Loved You First

Three

Harry pulled into the snowy driveway and felt himself getting excited. He couldn’t wait to see his mum and older sister, wondering what they’d planned for him. Gemma had been texting him for the past few hours and teasing him about it. They knew all too well how much he loved surprises.

The three boys sprung out of the vehicle as soon as Harry put it in park. Two and a half hours was a long drive for England and Harry was tired of driving. They grabbed their overnight bags and walked through the front door.

“Mum we’re here!” Harry shouted into the house.

“Hello boys!” Anne smiled excitedly as she came around the corner. She wrapped her arms around her son and they shared a tight hug as she kissed his cheek.

“How was the drive?” she asked as she went to hug Louis and Zayn.

“It was fine, Miss Anne,” Louis smiled as he greeted the older woman.

“And how’re you?” she asked before hugging Zayn.

“Excited to be here, Miss Anne,” Zayn smiled as she kissed his cheek too.

“You need a shave,” Anne pointed to the scruff on Zayn’s face.

“Where’s Robin?” Harry asked.

“He’s run to the store for some last-minute ingredients,” Anne answered.

“What about Gemma?” he asked.

“Upstairs,” his mum smirked. Just as she was about to say something else, they heard as series of footsteps from upstairs.

They thundered down the stairs and Gemma’s voice called, “Harry! Look who’s here!”

Harry turned to see a face he hadn’t seen in nearly five years. Her brown hair had grown passed her shoulders and all the way down to the middle of her back. She looked older, curvier, but other than that she’d hardly changed.

“Audrey?” Harry asked dumbly as he stared at her with an open mouth.

“Harry!” Audrey said excitedly. She ran and hugged him, wrapping her arms tightly around his neck. Harry’s brain finally managed to process what exactly was happening and he broke out in a grin.

“Audi!” he shouted, picking her up and spinning her around. They pulled away and smiled at each other.

“My God, you’ve grown,” she said, her American accent immediately recognizable.

“That’s what happens when you disappear for five years,” Harry scolded.

“Sorry, since my dad moved back to the states it’s been hard to get back over here,” she shrugged.

“I know, but we’ve missed having you around here. Especially Harry,” Gemma smirked.

“Audrey, these are two of my band mates from One Direction, Louis and Zayn,” Harry introduced before Audrey could process what his sister said. As they politely shook hands Harry shot Gemma an absolute death glare.

“So what brings you back to England?” Louis asked.

“Audrey’s going to be living in London for the next six months,” Gemma grinned.

“Seriously?” Harry asked.

“Yeah, I’ve got an internship at Wieden+Kennedy advertising firm,” Audrey nodded excitedly.

“Congratulations!” Harry said, hugging Audrey again. It was just an excuse to pull her tightly into his arms again.

“Why don’t you kids head into the living room and I’ll put on some tea?” Anne asked.

“Oh, I’ll come help you!” Audrey offered, wiggling out of Harry’s arms and following Anne into the kitchen.

Harry watched Audrey as she left, amazed at how after five years his childhood crush could still get him reeling. She was only wearing a tight sweater dress, stockings, and boots but Harry had never been more attracted to anyone in his life.

As soon as they were gone Harry reached over and pinched Gemma hard on the arm. “Ow!” she cried out and rubbed the reddening skin.

“I can’t believe you tried to tell Audrey that I liked her,” Harry whispered harshly.

“What? She’s completely thick to it anyway. You were practically drooling from the second you saw her and she hardly noticed,” Gemma smiled.

“So Audrey is an old flame of yours, Hazza?” Zayn smirked and Gemma burst out laughing.

“Oh, he wishes,” she chuckled. “Audrey is about my age. Her dad used to live next door to us and she’d come to England to see him for two months in the summer and one month at Christmas. And poor Harry’s been in love with her since he was twelve.”

Harry checked over his shoulder nervously to make sure Audrey didn’t overhear. Just then Robin came through the door carrying a bag of groceries. “Let me help you with that,” Harry offered before taking the bag from him.

“Thanks Harry. Hey boys, how was the trip?” Robin asked.

“Good, thanks,” Zayn nodded.

“I take it you’ve seen Audrey,” Robin said with a knowing smile.

“Yes,” Harry groaned. “And Gemma’s taken it upon herself to share the entire story of our childhoods.”

“Well you’re both grown up now and she’s looking rather fit. No telling what could happen,” Robin winked. “You kids head to the living room while Harry and I see what trouble his mother is getting into in the kitchen.”

Harry carried the brown sack behind his step-dad as they walked into the kitchen. Audrey was apparently laughing at something Anne had said and Harry felt immediately mortified. It seemed that his entire family was trying to inform her of Harry’s childhood crush.

“So Audrey was just telling me a bit about her internship. It sounds exciting,” Anne grinned.

“Where are you staying in London? If you don’t mind me asking,” Robin asked.

“Oh, it’s some corporate housing in Woolwich. It’s not much and I don’t care for the area but at least the company’s paying,” Audrey shrugged.

“Are you kidding? You can’t live in Woolwich, it’s too dangerous!” Harry exclaimed. With the way Audrey looked, she’d be attacked within the first week of living there.

“Harry’s right, it wouldn’t be safe for you to live there alone. Do you at least have a roommate?” Robin asked.

“No, it would be just me,” Audrey shrugged. “But I really can’t afford to sign a lease for just six months. Though I’m hoping the job is more permanent, the company can’t promise anything and I can’t get stuck in a lease with no income.”

“Then you can come stay with me.” The words tumbled out of Harry’s mouth before he even knew what he was saying. Three pairs of eyes looked at him with pure shock, his mother’s face quickly switching to a look of approval.

“I couldn’t impose on you like that, Harry. Besides I’d never be able to split the rent with you,” Audrey shook her head.

“You don’t have to, you’d stay as my guest. My townhouse is plenty big enough, you can have your pick of the spare bedrooms, and it’s in Kensington,” Harry explained. He knew Kensington was Audrey’s favorite borough being so central and so close to the museums.

“You really wouldn’t mind?” Audrey asked.

“Of course he wouldn’t,” Anne piped. “Besides, no member of this family would be able to rest well knowing that you’re in such a crime-ridden area.”

“Alright then! Let’s do it, roomie!” Audrey grinned as she went to hug Harry tightly. Harry immediately returned the hug before she pulled away to cup his face. “You must be the sweetest boy on the planet, Harry Styles,” she said before standing on her tiptoes to kiss his cheek.

As Harry looked down at Audrey with pure adoration in his light green eyes, Anne’s eyebrow cocked at the two of them. She wondered how her twenty-year old son would manage himself around the girl he’d been in love with since puberty.
