In Good Company
ONE
Madeline stood at the security gates at the airport, saying goodbye to her mother. She was flying off to London for her summer internship.
"Madi, maybe you should just stay here. London is so far away, and I can't keep you safe over there." Her mother, was very persistent on her staying in New York, but this was a once and a lifetime opportunity and she couldn't pass this up.
"Mom, I'm eighteen years old. I'm not a child, I don't need you to take care of me anymore. I'll be okay, I promise. I'll see you at the end of the summer, love you." Madi said, placing a kiss on her mothers cheek, and giving her one last hug.
It took her twenty five minutes to get through security, having to locate her passport. She showed it to the man, and he stamped it. Smiling, she went to the waiting area. The plane didn't board until 2 a.m, which wasn't for another hour. She pulled out her favorite book, To Kill A Mockingbird, and began to read. The small area was very crowded, making it hard to focus on the book, so she decided to listen to her music instead.
It was nearly 2 a.m, so Madi put her iPod in her pocket, gathered her bags, and headed over to the gate.
"We are now boarding gate 52B to London, England." The flight attended said, cheerily through the speaker. Madi shuffled her way to the gate, placing her bag suitcases on the baggage cart, and pulling her carry on over her shoulder. She looked at her ticket, and then looked for her seat. 15B. She smiled when she realized it was a window seat, and she slid in getting comfortable. It took about 20 minutes for everyone to load on, and 30 to actually take off. When the plane was stably in the air, the flight attendant came back over the intercom. "Hello, passengers. We will be in London in 7 hours, and 25 minutes. Sit back, and enjoy the flight." Madi put her earbuds into her ears, and slowly drifted off to the Beatles.
Madi awoke to the planes tires bouncing on the runway as it landed. The plane finally came to a halt, and the passengers began to clear off. She immediately made her way to the baggage claim, and thankfully found her bags in minutes. She collected them, and quickly made her way to the lobby. She searched the crowd of people, before stopping on a man holding up a sign that read, 'Company Magazine Interns'. Smiling, she made her way over to the man, and realized there was a small group, of about 3 others, hovering near by, looking around her age. The man lead them out to a cab, and ushered them in. He gave the driver directions, and then they were off.
After 15 minutes of driving, the cab stopped in front a large building. Madi was the first to climb out of the cab, entering the building where she was greeted by a hansom man, maybe two years older than her. His golden hair fit nicely with his skin tone, and the suit he was wearing made his blue eyes pop. The rest of the group didn't take long to get there, and the man smiled at everyone, lingering on Madi for a moment.
"Hi, I'm Louis Tomlinson. You will be working with me, during your time here. We have arranged for you to stay in this apartment building for the summer, no need to worry about rent. Here are your apartment numbers, and keys. You guys rest up for the rest of the week, and I will come back on Monday to get you all. I will be giving you a tour of the company building, so I expect you all to be here 8 a.m Monday morning. You can introduce yourselves then." He smiled at them all once more, before exciting the building. They all looked around at each other, each with a different shade of confusion, before getting into the elevator.
Madi's apartment was on the second floor, while everyone else's was on the third. She made her way to apartment 4B, and pushed the key into the lock. Pushing the door open ever so slightly, she stepped inside, closing the door behind her. The floors were freshly polished, and vacuumed, and the apartment was fully furnished. She made her way over to the fridge, letting out a sigh of relief when she found it was fully stocked. She grabbed an apple, and then lugged her bags to her bedroom.
The bed was king sized, and memory foam. She took a running start, and jumped onto the bed, sinking into it. The sheets were silk, and they were covered by a blue down comforter. It smelled like vanilla. The pillows were the best of all. She rested her head on one of them, making it feel so light. She was overwhelmed with joy.
It didn't take long, but she finally unpacked her things, and was settled in. Changing into her pajamas, and getting some food into her, she slipped between the sheets of her bed and flicked on the bedside lamp. She pulled out her book, and flipped to where she had left off. She read for hours, before finally getting to sleep.
