The Start of Something Beautiful

Isn't She Lovely?

He tossed in the small recliner, trying to get comfortable but failing. The mid-morning sun peaking through the hospital blinds, rays falling on his eyes waking him from his slumber. Deciding that he wasn’t going to get anymore sleep, he sat up, stretching his cramped limbs before shaking out his hair and pushing it away from his forehead.
His green eyes scanned the room, landing on his sleeping wife, thankful she’d been able to sleep longer than a few hours. A few loose strands of hair falling into her open mouth making him chuckle quietly to himself. Her incredible strength was proven in the twenty-two hours of labor she endured just the day before, it all taking a toll on her body now. Exhaustion had claimed her only six hours ago, little Darcy exhausted as well.
Harry stood, walking over to the bassinet where Darcy slept like a rock, swaddled securely in a pink blanket. Her dark, almost jet black hair that she’d inherited from her mother, was hidden by a white beanie with a pink bow on it. Eyelashes fanned out on her slightly pink cheeks as she slept soundly.
He looked down at the little miracle that he and his wife had created out of love. For so long, they had waited for a child, and now they had the perfect little girl to call their own.
Harry’s ears were tuned to hear Darcy stir in the blanket, pink lips parting to let out tiny cries. His heart broke at the sound, tears stinging his eyes. His hands shuffled to unwrap her from the blanket leaving her in just a pink onesie, bringing her to his chest as her cries began to increase. Harry rubbed her back soothingly, pressing gentle kisses to her head and cheek, her cries slowly turning into small gurgles. Harry breathed a sigh of relief, kissing her head once more. He held out a finger to the tiny girl, her tiny hand gripping onto her father’s tightly, snuggling deeply into his chest.
The room was quiet, except for the gentle hum of the air conditioner below the window. Harry stood completely absorbed in the little girl on his chest, not being able to fathom that he’d created something so perfect. The love he had for her was indescribable. At only a day old, Darcy already had Harry wrapped around her tiny fingers multiple times.
A knock at the door brought Harry from his trance, the nurse stepping in smiling warmly at the two.
“You look like a natural.”
Harry blushed, he was a father now, it still hasn’t sunk in yet. The one thing he knew was that he was going to love being called ‘daddy’ by Darcy.
“You should try skin to skin, it helps you bond with her.”
Harry nodded handing Darcy over to the nurse gently and slowly before unbuttoning the top buttons of his shirt. They made the exchange again, making sure Darcy didn’t wake and pressed her to Harry’s warm chest. Her soft cheek rested on one of the swallows tattooed to his skin, little gurgles escaping past her pink lips as she cuddled into her father’s warmth.
Only a few moments later did her toothless gums begin to show, little cries coming from the newborn. Harry’s heart clenched at the sound of his baby in distress again, he looked to the nurse for some sort of help.
Instinctively, Taylor woke from her slumber, immediately reaching for her wailing baby. Harry hesitated handing over his precious gift, but would do anything to get her comfortable again.
“Looks like somebody is hungry.” The nurse commented to Taylor. The new mother looked up at the nurse, knowing that it was time to at least try to breast feed. She was nervous, looking to her husband for some kind of encouragement or comfort.
“It’s okay baby, you can do it.” He dropped a kiss to her dark hair beckoning her to try.
The nurse talked her through the process before she helped Taylor lower the shoulder of the hospital gown.
What if she didn’t latch on? What if she hadn’t produced any milk? Thoughts were swirling through the new mother’s mind as she prepared to feed Darcy.
“When she latches on, you will feel some discomfort, it takes some getting used to.”
Taylor lowered Darcy down to her breast, bringing her close hoping that she would latch on.
“Come on baby girl, I know you’re hungry.” Harry encouraged stroking the still crying newborn’s cheek. “Come on baby, you need to eat. Shh.”
Darcy’s cries decreased as her father’s deep, slow voice sang out soothingly. “Isn’t she lovely? Isn’t she wonderful? Isn’t she precious? Less than one minute old. I never thought, through love we’d be making one as lovely as she. But isn’t she lovely made from love?”
Taylor smiled a bit before sucking in a sharp breath as Darcy latched onto her nipple, beginning to suckle. “That’s it baby girl.”
“Isn’t she precious, truly the angel’s best. Oh I’m so happy, we have been heaven blessed. I can’t believe what God has done, through us he’s given life to one. So very lovely, made from love.”
The nurse had snuck out of the room unnoticed leaving the young family to themselves. Darcy kept eating away as Harry stroked her pink cheek continually, while pressing comforting kisses to her uncomfortable mother’s head.
Taylor looked up at her loving husband, so thankful that he was there for her. She knew that he was going to be such an amazing father to Darcy, he loved her with every fiber of his being. It showed in the way he looked at the little girl, green eyes so full of love and adoration.
“I love you so much.”
“I love you more.” His head dipped to meet his wife’s lips in a tender kiss.
Harry pulled away, admiring his queen with his new princess. He had never been so in love with two people before now. His girls were his everything, he would do anything for them an protect them at all costs. Harry’s life was as close to perfect as it could get. He was in bliss.
