Dark Side

Dazed

What hurts the most.

Was being so close.

And havin’ so much to say.

And watchin’ you walk away.

-Rascal Flatts

Harry’s POV

I woke to the sound of someone screaming my name. My sight was still groggy and my mind dazed from my deep sleep.

“Harry! Please! Wake up!”

I heard it yell again. Suddenly, I got up and stretched. When I turned around, my heart sunk and I felt like I was going to throw up. Veronica was lying on the floor, clutching her stomach.

Without giving it a second thought, I rushed to her side. “Baby, are you okay?” I asked frantically, placing my hand on her forehead and wiping the hair out of her face.

Tears were streaming down her cheeks in floods. “No. We need to go to the hospital. Now. I fell on my stomach.”

I felt the color drain from my face. My heart stopped beating. I looked up to notice my shoe lying just a few feet away from us. She must’ve tripped on it. How could I have been so reckless?

I quickly helped Veronica up and grabbed my car keys. She was lagging behind so I picked her up, bridal style, and sat her in the passenger seat. All that mattered was getting her to the hospital. I would inform everyone else later.

I drove over eighty and turned on my emergency lights to alert everyone around me that we were in dire need of getting to our destination.

“Ow!” Veronica screamed. She leaned forward, clutching her stomach, wincing in pain. “It hurts.”

I reached for her hand and took it in mine. She squeezed lightly. “I know baby. I know. We’re almost there.”

Once we pulled into the hospital parking lot, I parked in the emergency section and ran inside as quickly as possible, leaving Veronica behind.

“Help,” I said breathlessly as I entered. “My girlfriend. She fell.”

“Hold on sir,” the woman behind the counter said. She was babbling on the phone to someone, smiling and laughing. How was she so calm? My babies were possibly dying and she was having a good time.

“Please,” I begged. “You have to help. She’s pregnant.”

She stopped talking and turned to me. Her eyes grew wider and her jaw dropped. The phone was sat aside and the emergency button pressed. She rushed around and grabbed a wheelchair.

“Take me to her.”

I did so and helped Veronica in the wheel chair. She was pale and her lips were blue. I could only imagine what the babies looked like.

Veronica’s POV

The world was spinning around me. I heard Harry’s voice a couple of times, telling me that he loved me and that everything was going to be okay. I wish that would be true.

I was lifted onto a bed and people were swarming around me. My vision was blurring. My head was swimming. And my stomach felt like it was turning inside out.

A sharp pinch formed on the inside of my elbow and I whimpered. Someone grabbed my hand. I assumed it was Harry.

“I-I,” I muttered, barely coherent.

Harry squeezed my hand tighter. “What is it baby?”

My eyes drooped, threatening to close. “I want my dad.”

“Don’t worry. He’s on his way,” a man told me. It wasn’t Harry.

I wasn’t aware that Harry had called my dad and told him what had happened. But that didn’t seem to matter right now. My world felt like it was collapsing all around me, the walls crashing in.

It didn’t take long for the darkness to overcome me.

I was in and out. I remembered hearing the sound of Dr. O’Malley’s voice.

“We need to get her into an O.R.”

I blacked out again.

There was something around my head and I heard a beep. My eyes fluttered open and I saw a woman standing over me, wearing a mask that covered her nose and mouth. She wore scrubs and goggles too. It was Dr. O’Malley.

“Clamp,” she said. Something was placed into her hand.

I felt a tug in my stomach. The tool called a clamp was sat aside. Dr. O’Malley leaned forward and pulled something up. It was small, pink and wrinkly, but I couldn’t make anything else out.

The darkness came again.

Harry’s POV

Veronica’s dad wouldn’t be here until tomorrow. I worried that she would be upset. I sat in a hospital room with my mum, pacing back and forth. Veronica was in surgery. She had internal bleeding, but the babies had narrowly escaped a harsh death. Thankfully.

I was at fault. This would’ve never happened if I had just put my shoes away.

“Harry, sit down,” my mum said, worried. “You’re going to tire yourself out.”

I did as I was told and tapped my foot against the floor. She grabbed my hand. “I’m sure everything is fine.”

Everything she told me, I didn’t reply to and ignored it. She couldn’t predict the future. No one could.

All I could think about was my princess and how she could die at any minute.

But then someone came into our room. They removed their mask. It was Dr. O’Malley. The look on her face spoke a thousand words.

My heart started to beat a little faster.

“Everything went well,” she said. I let out a sigh of relief, a tear escaping my eye.

“Veronica was bleeding very badly, but I managed to stop it. She’s in recovery right now, getting the rest she needs. She might be a little sore when she wakes up, but other than that, everything should be fine.”

“What about the babies?” My mum asked. I waited for her answer.

Dr. O’Malley paused, taking a breath. “The babies are fine, but they are severely premature. We’ve placed both of them in incubators to protect them from infection. They’ve also been placed on respirators to help them breath since their lungs haven’t fully developed yet.”

Slowly, I got up and walked toward the doctor. I wrapped my arms around her and gave her a hug. The tears were coming faster. “Thank you. So much. You saved my life.”

And by my life, I meant Veronica and our babies.

She huffed a laugh. “You’re welcome. The babies should be able to leave within a few weeks and you two can go home and be a family.”

I smiled at her and shook her hand. With a nod, she left and I joined my mum again. It seemed my life was on the right track again.

Veronica’s POV

I felt empty, like something was missing. My eyes fluttered open slowly and a bright white light blinded me. I fidgeted, but a sharp pain in my stomach startled me.

I whimpered and soon a woman dressed in white rushed to my side. “Are you in pain?” She asked, assessing my body.

I nodded, crinkling my nose.

“On a scale of one to ten, with ten being the worst, how would you rate it?”

I’ve heard nurses ask that question before. “Seven,” I confessed.

The nurse pressed a button beside my hospital bed and hummed quietly. “This should help.”

“Thank you.”

The nurse disappeared, leaving me to ponder my thoughts. How were my babies? Had they survived? For all I knew, they could’ve died inside me.

I sniffled, stifling upcoming sobs. I wanted my dad. I wanted Harry’s mom. I wanted Harry. And most importantly, I wanted to see my babies.

If they were alive.
