Troubled

"I absolutely hated heights."

I looked down at the people below us as the Ferris wheel got higher and higher. I absolutely hated heights, my heart staring to race as the people below us looked more like ants more than people.

“Oh god.” I breathed.

“Delilah, there’s nothing to be afraid of, nothing’s going to happen up here.”

I looked over to Rachel, my best friend, smiling at me sympathetically. Rachel along with Shayla and Lilly, my good friends from school had planned for the four of us to have a day at the amusement park, going on rides that made your stomach flip going upside down and in circles over and over again. Everything is fine until you bring heights into the picture.

“You can see everything from up here!” Lilly leaned over to look out at the view, her face bright with excitement.

“Including the ground where we could fall to our death. I do not like this!”

Rachel put a supportive arm around my shoulders, a sweet smile on her face. She was the only person who could calm be down. She wasn’t only my best friend; she was a part of me. After my grandparents died when I was 15, she stayed with me every day making sure I was okay, and made me smile when I was sad. Two years later and nothing’s changed.

“We’ll be going back down soon anyway, just enjoy the view while you can, seriously Dell it’s beautiful. Just breath.”

I took a breath and looked over the edge trying to keep calm, but the minute I looked over the carriage tipped slightly under our weight. I shrieked stumbling back to my seat, pulling my knees up to my chest, my heart pounding in my chest. Why did I have to hate heights so much?

I started to calm down as we started coming back down to flat ground, the girls all sat around talking amongst themselves while I sat and listened. I didn’t say much around crowds, I was the type of person who sat around listening and laughing to other people. I never had anything interesting to say, so why say anything?

“We better go before we miss our buss, if I’m late, my mum will kill me.”

Shayla jumps off the little carriage first, skipping over to a candyfloss stall. With a sweet smile, her hands behind her back she asked for four candyfloss cones.

“So three for the ladies and one for the major sweet tooth over there?”

The boy inside the stall poked his head out with a smirk.

“Watch it Mike, I know where you keep your stash of chocolates.”

He chuckled, putting his hands up in defence.

“Sorry sis. But you know that no one touches my chocolates.”

My brother had been working in the candyfloss stall since he got the boot from his old job in a clothes store. He hated it there anyway. The good thing about his working here was getting away with free candyfloss. I didn’t know how his boss hadn’t found out yet. He needed a job to pay for the college he was planning on going to next year, but because he had waited until he was 19 to get another job, not many people wanted him. I respected my brother, the two of us were good friends, we hardly ever fought like most brothers and sisters do. He had helped me through my parents’ divorce and has always been beside me if I needed someone to lean on. He was like my rock; he kept me grounded.

“Tell mum I’ll be home around 9:00 tonight.”

I nodded as he handed the four of us our candyfloss cones and headed off towards the bus stop.

“Do you think your brothers ever going to get caughtgiving us free stuff all the time?”
I shrugged at Rachel as I pulled off a part of candyfloss shoving it into my mouth.

“Hope not, I’m enjoying it while it lasts.”

We all laughed as we headed into a group of people walking the opposite way. I try to dodge people as they passed, but suddenly crashed into someones shoulder.

“Watch it.”

A dark, deep voice spoke to me as I looked back at a pair of emerald green eyes staring back at me. His brown hair curly hair fell over part of his face, sticking up around his ears. I noticed four other boys stop to look at me behind him, but those green eyes stared at me darkly making me shiver.

“S-Sorry.”

I mumbled quietly before turning away from them hurrying off with the girls beside me.

“I thought he was about to pounce for a second. He looked ready to attack you! No wonder everyone thinks their scary.”

I frown to myself before speaking up.
“Who are they?” I asked quietly.

“Harry Styles’ gang? They go to our school! Their dangerous and rude if you ask me. I would stay away from them if I were you.”

I remember seeing the curly haired one at school once with the other four boys with him. They never spoke to anyone outside their little ‘gang’. The five of them kept to themselves. I did see very pretty, beautiful girls winking over to them now and then which made me realize how desperate for sex they must be. Stupid, horny teenage boys, their all the same.
