Dark Side

Be Careful What You Wish For

Love is a strong emotion.

It’s like a drug you get addicted to and it’s almost impossible to get rid of. But it’s also the reason why we’re all here.

Harry’s POV

The earliest flight that was leaving for America wasn’t until tomorrow. That meant I had to wait twenty-four agonizing hours to see my beautiful Veronica again. Once I had her within my grasp again, things were going to change. She would never leave. I wouldn’t let her.

I paced back and forth in the kitchen, keeping an eye on the clock every so often. It seemed that time had slowed down just to torment me further. I held my head between my hands to keep from having an overload.

Then, I thought something. Maybe Niall can help me. I grabbed the keys to my black Range Rover and flew out the door at a rapid pace. Talking to Niall could help pass time and that’s exactly what I needed.

The ride there was quiet. The sound of my labored breathing was the only thing I heard, along with the roar of the engine. Once at Niall’s house, I staggered up his steps and knocked on the door loudly.

When he answered, I took in his appearance. His hair was styled effortlessly in blonde spikes, making his blue eyes clearly defined. He wore a plain white, loose fitting tank top and dark was jeans. “Hey, Harry,” he greeted me.

I ignored him, barging inside. “She’s gone. She left me.” My voice was frantic and angry.

“Nice to see you too, Harry. Why don’t you come in?” Niall spoke to the empty atmosphere outside. Again, I chose to ignore him.

I watched as he closed the door and turned to face me. I tapped my foot nervously. “She went back to America with her dad.”

Niall ran his hand through his hair, tousling it even more, sighing. “Maybe it’s for the best.”

My foot stopped and I looked at him, narrowing my eyes. What was he saying? I flexed my hands, stretching my fingers. “For the best?” I asked so lowly it was almost a whisper. “She left me, Niall. Do you not understand that I love her so much it hurts? I feel as though my insides are ripping apart when I’m not with her!” My voice rose with each word I spoke. “My heart aches for her presence. And not only did she leave me, but she think that I could possibly find someone else to replace her.”

Niall stood there. He was rendered speechless. I felt satisfied. “Harry,” he breathed, “I think you’re becoming a little too obsessed. Maybe you should back off a bit.”

My eyes narrowed even further, eyebrows drawing inward. What was he implying? How could he even think that? “How dare you say that!” I shouted, charging at him with clenched fists. He cowered so I went for the wall instead. With all of my anger and frustration packed into one, I punched the wall with brutal force. There was now a hole where my fist was.

I pulled it out slowly, breathing heavy. My cheeks were hot and my knuckles were seeping with blood. “I’m going to get Veronica back,” I spoke deeply to Niall, not bothering to see the expression on his face. “Don’t wait up.”

I slammed the door behind me, clambering back down the steps. Once inside my car, I peeled away and decided to devise a plan to get the love of my life back.

Veronica’s POV

We arrived back home around the middle of the day. Dad was chatting away on his phone while I plopped down on the couch. I didn’t need to unpack due to the fact that all of my old clothes were still here. The house was silent except for Dad, so I closed my eyes to rest. That’s when I realized that I had no way of contacting Harry.

That’s what you wanted though, Veronica.

My subconscious mind was right. It was what I wanted. I didn’t want us to suffer through the agonizing reality of never having to see each other again. And who knows, maybe Harry would find someone else. Maybe he would start and a family with her.

“Veronica, honey,” Dad interrupted my thoughts. My eyes shot open. “The hospital called. I have to go in, so I called Ava and Laney to come keep an eye on you while I’m away.”

The thought of seeing my friends made my heart beat faster. How would they react to seeing me in this state? Would they reject my pregnancy or embrace it?

“Okay,” I said.

We hugged before he left. While I waited on Ava and Laney to get here, I went to inspect my room that I hadn’t seen in almost a year. It still looked the same. Pale blue walls and beige carpet adorned its confines. There were posters of my favorite bands hanging on the wall, along with a picture of my mom and me when I was little. She had her arm wrapped around my tiny body while I hugged her waist, smiling at the camera to show off my newly grown teeth.

My clothed were untouched, hanging in the proper places, just the way I liked them. Then, I saw my phone. I had left it here on the night of the party because my dress didn’t have any pockets. Slowly, I picked it up and unlocked it. I had at least thirty text messages from Ava and Laney. But one in particular caught my eye. It was an unknown number so I took the time to read it.

Hey, Veronica. We all miss you at school, even me. I’ve been struggling with history since you’ve not been here to help me. I know this seems weird sending a text to a missing person, but I needed to get my feelings out. I like you Veronica, a lot. I know I never said it or showed it, but I do. If, or should I say when, you come back maybe we can go out or something? You know, only if you want.
-xxx Jett

My jaw dropped after seeing who the mysterious text was from. Under the circumstances now, he would probably change his mind. After all, Jett Grayson was the star of the basketball team and he didn’t want to date a girl who was pregnant. Especially since they weren’t even his kids. Was this all a joke? Did Jett send this on a dare? It all seemed to good to be true. But I didn’t like Jett anymore. I loved Harry.

You left him, remember?

The sound of the front door opening startled me and I dropped my phone. Instead of picking it up, I went to see who was coming inside my house. I smiled when I saw my two best friends.

“Ronnie!” They both yelled, enveloping me in a perfume-smothered hug. “We missed you so much!”

They both pulled away, allowing me to look at the each of them. Laney’s red hair was still bright and long. Ava’s brown, wavy hair looked the same too. They hadn’t changed one bit since I last saw them. Their eyes also wandered up my body.

“I adore your new haircut,” Ava beamed, rubbing it between your fingers.

Harry gave you that haircut. And you cried during the whole process, but ended up loving it.

“And look at your baby bump!” Laney squealed. “It’s so cute!”

“Here,” I said, grabbing one of their hands. “Feel.”

I placed their hands on my bulging stomach and closed my eyes. I willed for one of the babies to kick. It took a second, but they finally did, earning a gasp from both Ava and Laney.

“Oh my God!” They both shouted. “I hope they look like you,” Laney intoned.

They’ll probably end up looking like Harry.

Everything my friends said made me think of Harry. He just wouldn’t leave my mind. He was engrained deep inside the contours of my brain.

“Who’s the father?” Ava questioned. “What does he look like? Is he hot?”

He’s the best thing that ever happened to me. I thought, but didn’t speak it aloud.

“I don’t really want to talk about it,” I confessed, fiddling with the hem of my t-shirt. It was Harry’s shirt.

“Of course,” Ava comforted me. “We don’t want to push you. But maybe you can tell us all about him in time?”

I nodded.

“So,” Laney started, “what do you girls want to do?”

“Pause that thought,” I said, halting our upcoming conversation. Quickly, I retrieved my phone and opened the message from Jett.

“Is this true?” I questioned my friends. They eyed it warily, but then their expressions grew serious.

“He was heartbroken when you disappeared,” Laney spoke, rereading the message.

“Basketball season didn’t end well,” Ava said. “Oh! And every time something funny was said or something interesting would happen, he would always mention you. The other day, Tanner told some idiotic joke and Jett said, ‘Veronica would’ve laughed at that.’”

I slid my phone in the pocket of my pants. Could Jett possibly still have a crush on me? How was that even possible? My mind was so overcome with the possibilities that I started to cry.

“Oh no, Ronnie,” Ava pulled me in for a soft hug. I felt Laney’s hand squeeze my shoulder gently. “Please don’t cry.”

“We can call Jett if you want. See what he’s up to?” Laney offered.

No matter what they could say, it still wouldn’t cheer me up. I wasn’t crying because of Jett, I was crying because I missed Harry. I wished that I could rewind and stay with him. Maybe I would’ve been happier. I guess I’ll never know now.

Be careful what you wish for… Because you just might get it…
