Happy Birthday
Chapter 1: Happy Birthday
It was in the early days of summer, just getting back from college to my small hometown of 5,000 people in Ohio. It was really nice being with my friends from high school pretending as though we had not just spent almost an entire year away from each other.
It started as any other typical summer. This is until my 19th birthday when I received possibly the best gift I could have asked for, which little to my knowledge at the time, would make my entire summer.
I woke up around 10:00 AM on my birthday, June 8th. I figured I might as well sleep in. It was my birthday after all. What was I supposed to do? I didn’t have any plans. All of my friends had summer jobs already. I had not quite yet reached the proper motivation level since being home to find a job.
After lying in bed for a while, I decided to get up, and head downstairs to the kitchen to see what my parents may have cooked me since it was Saturday and they were home. Of course it was my favorite, pancakes and sausage. YUM!
“Good morning parentals!” I said as I gave them each a kiss on their cheeks.
They both replied smiling saying, “Happy Birthday, Madeline!”
I sat down in my usual chair at the table to observe my delightful breakfast a bit closer. There was something strange about the pancakes. They appeared to be in the shape of two letters? … numbers?... both of which were kind of hard to make out. I asked them, “What is this about?”
They smiled to each other and then back at me. My mom replied, “Can’t you read what they say?”
I gave a really confused look to her and said, “Umm… no?”
My dad cut in “Oh, Rebecca. Can’t we just spill the secret to her? I think it will take her too long to figure out our little clue.” He looked to me and said, “Your breakfast is trying to give you a hint to what your birthday present is from us! It is spelling out a 1D!”
I instantly knew what that meant! I screamed, “ONE DIRECTION?!”
My mother grinned widely while nodding her head saying they had gotten me a front row One Direction concert ticket for June 18th in Columbus, Ohio! I was so excited all I could get out was a bunch of squealing. The only way I could think to thank them at the time was to hug them repeatedly, while jumping up and down.
My parents sure knew how to surprise me in the most odd ways, but I couldn't believe it! I, Madeline Rae Cooke, was going to be within arms distance of the five most gorgeous men in the entire world!
