Chapter One

Beep, Beep, Beep…

The alarm clock sounded at exactly 6:30am, Monday morning, July 8 2013.

Beep, Beep, Beep…

Its continuous noise broke through the early morning silence, making me want to throw it out of the window from my apartment which was located on the fifth floor of my building. I rolled over, my eyes squinting at the device located on my bedside table. I slammed my hand down onto the clock to stop the horrible beeping noise it made so damn well. Why? I thought to myself as I pulled off the covers slowly from my incredibly warm and comfy bed and hauled myself into the small bathroom next to my room.

An hour later and I found myself walking briskly along a foot-path in the middle of London with two cups of hot coffee, balancing in one hand and my mobile phone in the other. I pushed my chocolate coloured, mid-length hair quickly behind my ear as I stepped foot into my office building. “Good morning Grace!” The receptionist called out as I walked past her.

“Morning.” I replied back. After placing my bag and coat in my office I quickly made my way over to James’s office. James is one of my good friends from work; he actually has the same position as me in the company as we began at the same time a few years ago. “Good morning,” I said cheerfully as I walked to his side. “I brought you your coffee, just the way you like it.” I smiled and place it in front of him on the desk.

“Thanks Grace, you’re the best.” He replied. “I just wanted to know if you were coming to my party this Friday night.”

“Yeah, I’ll definitely be coming. I’ll probably bring Brooke as well so she’s not sitting at home eating ice-cream all night.” Brooke was my best friend and roommate who had recently broken up with her long-term boyfriend, Ryan.

“Sounds great,” James smiled. “I’ll see you then.”

-

“Come on, Brooke! Hurry up! We don’t want to be too late!” I called out from the living room. I was sitting on the couch flicking through a magazine while waiting for Brooke to finish getting ready so we could go to James’s party.

“Nearly done, I swear!” She yelled out from the bathroom. “There, I’m finished. You can calm down now.” She rolled her eyes as she strutted out of the bathroom before throwing me a grin. “Now let’s go party!” She cried and walked out of our apartment, her heels clicking against the floor. I quickly grabbed my bag and keys, locked our apartment then ran to catch up with Brooke who was already on her way to James’s house. “You’re so slow.” She moaned when I finally caught up with her.

Arriving at the party, what I thought was going to be a small get-together with friends to help celebrate his birthday, turned out to be a huge house party with what seems to be at least 100 people. Brooke and I could hear the loud dance music from up the road. “Isn't this going to be fun?” I sighed. I’m not usually the best person in these situations.

“Loosen up G! Have fun! Remember how we used to party?” Brooke laughed.

“No? I hardly remember any of those nights” I replied, confused.

“Exactly. You’re not supposed to!” She grinned before grabbing my hand and pulling me roughly towards the entrance of James’s house. As soon as we stepped foot, Brooke mumbled that she was going to find drinks and left me standing in the doorway looking lost as I searched for someone I knew.

“Grace! You’re here!” James cried as he crushed me into a drunken hug.

“I told you I would come.” I smiled.

“C’mon, let’s get you a drink!” He shouted as I followed him to his kitchen. “Are you having fun?” He asked.

“I just got here a few minutes ago, but so far, I am.” I smiled.

“James, there you are! I’ve been looking for you everywhere.” Some tall, gorgeous blonde squealed as she came up to us. This must be Lucy, James’s girlfriend.

“Hi, I’m Grace.” I told her, waving one hand. “I work with James.”

“Lucy.” She snickered. I could see her eyes travelling up and down my body with a look of disgust showing clear across her face. She turned back to James. “C’mon baby, Gabby and Josh just arrived.” She pulled James’s arm, causing him to send me an apologetic look as he followed her towards the front door.

“Don’t worry, everyone hates her as well.” A voice said from behind me. I turned around to find a tall, curly-haired brunette guy standing behind me. His white shirt revealed his tattoos (and muscles) spectacularly while his dark jeans were sitting upon his hips in a sexy way.

“Is she always that rude?” I asked.

“I’ve never actually heard her be nice to someone before.” He chuckled. “I’m Harry by the way.” He stuck out his hand and I grabbed it, shaking it while replying with, “I’m Grace.”

“Grace!” Brooke’s voice rang in my ear. “Come be my wing-woman, please?” I turned to face her. “Thank you!” She cried before I had a chance to respond.

"It was nice meeting you.” I told Harry. He nodded in response before I was dragged away by my best friend.
