Out of the Blue

I hate to turn up out of the blue, uninvited
But I couldn’t stay away, I couldn’t fight it
I had hoped you’d see my face and that you’d be reminded
That for me, it isn’t over
—Someone Like You, Adele

“Hello, Lana

I stared at him, unbelieving. It didn’t come as much of a surprise; I knew we would eventually see each other again, because this had been our favourite place to come when we visited London. But still, I couldn’t believe that today, the day when I had thought about him for the first time in a long time… was the day I’d see him again.

“Lana! Your shift’s over!” Jude called

“I…” I swallowed “It’s been a long time, hasn’t it?”

“Too long, yeah,” He gave a bashful beam, rubbing the back of his head “Would you like to come to take a walk with me?”

“I would love to,” I smiled softly “Let me just… change and…”

I pointed to the other room with a foreign hesitation that didn’t exist in me when I was with him. But then again, we hadn’t seen each other in almost three years. He leaned against the counter and I disappeared into the room, changing quickly and throwing the apron and black fabric anywhere before running a brush through my now curly hair, from the rain that had poured. I redid my makeup and sighed as I touched the knob.

Biting my lip and taking a deep breath, I turned it and came out, only to find Liam with his phone out, checking it. He had a BlackBerry, from what I could see a Curve one. I also had a curve, but I was going to get the Torch. Maybe he’d give me his number and we’d…?

No. This wasn’t like before. Liam would talk with me, we’d catch up, he’d move on, and I’d stay in my apartment watching old videos and reblogging Logan Lerman pictures on my tumblr.

“Let’s go?” I offered.

“Yes,” He nodded, opening the door.

It wasn’t raining anymore, but I pulled my coat closer to my body as the cold air hit me. Liam did the same and he turned to me, offering his arm. I hesitantly pulled my hands from my pocket and took upon his offer, letting myself smile as we walked through the deserted streets.

“You look good,” Liam commented, making me blush, something that I could gladly blame on the freezing weather.

“You too,” I shyly answered “Its been a long, long time, Liam”

“It has,” he sighed “A lot has happened since I came back and… you moved, and all”

“I know French now,” I said, biting my lip to fight off the urge to ask him if he remembered, but that wasn't necessary.

“But you hate French!” he chuckled “You said you always wanted to learn Italian and Spanish, but not French, and it was all my fault, cause I knew a bit and I was always trying to get you to like it…”

He trailed off and took a deep breath, looking away from me. I stopped my feet and he turned to me, his eyes scanning mine.

“Why are you here, Liam?” I asked tiredly.

I didn’t want this. Sure, I had missed him and all, and I was alone in London, but it didn’t mind that he could just… pop back into my life because he wanted to. Or take a role on it, because if I was honest my heart was having a spasm on my chest and my stomach felt like butterflies were having a fit inside it.

“I am here because yesterday I saw you,” he took my cold hand in his warm, big one “Yesterday I was passing the café, and I looked, and there you were and…” he winced and darted his eyes to his feet before looking inside mine again “and I realized just how much I missed you.”

“I missed you too, Liam,” I stroked his cheek, and he sighed “But you have to realize that we’re not kids anymore, sweetheart. I’ve got a job, and I go to University, and you’re a famous popstar and all. We just…” I shook my head “It won’t be the same”

“I don’t want it to be the same, that’s the thing!” He looked to both sides before doing the same; glancing inside my orbs “I just want you”

How could he still be so sweet, even after two years? Why was he here anyway? Wasn’t he living on the other side of London, as Ruth had told me? Yes, yes, Ruth and I were still talking, having contact, while Liam lost everything from me. I guessed fame had sneaked its way into his heart, but after he had spoken…

“I don’t want to lose you again,” he spoke “Not after I’ve found you”

“If you had wanted to see me, why now?” I cleared my throat after my voice broke “Why after two years?”

“Because now is when I have the guts,” Liam nodded firmly “Lana, please, give me another chance”

“We’ll see,” I ripped my hands off his “Let’s just catch up. How’s life?”

He looked at me with hurt eyes, but followed me anyway, his right shoulder brushing against my left one as we walked slowly and tantalizingly careful with our feet. I was very clumsy, and Liam knew it.

“Life’s good,” he nodded “Its crazy to think I’m famous now”

“Don’t flatter yourself,” I smirked “You’re still a Payne. You’re not famous to me”

“That’s because you only like a few celebrities”

“Remember who?”

“Especially Robert Downy Jr,” He smirked “He’s going to do an Avengers movie”

“Well, he is Iron Man,” I rolled my eyes “Of course he’s doing the Avengers”

“Are you going to see it?” He asked casually

“Yeah, sure” I shrugged

“Would you like to see it with me?”

I sighed, turning to him.

“Liam…” I started, but he cut me off, walking faster

“I’m sorry, I’m being too forward, aren’t I?” his brown eyes followed my movements

“It’s not that, Liam, it’s just…” I shook my head “Are you asking me as a friend or as in a date?”

“As a friend, of course” he frowned

“I don’t know…” I bit my lip

“Would you… rather be on a date?” Liam asked hesitatingly

“No, of course not!” I burst, and I saw his relieved expression “You really didn’t love me, didn’t you?”

“No,” he shook his head “Everyone was just begging me to ask you out, but I could never do it because I never saw you like that.”

I felt his fingers interlock with mine, and I stopped on my tracks, Liam standing closely to me.

“You’re my sister, Lana” he kissed my forehead slowly and sweetly “Please, think about my offer”

I nodded

“Goodnight, Liam” I bid

“Goodnight, Lana” He nodded, walking away.

I had a feeling that I’d be seeing Liam more than I should.
