We Go Together

Chapter 2

Liam Payne and Zayn Malik had both recently moved to Doncaster and Liam’s mum had suggested that they get a snack for themselves. Zayn was helping the Payne’s move in, as his family had moved in a week earlier. Liam and Zayn were best friends who had been relieved to learn that they were moving to the same town, after living next door to each other for many years. They had seen Anne’s Bakery when they had drove into the town for the first time. Now, they stood in front of the glass display cases, looking at the girl behind the counter.

Her nametag said “Michelle,” and she was smiling at them. She had a long brown braid hanging over her shoulder and her brilliantly cerulean eyes stared at him, wide and sparkling. She had on a lavender apron, which had a smudge of pink icing on it. It hugged her curvy hips like a second skin. Her nails were painted a lovely, if not loud, orange which matched her converse, which peeked out under her dark jeans.

“Hi,” Liam said.

“Hi,” she said cheerily, “Sorry I didn’t see you. Can I help you?”

Liam, ever the shy fellow, spluttered, “Um…er…Haven’t decided yet.” Thankfully, some other customers came in at that point, so Liam bent his head to look closely at the various cupcakes and pastries, trying not to blush.

“No wonder I can’t make friends,” he thought, “I can’t even talk to anyone.” Zayn saw Liam’s distress and elbowed him the side, looking sympathetic, and making Liam blush light pink. She chattered to the customers, several elderly women, each of them grabbing a scone. Clearly, they were regulars and she didn’t have to ask them what they wanted. The women said goodbye to the girl and she walked over to Liam, thinking he was trying to decide, “The lemon cupcakes are delicious.”

He looked up at her, “Yes?”

“They’re my personal favorite,” she declared, “but a lot of people like chocolate with vanilla icing.”

“Actually,” he said, “I love lemon. I’ll take a lemon one and…” he looked for something his mum would like, “And one of those.”

She pulled out one of the “Super Duper Peanut Putter” cupcakes that he had pointed to, and a lemon one. She put them into two paper sacks, which said, “Anne’s Bakery,” in lavender script.

“Thanks. Michelle, right?” Liam asked.

She looked at him, blinking, “Oh, the nametag! No, well yes, but everyone calls me Micky.”

“Oh,” said Liam, “Micky... Why?”

“Because I like it better than Michelle,” she laughed, “What’s yours?”

“Liam,” he said, shaking her hand over the glass case, “And this is my...friend, Zayn.”

“Did you both just move here?” she asked.

“Yes,” Liam said, “I guess you know most of the people that come in?”

“Yes,” she said, “I’ve lived here a long time.”

“Hello there, love,” said a deep voice from the doorway.

“Hey Max,” said Micky.

Liam and Zayn looked him over. He was one of those bad boy types, smelling of cigarette smoke and wearing a black leather jacket. He had…swagger. He was probably rich and popular. Liam rolled his eyes internally but figured he shouldn’t be on this guy’s bad side.
Max went behind the counter and slipped an experienced hand around Micky’s hip and kissed her on the cheek. She smiled shyly and as Max turned, he gave Liam and Zayn a look that clearly said, “This is my turf, so don’t even think about it.” Liam bristled at this, but didn’t do anything.

“Nice to meet you,” he said curtly to Micky.

“I’ll see you around,” said Micky. Then Liam and Zayn walked out and back to his new house.

Max leaned on the glass case, his head resting on his fist, looking subtlety seductive. Micky got him a plain sugar cookie, with a “M” on it in red icing.

His low, rumbling voice carried to the back room, where Louis stood listening intently. He and Max were acquaintances, but not friends or even enemies, although Max thought differently. They tolerated each other, but Louis was pretty protective of Micky, partly because he was Harry’s cousin. He and Harry had been best friends since Harry had been born. Partly because, Louis had known Micky almost as long, since he was four, and she was two. She and her father had moved to Doncaster after Micky’s mother died and her father got a job in Doncaster. Louis had basically been Micky’s brother ever since. In the first year she moved to Doncaster, Louis and Harry had walked around together, with Micky in between them, holding their hands. One time, a kid made fun of Micky’s fantastically long hair and Louis beat him up. They were probably only 7 and 9. Now, they were 17 and 19, but Louis would still defend her to the death. He was chivalrous to a fault.

Max paid for his cookie and stood by Micky, eating it and looking at her as if she were the cookie. Eventually, Harry got back and Micky returned to icing the cookies.

She and Louis listened to music, dancing slightly, each in their own little icing-filled world. Louis leaned over to the radio and turned it up, singing along to an old Beatle’s song. He put his icing bag down and grabbed Micky, who dropped her icing bag on the counter. He twirled her around and they danced like they were stuck in the sixties in the back kitchen, dodging mixers and tables. Louis spun Micky in toward his body and they bobbed along, her back resting on his stomach with his arms wrapped around her waist. Then he spun her out again and they continued skipping around the room, making up crazy moves along the way. Harry watched from the front, smiling to himself. They had danced like this for many years. Harry always thought that Louis looked happiest dancing with Micky, but what did he know? Louis said she was like a sister to him, so Harry never said anything else about it. Micky had told Harry that she had a crush on Louis, but that may have changed since she told him; that was several years ago. Anne came in and watched Louis and Mick’s final steps as the song ended. “Alright Fred and Ginger. Time to lock up.” Micky and Louis had red cheeks and were smiling as big as they could.
