vanessa's perfume from feet away. When she left his house that time he had to wash his sheets three times to get the smell out. Then he noticed a girl sitting by herself in the back of the classroom. Abigail. Noticing it was the only seat available he sat down next to her, earning the quiet girl a few glares from the front. Finally he was able to get a good look at her, from her dirty blonde hair, bright blue eyes that were wide with shock. “Don't look so freaked out, Angel.” He smirked. “It was the only seat left.”
“Right, sorry,” She muttered turning her attention to her notebook.
While she was distracted he looked her up and down. He had gotten a good view of her body earlier that morning but he was thankful to get a closer look. Her lightly tan skin was clear, with barely a hint of makeup. She was pretty, a subtle beauty that made him curious. Unlike the other girls in his grade who dressed up for the first day of school, Abigail wore a simple tank top with a baggy sweater and jeans. She wasn't trying to impress anyone and he liked that about her already. “What happened to your eye?” Her soft voice snapped him out of his thoughts.
“Oh uh, football with my friends, a pass went wrong,” He mumbled shaking out his hair.
“Oh, I thought it was because of a run in with Philip.”
“You saw that?”
“I think everyone saw it, what happened anyway?”
“Why so many questions, Angel? You worried about me?” Great, that's the way to go. Turn the tables on her, try to piss her off.
Abigail scoffed. “No, I'm just wondering what you did to piss off one of the nicest guys I know.”
Philip? A nice guy? Harry almost laughed in her face. “Don't worry about it, babe, but just know if Philip's one of the nicest guys you know then you need to get out more.”
“Well what's your definition of nice?”
Before he had the chance to answer they heard someone come into the classroom. A middle aged woman who appeared to be frazzled and unprepared stumbled through the door. “H-Hello, sorry I'm late. The first day is always hectic you know?” She lightly chuckled. “Anyway my name is Miss Brooks and we will be seeing each other every day this semester.”
Harry wasn't even listening to her anymore. He was paying more attention to the girl next to him. Why he had never paid attention to her before confused him. Sure, he didn't necessarily go for the 'good girl' but from his experience with them they weren't all that good, especially after they got a few drinks in them. He was sure this girl would be no different, he just had to bide his time. When the class ended he found his friends in the hallway waiting for him. “So how was it?” Liam asked.
He noticed Abigail walk past him, she was laughing with another dark haired girl. “It was all right, I think I'll stay in it.”
Zayn and Liam exchanged looks. “Any specific reason for that?”
“Maybe.” Harry chuckled as the bell rang.
All right so this probably sucked but I just felt like writing :)
