The Chosen One

A New Beginning

There I was starting a new adventure in life. I had said goodbye to all my hometown friends, knowing I wouldn’t see any of them again until the following summer since I wouldn’t get back to say goodbye to them before school started again. I had packed all the necessities, double, and then triple checked I had everything I would need, which included a passport for the Canadian shows we would be going to. I lastly had hugged and kissed my parents goodbye at the airport promising to keep out of trouble.

I now had been on the plane for about an hour. My nerves were starting to send me into overdrive. It still hadn’t quite hit me what I was going to be doing. Honestly, I wasn’t even sure where to go once off the plane.

At the same time I had a feeling of excited butterflies. I could tell they weren’t from nervousness, because they helped comfort me. I think they were there because it was just a brand new exciting experience. Also, I couldn’t wait to see the boys, especially Harry.

When the plane landed in Atlanta, I first went and found my luggage. Then I needed to figure out where to go. I walked farther out of the concourse and down the escalators trying to find the proper way to exit the airport. There were a lot of people holding signs with names on them. That was when a caught a glimpse of a rather large man in a suit holding a sign that read “Madeline Cooke.”

As I walked towards him I was relieved that I wouldn’t have to find my own way to wherever I needed to go, but then again I was a little upset it wasn’t Harry standing there. I shook my head at the previous thought. We were and only would be friends.

Once in front of the man I stated, “Hello, I’m Madeline Cooke. I am here joining the One Direction Tour.”

He nodded and said, “Well of course you are. I have heard so much about you. I’m Marcus, One Direction’s driver on the North American leg of the tour. It’s great to meet you.” He held out his hand and I shook it. “Shall we?” he said.

I followed Marcus out to his car, wondering where it would take me. I soon found that one out. It was to one of the buses where other crew members slept on the tour. He showed me to my bunk and where I could unload my things and then he had to leave to get the boys from an interview. I hoped I would get to see them soon.

I had just a few minutes to get settled when a new person suddenly appeared on the bus. She introduced herself as Lola and explained she would sort of be my boss. She couldn’t have been much older than me, maybe 20 or 21? She had long blonde hair and was rather tall. She took me inside the stadium and showed me what I would be contributing to while on tour. I explained that I would be a merch seller outside, before and after the concert. So that meant I could still watch the concert from the back or behind stage. This sounded like a really nice deal.

She debriefed me on how to do everything, including how to deal with the crazy One Direction fans, who would most likely lunge themselves at all the merchandise in excitement. I didn’t let her comment of crazy fan phase me although it was weird, only a few days ago, I was one of those fans. I sort of had to laugh to myself at the thought.

I helped a few other merch people set up for that night’s concert, and had the rest of the day to myself. Fans were already waiting to get in, but weren’t able to start buying from us for a few hours. I decided to explore the stadium a bit.

It was so weird to see all of the seats empty like that. I walked closer to the stage. There were only a few crew people around getting last minute things ready. I assumed most of the setting up was done the previous day, since there was a day break in between the Nashville and Atlanta concerts. I walked around to get on the stage and looked out to the seats. I was overwhelmed with the thoughts of the hundreds of screaming fans who would soon fill these seats. I closed my eyes and tried to imagine the night I was brought up, which led me to this amazing opportunity.

Then I heard a familiar voice come up from behind me. “Mads? What are you doing? I am so glad you are here!” I turned to see a Mr. Harry Styles walking towards me.

“Harry!” I ran and gave him a big bear hug. “I was just…sort of taking it all in I suppose,” I said as I smiled.

“It is a pretty amazing thing. Sometimes I just can’t believe this is all happening to us, and then I just have to walk out here and take in all in, same as you” he replied.

I nodded understanding where he was probably coming from. We were quiet for a moment when he grabbed my hand and said, “Come on, we need catch up! I have to rehearse in a few minutes!”

I followed him backstage to his dressing room. He asked me about my trip getting here. I made sure not to leave out any boring details, because he really seemed interested in everything I was saying. After I finished he said, “Well, I am so happy you are all settled in. Since you are only working before and after the concerts, I fully expect you to be supporting us out there somewhere.”

“Don’t worry, I will be.” I said cheekily. Then he smiled. God, I loved the way he smiled. His dimples were absolutely to die for.

After a few seconds of awkward silence, because we were just sort of staring at each other, the other boys walked in. They sort of just paused at the door until Louis yelled, “Maddie! You made it!” I was surprised at how excited they were to see me. I mean, surely they’ve met more exciting people in their lives. They all walked further into Harry’s dressing room towards us sitting on the little black couch.

“Sorry to pull little Harold away from you Maddie, but we are supposed to be on stage already rehearsing” Niall said smiling at me and then giving Harry an odd sort of look. They seriously had some sort of telepathy between each other because they all started giggling like a bunch of little girls. It was like they all knew something I was completely oblivious to.

"What are you laughing at?” I asked.

Liam looked at me still laughing a little, “Oh, it’s nothing Madeline. You will probably find out for yourself all in due time,” he said as he gave Harry a little shove and then proceeded to run out the door. The remaining four boys ran right after him. Yep, those playful little girls were definitely hiding something from me.
