Understanding
Evelyn's POV:
Luke and I sat by the flickering fire, and the shadows danced on Luke's face, highlighting his cheekbones.
He was quiet as he tapped his fingers against the fabric of the sofa. I stared at the brick fireplace absentmindedly, just enjoying the moment with my...brother.
"Eve," he said, and his blue eyes glinted in the darkness. "Do you forgive me?"
"For what?" I asked tiredly, although I already knew what he would say. I hugged my knees to my chest tightly, shivering in the warmth of the fire.
Luke glanced out the window, staring at the constellations decorating the sky. "For everything," he replied after a moment of pause. "For leaving. For kidnapping. For never telling you until now."
"It's fine," I said, even though I knew it wasn't. "Look. Let's just put the past behind us--"
"--and solve the mysteries ahead of us," Luke finished.
I stared at him in amazement. How did he remember? Niall and I made up that phrase, and I thought I saw Luke listening in the distance.
"Niall," I suddenly said, standing up quickly. "I have to get back."
Luke tensed up when he heard Niall's name. "Do you have to go?" he asked me, standing up, too. "We just reunited."
"He is probably worrying right now."
Luke sighed and nodded, leading me to his worn car. As he drove, I noticed that his skin across his knuckles were white and strained, like he was gripping the steering wheel very tightly.
"You can stay with me," I offered, risking a glance at his stone hard face.
His eyes were glaring at the empty space ahead, his veins poking out of his neck. "With Niall?" I thought he muttered. "No."
"What?" I was shocked. Did he not like Niall?
"Nothing. You wouldn't understand anyway."
I decided not to answer, so he could calm down a little. "Well?"
Luke shook his his head and parked on the driveway. "Is this it?"
"How do you know where I live?" I wondered out loud. I exited the car. "You sure you don't want--" I turned back to him, but he was already gone.
