Business Proposal

Her Feeling

Mel POV
Mel’s spirits lifted slightly as harry left the room. She knew he’d been avoiding her lately, but she wasn’t sure why. Part of her wondered if he was sick of having her around. But another part of her was grateful, because she needed distance from him. Five minutes later, Mel headed down stairs but Harry was nowhere to be seemed. When she got to the kitchen, she noticed that he’d pulled out two wine glasses and set them on the counter. After washing her hands, Mel pulled out the salad and vegetable strudel. While eating the vegetable strudel, Mel noticed harry coming from the basement. “Dinner would be ready in twenty minutes,” she said.
“I can wait. Pull out some of those nuts and olives I know you have hidden, and I’ll munch until dinner is ready. And I have a wine here and it will go very well with chocolate.” He said with a crooked grin.
Mel reached into the pantry and pulled out a container of mixed nuts and olives, then placed then in front of harry on the kitchen island. She pulled a stool and seat next to harry, and watched him as he took a handful of nuts and poured them into his mouth.
They sat in silence for a few moments as the smell of the strudel began to permeate the kitchen. “That smells incredible,” harry said.
“Well it my first time using this recipe, and it turned out nice. So I think I’ll keep the recipe because I like it,” Mel agreed.
“You experiment a lot with your cooking huh?”
“Yes I do, it makes cooking more fun. I have my tired and true recipes from experimenting.”
“Is cooking a good mood indictor for you?” he asked, nodding toward the wine.
I took the first taste of the wine. “Oh my goodness! That’s amazing.”
Getting up, she pulled the piece of vegetable strudel from the oven and placed it on a dinner plate in from of harry.
“Thanks this looks amazing, Rose,” he said.
“I hope you like it.” Mel pulled her wine, and then stood up quickly. Let the game begin. Reaching back to the pantry, she came out with a bar of dark chocolate, and sat back down at the counter. From the corner of her eye, she could see that harry was concentrating on her as she placed the chocolate into her mouth, and closed her mouth enjoying the flavour. When she took a sip of wine, she broke in to a moan and smiled. “Oh wow. This is good. I’ll save you some, harry- you have to try this combination.”When she opened her eyes and looked over at him, he quickly looked down at his plate, forcing himself to concentrate. Mel let out a tiny victory smile. Knowing that her action had a major affected on harry. But it also shows something that Mel couldn’t figure out.
“Seriously Mel, this is delicious. I had no ideas that you can make something like this in a home kitchen.”
“Well harry, you kitchen doesn’t quite fit the definition of ‘home kitchen,’ but yes, it’s actually easy.”
Mel was left in awe as harry finished his food.
“Thanks Rose, this is really good. I appreciate it.”
“You’re welcome.”
“I usually don’t get food this good when I order take-away. But only if you let me buy the groceries.”
“Nah, just keep contributing wine and we’re even.”
“We’re not roommates, Rose. And I think I can put food on the table in my house.”
Mel looked at him in surprise. “Of course you can,” she said gently. “But...”
“But what?”
“But you don’t need to buy my food or support my cooking habit.” She said quietly. But you if harry decided to go back on take-away food, whenever they argued or fight, she thought.
“You’re my wife, Mel. I hardly think that my paying for groceries compromises our relationship.”
She smiled sadly. “We have an arrangement, harry, not a relationship. But we are probably closer to that than we are to husband and wife.”
She watched as harry walked toward her, leaning down to her eyes level and asked. “Are you asking to revisit the terms of our agreement, Rose?” Before Mel could think harry lips were on her.
“Just let this kiss helps with your decisions.”
Standing away from the harry’s kiss, she placed her glass in the sink and headed for the stairs. Because if she stayed, she might be tempted to open negotiations.
