The Start of Something Beautiful

First Night

Harry stood in the nursery, looking down at his precious gift that lay sleeping in her crib, listening to the gentle sounds she made in her slumber. The soft tune of an old lullaby played gently in the background providing a soothing atmosphere for Darcy. He had been in the same position for almost an hour, just taking in her tiny features, noticing how much she favored both he and her mother.
It had been surprisingly easy to get her to sleep that night, after she was fed, Taylor had rocked her right to sleep without hassle from the newborn. During all of this, Harry sat with his wife, comforted her as she nursed and watched admiringly as she put Darcy to bed. Taylor knew exactly what to do, no matter how much she doubted herself, she was born to be a mother.
Taylor leaned on the doorway to the nursery watching her husband with adoration. Her limbs, muscles, and entire being were exhausted but still she couldn’t tear herself away from the picturesque moment. Seeing her husband so absorbed in their precious baby girl was always something she’s dreamed about, always something she knew was going to be one of the best sights to see. When she met Harry, she could see her whole life with him, right down to this sweet moment. She was blessed beyond imagination and she couldn’t be more appreciative of her little family.
The slightest stir in Darcy had Harry on his toes, ready to scoop her up the minute she made the tiniest sound of discomfort. She settled back into her heavy slumber, snuggling into her pink blanket. Harry smiled seeing her little hand grip the foot of the large teddy bear he had gotten for her when he found out Taylor was pregnant.
Taylor walked up behind her husband, wrapping her arms around his torso, resting her head on his back. Harry intertwined their hands, bringing one of her’s up to press a kiss to her knuckles.
"I can’t believe she’s here." He whispered, squeezing his wife’s hand in his. "We’re parents now, it’s all happening, this is real."
"I know."
Harry turned in Taylor’s arms, cupping her face and pressing a kiss to her lips.
"Thank you."
Her eyebrows crinkled. “For what?”
"For giving me the most precious and perfect gift in the world."
*
The baby monitor by Taylor’s head started to pick up the faint sounds of Darcy’s cries, making Taylor immediately jolt from bed, ignoring the soreness between her legs to trudge into the nursery where her baby girl lay wailing. Her arms scooped up the newborn from the crib and brought her close to her chest, rubbing her soft hair as she slightly bounced around the room.
"Shh, baby, what’s wrong?"
To no avail, Darcy’s cries only became louder, making Taylor’s heart break. The young mother pressed her lips to the tiny girl’s wet cheek, hoping to calm her in the slightest.
"Baby girl." She pleaded, kissing her temple softly.
Taylor sat in the cushioned arm chair, grabbing the nursing pillow to rest Darcy on and lowered the strap to her tank too and nursing bra. She brought Darcy closer, hoping she’d latch on and settle, but of course, she refused to nurse. Taylor tried a few more times before standing up and walking to the changing table and laying Darcy down unbuttoning the bottom of her purple onesie.
After Darcy had been changed, she continued letting out heartbreaking cries. Taylor felt her own tears start to well in her eyes, threatening to spill. Her heart was breaking more and more, she didn’t know anything else to do.
“Babe?”
Taylor looked at her tired husband in the doorway, rubbing his eyes. She let out a whimper and Darcy continued to wail.
“Harry, I’ve tried everything! She won’t stop crying, I’m such a terrible mother.”
He walked to his wife, gingerly taking the crying little girl from her arms and cradling her in his. Her now red face pressed to his bare chest, calming her slightly. Harry swayed gently, singing a soft tune that Taylor knew so well.
“It’s a little bit funny, this feeling inside. I’m not one of those who can easily hide. I don’t have much money, but boy if I did, I’d buy a big house where we both could live.”
Taylor watched in adoration as Darcy’s cries decreased as her father sang out soothingly.
“And you can tell everybody this is your song. It may be quite simple, but now that it’s done, I hope you don’t mind that I put down in words how wonderful life is now that you’re in the world.”
Harry dropped a kiss to her soft hair, smiling down at his little girl before he continued to sing.
“If I was a sculptor, but then again you know, or a guy who makes potions in a traveling show. I know it’s not much but it’s the best I can do. My gift is my song and this one’s for you.”
Tears were brought to Taylor’s eyes as she watched the sweet moment between the two loves of her life.
“And you can tell everybody that this is your song, it may be quite simple but now that it’s done, I hope you don’t mind that I put down in words how wonderful life is now that you’re in the world.”
Darcy’s little eyes were fluttered closed, drifting off into a deep sleep on her father’s warm chest. He kissed her head once more before placing her gently in her crib making sure she didn’t stir. He stood looking down at her for a few more moments, just absorbing her all over again, making sure he didn’t miss a thing already.
Harry returned to Taylor, taking her hand in his and leading her back to their shared bedroom. As they climbed into bed, Taylor noticed Harry’s sad expression, scooting closer to him and kissing his shoulder.
“Babe, what’s wrong?”
“I didn’t hear her.” His voice was tight, obviously holding back tears as he talked. He couldn’t believe he didn’t hear her cries, he didn’t even feel his wife get out of bed, he felt terrible.
“Baby, it’s okay, you were tired.”
“So were you, probably more, but you still heard her. If I can’t hear my own baby crying, what kind of father does that make me?”
Taylor wiped her thumbs under his eyes before wrapping him in her arms and cuddling him close to her. “A normal, new father. Please don’t beat yourself up about this baby, please.” Her hands continuously ran through his curls, knowing it comforted him when she did.
“But-”
“No buts, you are a wonderful father Harry, just look how Darcy responds to you. If it wasn’t for you, I don’t think I would be able to get her back to sleep. She loves you so much and I know you love her, and I love you both more than anything in this world. We’re new at this, it’ll take some getting used to, but we’re in this together.”

Notes

This one is my favorite so far! I LOVE Ellie Goulding’s version of ‘Your Song’ by Elton John, and that’s the one that I used when Harry sings. I also thought it would be perfect for him to sing in the situation.
If you have any ideas or requests, please feel free to tell me! I love hearing what you guys want from the series!
Thank you for all the kind words, they mean the world to me! I love updating for you guys and I definitely love writing these, I don’t plan on stopping anytime soon!
Stay tuned for part eleven: Meet & Greet
